Welcome to Ukiah Japanese Smokehouse, where Japanese Soul Food meets American BBQ by James Beard Nominated Chef Michael Lewis. “Japanese Smokehouse” is defined as merging Japanese ingredients and flavors with American BBQ techniques, and everything in between.

Menu highlights include light and refreshing dishes such as Wagyu Tataki with house kimchee, yuzu kosho and savory soy or Tuna Takaki with fire roasted peppers + ponzu, to bolder flavors such as Smoked Pastrami Short Rib with toasted rye, fire roasted kimchi + yuzu pickles. We are currently open 7 days a week.

Please note, our dining room consists of booths, regular tables and high-tops. We will try our best to accommodate you at your prefer location, but sometimes it is not possible due to party size. Our outdoor tables can be requested but not guaranteed when booking on open table.

    Dinner last night at Ukiah was exactly the experience I had hoped it would be. Our server Xander was incredibly helpful and a lot of fun to talk to. The tuna tataki, karaage chicken, hamachi crispy rice and snapper were all stand outs, but the quality of all the food we ordered (which was a lot!) was very high. I highly recommend Ukiah for a night when you just want to treat yourself (or out of town guests like I did).

    WE have been to Ukiah several times and enjoy the food, service and atmosphere. this one was no different except the menu had some major changes. so we tried many new items and enjoyed them immensely. Our waiter was great as well; cheerful and helpful !

    Get the small dishes on sticks. Each was delicious. Crispy shrimp appetizer- 👍👍👍 Service was also excellent.

    Food was high quality, great location and great service. We had the tasting menu which started very strong but towards the middle it got a little weird. Most of the courses were small - very consistent with a tasting menu which started - then a giant plate of bbq brisket. Now, don’t get me wrong, the quality and taste were great it just didn’t fit with Japanese cuisine. Dessert was also quite large. Overall it was great and we would go back, but not get the tasting menu or would ask more questions.

    We traveled from Indianapolis looking for a unique place to eat and experience Asheville culture. Ukiah is a gem to find! The atmosphere was lively and they accommodated 7 of us with a table we could all visit at easily. We were celebrating 2 birthdays and the server, Jess took great care to make sure we felt celebrated. The food was amazing, unique, delicious. We enjoyed sharing all of the dishes. We loved the concept of ordering 2-3 plates per person and passing them around. We will definitely return when we are in Asheville, and look forward to visiting the Fort Lauderdale location as well!
