Our Story
The goal – to guarantee a wonderful meal with authentic cuisine and fabulous margaritas, serve over 50 artisanal and ancestral mezcals, and over 100 different types of tequila brands in a vibrant unique atmosphere that boasts excellent service. Ruta Oaxaca Mexican Cuisine opened in Astoria in 2021 with such a wonderful and successful home run that a second location opened in Patchogue in March 2022.

Ruta Oaxaca means “Road to Oaxaca,” a historic state in the southern part of Mexico. Mr. Castillo and his Partners are keenly focused on honoring Oaxacan culinary traditions, whose fame is derived in great part from its many varieties of moles. By legend, these ancient recipes are more than sauces, they are the very focus of the meal. Ruta Oaxaca proudly features four moles, each prepared using the Oaxacan mole recipes that have made the cuisine world famous.

Food could use a bit more seasoning. Sauces do not make up for seasoning. Pulpo was cooked nice. Ambience is great. Beautiful restaurant. Service was also excellent. Got the marg tower and drinks could have been a bit stronger but very unique.

We celebrated a friend's birthday here on Friday, and it was a blast. The atmosphere was bright, lively, and perfect for the occasion. Our server was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. We all tried different entrees: Enchiladas Verdes, Steak Quesadilla, and Pechuga en Mole. Each dish was flavorful and worth coming back for. Plus, a live mariachi band played throughout the restaurant, even serenading our table with a special song. It was a fantastic first impression, and we’ll definitely be back!

We had dinner on a Saturday night around 6:00pm and the place was filled. Our server was pleasant and attentive and the food arrived quickly. The food and drinks were presented beautifully and everything was delicious. Note, they provide a discount for cash, but the check amount assumes a credit card purchase, so you need to ask for the discount (+/- 3%). We did and the server returned with a reduced check amount. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely dine there again.

This is an excellent Mexican restaurant, really hitting on all cylinders - decor, service, food, and drinks! I had the vegetable empanadas. It was flavorful and very filling. Fun place for a birthday celebration.

We went here to celebrate Mother's Day and the experience was incredible. The servers were so amazing, and so attentive . They even gave her two cute little plants as a little mother's day gift. I have been to this restaurant many times and the food is always amazing. So happy we chose this restaurant for our Mother's Day celebration.

The food and atmosphere was great. It takes awhile to get drinks when it’s busy and they are pricey. My second sangria was much better than the first. My husband was disappointed with the portion size. The staff is friendly and always stays on top of things.
