Charade: A Speakeasy Experience Like No Other

~Step into a world of hidden delights at Charade, a speakeasy nestled in the heart of Bankers Hill San Diego inside The Balboa Bar and Grill. This intimate venue embodies artistic passion and community spirit, offering a unique blend of handcrafted cocktails, vibrant performances that may happen or may not happen randomly if the curtain opens, and an atmosphere that transports you to other eras and different dimensions.

Every time you visit Charade it will be different than the last time. Performances may or may not happen, have an open mind but do not expect anything if randomly booking. Mature content may happen as we do have burlesque on the occasion.

Charade offers mostly drinks, alcoholic and mocktails as well as small bites to eat, cheese plates and bespoke popcorns. If you’d like a true meal please dine at The Balboa Bar and Grill before or after you walk into Charade, no Balboa (or any outside) food or drink allowed in Charade.

We went to see The Pact play with Thonie Lee and they all were fantastic. Musicians were awesome as was singer, Thonie Lee, and back up singer. Drinks and food were delicious -a bar burger and rum cocktail. I'd go again 💯

I very much do not want to leave this review, but I think every place deserves some honest feedback from time to time to work on areas of improvement. While they were hospitable and greeted us at the door of the Balboa and we had great table service and the drinks tasted fine, there were a few key things that were amiss for Charade. It’s not very clear online via IG when their main performances are supposed to start, so that would help transform the vibe a little bit. The show was supposed to start at 7, and unfortunately the main act appeared to be an hour late, according to what we were told. The MC’s schtick was mostly lewd jokes about sex coming from an older gentleman. This may be ok for some audiences, but it was a miss with my female crew. It had the MC stalling and sweating. The first performance was ok, the singer had a good voice, albeit the whole act a bit strange. The main performance finally came on, sang three songs, and went to break. By then, we decided to leave. I did not eat the food, but my friends said the dolmas were dry. While everything they served were finger foods served with skewers, they did need to provide some small plates and all they had were cocktail napkins. They also had nothing to cut up the brie pieces with. I hope they are able to smooth over some of these hiccups because overall the concept is cool, and they do seem to bring in quite a variety of unique artists.

Cool venue but could have been better. Called a few times the week before the show to ask some questions & left voicemails requesting a callback but didn't receive any. Minimal food options (small cheese board, snacks), can't order food from Balboa Bar & Grill next door. Limited bar menu (6 sig cocktails, 4 wine, 2 beer choices (unnamed) of average quality, no prices listed, 2 drink minimum). Was told we'd have to leave our table after 2 hours to make room for other reservations (no mention of that on the website). We relocated to the bar which had 4 barstools. On the bright side, the band was really good with other musicians stepping in to jam throughout the night. Be prepared to tip the band (cash, Venmo) as there was no cover charge.

The place is quite charming and unique, though it is quite small and people are packed in like sardines. However, a few disappointments. I read a FAQ about whether or not Charade serves food - the answer was that the Balboa Bar & Grill serves great burgers. So, with that answer and the knowledge that Charade is physically connected, one would assume you could take your burgers into the speakeasy. Not so. So, if you want to eat before a show, plan accordingly to eat before entering the speakeasy. Based on comments heard, you get about 90 minutes to stay and then have to leave. Their show format is based on short bits (charades) that repeat during the night. So, you may or may not see all of it in 90 min, but once that's understood, it's ok. We had table reservations at 8 pm, then found out that we have to eat at the bar & grill before going in. When the doors to the speakeasy opened, I went to explain our predicament. I stood at the entrance for over 5 min with nobody talking to me - no dedicated hostess and no one making that a priority (greeting guests), finally I explained my predicament and the answer "oh don't worry, many people are leaving soon, we'll get you a table". So, things worked out, the cocktails were quite good but there's no prices on their "menu". Don't expect professionalism and you'll have a good time.

Love this place. The burger sans chicken at Balboa are superb. Charade is fun and last night it was wild with fun people on the audience. The performers were great as well. A lot of fun. A couple of things - the banquette on the left side as you enter now dips in the seat so it is not really comfortable. Also some lights on the wall are out. Could mean they are not paying close attention to the details Love the place.

Staff was excellent, but the drinks were not. We had reservations at 6, but it did not open until 6:15.
