A hip and fun restaurant with chef's counter dining, serving thoughtful American cuisine, with an emphasis on local seasonal products.

Ethel's Fancy is open at 5 PM Tuesday - Saturday.

We have a small dining room with a limited amount of reservable tables. We do keep our Bar seats and a table in the restaurant open for people to walk-ins. Walk-ins are on a first come basis.

Please do not make multiple reservations with the intention of combining reservations to increase party size.

All guests must be present before your party will be seated.

To help provide a seamless experience for all our guests, we have allocated 2-hours for your group of 2 to 4 people.

    Great dining experience with an impeccable attention to detail and dining service. Every dish was delicious and I savored each bite. The FOH is incredibly courteous, with service that I haven’t seen in most restaurants even at the same price point. It’s my second time dining here, and they make everyone feel so special. Will be coming back here again!

    Absolutely amazing in every way. It was our first time there, and we both said this has to be the best restaurant in Palo Alto. We will be back soon!

    Upon walking into this beautiful space, I immediately noticed that it feels like a high-end diner. There is a wonderful bar set-up and a countertop that surrounds the kitchen; it feels at home while also being distinctly... well... fancy. I checked in for my reservation (for 1, I love solo dining while traveling) with Mia at the host stand and she bent over backwards to get me the exact seat I wanted at the bar. Mickey, the manager, quickly greeted me with a glass of sparkling rose and delightful conversation. My experience from this point forward was divine in every way. The service, the food, the drinks. Perfection. I asked for a grapefruit and vodka concoction - and received a beautiful gold-flecked cocktail that felt purposefully made just for me. The octopus - EXCELLENT. The cucumbers - AMAZING. The Oysters - STRANGE! and so good!. I had the Halibut and enjoyed it, the wonderful solo traveler and diner next to me had the pork belly and she said it felt like an elevated, important food experience for her. My hat is so far off my head to this establishment. I cannot wait to recommend it to every person I know in the area. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    Bad experience - the waiter didn’t pay attention to our dietary restrictions. My wife doesn’t eat spicy food, but somehow two dishes were spicy. Also missed birthday surprise

    We have to wait 30min before gets seated even with reservation. Food is ok this round not sure because its the menu or ..

    Each dish sent out by this talented chef combines flavors, textures, sometimes colors to make each facet of dining here feel special. Pork belly cubes are topped with sweet orange segments and thinly sliced radish. Even old favorites like striploin appear re-imagined, lovely in their twin sauces and "sticky" carrots. The menu,which changes with the seasons, features small and large plates. Halibut is a standout for finding the exquisite moment of cooking just enough, not too much or too little, so that the delicate flavor of the fish is enhanced and the texture remains flaky and soft. You will want to come back to see the new dishes on the menu. This popular restaurant is mostly full, but managed efficiently. Water glasses (still and sparkling are complimentary) are watched, and everyone is pleasant and welcoming.

    The rave reviews are well deserved. My impression is Ethel's Fancy is tantamount to having an Allan Wong's/Palm Grill (sadly both AW's HNL restaurants are closed permanently) in the SFBA. Appetizers: The milk bread was divine. Brocolli stuffed with scallops were crunchy and flavorful. Smoked trout on sesame biscuits were yummy. Entrees: Roasted pork belly was the tastiest ever. Halibut with Japanese curry had well balanced and complementary nuanced flavors. Desert: Chocolate tart with cream coffee topping was over the top good. Ambiance: Modern and monimal. Bright lighting with moderate noise level, Saturday night and full tables. We had reservations for outdoor seating but it was chilly with wind gusts so we were kindly seated at the bar instead. Service: Attentive, professional and friendly. On target. Will return again and again. We were seated between multiple times repeat couples. The menu reflects the owner/chef's delicious and successful blending of a Japanese American growing up in Hawaii and culinary school legacies. Plentiful free parking on street and parking lots.

    Living in the Bay Area, if you have a meal at Borgo in NYC, it's worth the flight to NYC. If you live in NYC, it's worth the flight to the Bay Area for Ethel's Fancy. The scallops with the maitake mushrooms in a salsa verde were sublime, the tuna tartare with rice is elevated beyond belief with the smoked ikura, and the katsu swordfish is so perfectly prepared you will never want to eat swordfish any other way. The kinako softserve and corn fancier with the Hokkaido milk custard will make non-dessert people change their diets--truly innovative and wonderful!
