Californian
Blending classic East Coast culinary traditions with a modern Californian sensibility, Herb & Sea is Chef Brian Malarkey’s venerable companion restaurant to the much-loved Herb & Wood in Little Italy. Quickly becoming one of the most sought-after tables in town, the concept shines with a menu that focuses on simple, clean, bright flavors. Located steps from Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, the vibrant space is housed in a 1920’s art deco building that has been restored to its original glory.

Daily operations are helmed by Executive Chef Aidan Owens. The menu includes a mix of raw bar staples, fresh seafood, meat dishes, and roasted vegetables. A variety of pizzas and pastas round out the offerings, alongside dessert and a dedicated kids’ menu.

The spirits program is bright and playful, emphasizing citrus and floral notes that utilize the same ingredients found on the menu. The wine list offers a similar sense of whimsy, highlighting labels meant to complemen

Service was good, place was busy so making sure we got GF food was top priority just busy night waited to long in between appetizers and main courses. To all the places that see me not ordering booze lol my CC monthly statements are more than your rent… my reviews are all positive and 100% tru… now I have pics but typically I eat half the food before I snap a pic because I’m not a loser

Cozy and welcoming atmosphere and excellent service. Food was delicious and portion sizes felt generous without being too much - good value. We loved the Focaccia and we also really enjoyed the beet dish and the Branzino.

Food and service was fantastic! Spencer was very attentive to us and provided a wonderful tour of the menu. He was also very kind and patient and is someone we’d request again. The only part of our dining experience that was a bit less enjoyable was our table seating. We were seated in the direct pathway of the front door and we felt the cold breeze from outside *every* time the door was opened. It was so breezy that it wasn’t possible to even light a candle for a birthday dessert. Nonetheless, the overall experience was great. Had it not been a cold day in general, sitting in the same spot we did would not be a dealbreaker. The food and service greatly make up for it and we’re looking forward to our next visit!

Absolutely loved my husband and I’s experience at Herb & Sea. We started with the crudo and roasted carrots. Both were absolutely delicious! He enjoyed the ragu and I went with the seared rock fish. We should have stayed for dessert. Everything was great and we will definitely be back for the strawberry rhubarb donuts. Cheers!

Dined on Sunday for the Prix Fix Seafood Tasting menu. Supposedly a 3 course seriving of fresh local seafood. We were disappointed in the 3 course dinner in that the only course with any kind of significant seafood was the appetizer (Yellow Tail). The main course was pasta with Uni butter. There was no protein provided on the pasta unless you wanted to pay an additional fee for it. The pasta was bland and underwhelming, void of any Uni flavor or other seasoning. The 3rd course was a pastry dessert with no seafood at all. I am not sure how they can call this a "seafood tasting" when you don't serve any seafood? At $55/person (plus a 4% surcharge), this was a very disappointing evening.

We really wanted to like it.. I ordered the Taster Menu at $55 and I got 5 bite sized pieces of yellow tail on about 1/2 cup soy sauce and a plate of cold pasta with a dry, tasteless butter sauce. Dessert was tasty but not appropriate, as it was more of a pastry rather than a dessert. It needed a cafe late to go with it. lol My husband’s fish was tasty but he left hungry. No side dishes to speak of. My daughter had a bowl of gnocchi that was a 1 out of 5 and our friends’ pizza was great, though. The lava cake my daughter and husband shared was amazing. Service was ok, nothing extravagant. Noise level a tad high. Overall disappointing. $300 later and we were still hungry.

All of the dishes were very good. However several were bread based making the $65.00 for the 2 courses somewhat low on value. Everything was well prepared. I had shrimp toast which was good but again on a very thick piece of toasted bread. I also had the crab roll. I did not eat any of the bread and the crab salad was okay. The new york steak and eggs was the best deal. Someone at the table ordered the pancakes and they were excellent. Someone else ordered the peach and greens salad but there were almost no peaches. I heard a comment that the dressing was very nice.

It was a very disappointing experience. This is my favorite restaurant, so I brought my mother and family here for the Easter celebration, and we were all disappointed in the food choices. The shrimp toast had no visible shrimp, the N.Y. steak was very tough, and the crab roll was so bland. We will not be returning for an Easter celebration here.

We almost cancelled because we had an outdoor reservation for Easter and the weather forecast predicted rain. Really glad we didn't cancel, because everything about the experience was top notch. The prix fixed menu was excellent with very high quality food choices for each course. All of the food was delicious and there wasn't a single item that wasn't great. In fact, we already plan to come back again soon for the full menu. I had a little concern with the portion size, but 2nd course was plenty filling and we wound up taking some food home. The drinks were creative and different, which was a great change of pace. Service was excellent. Staff was very professional and knowledgeable about the menu.

Overall the food were great. The blueberries danish & the rosemary potatoes were tasteful. My company they all enjoyed their choices of food. For myself, I liked the taste of my shrimp toast but found it very greasy. Suggestion to make it open faced & thinner bread. Better yet, baked on puff pastry not fried. My crab roll, I found it a bit salty. The music was too loud, it made it difficult to carry a conversation,

What happened to the service? Pros: Food is always unique and fantastic for the most part. Great foodie spot and fantastic drinks. Cons: What the heck happened to service? When our waitress did show up she was great, but we literally went 20min between seeing here and had to ask for basic things. Latest dining experience was Easter Brunch, I know they don't do breakfast often but get it together. Prefix brunch $65 person, add a cup of coffee for $4. Only issue we had to asked 3x for coffee and they didn't have enough or enough cups. They also wanted to take the cups in the back to fill them up, just carry a dang pot of coffee!!! Again, brunch only happens a 2-3 times a year but when it's 30min between courses you should fill the coffee at the least! Waitress really was lacking and MIA much of the morning, to the point I wont' be back as they can't handle to complexity of brunch apparently. I've now had either "OK" service or just poor the last 3x we've eaten here in the last 6 months, it's no longer just and off day....

Great attention by staff menu was a lot to go over and try to narrow things down. Least liked dish for us was the scallop and prosciutto appetizer it has a lot going on and the sauce was way too sweet and overpowering took away from scallops and prosciutto. Best item was the halibut on yesterday's tasting menu that sauce was perfect in every way, fish had a nice sear and crisp a touch overcooked but the sauce redeemed itself. Dessert hands down the lava cake it was the perfect complexity of richness but not overly sweet.

Food was very good. Halibut was a bit overcooked which is a no no at a seafood restaurant. Also loaded with a butter cream sauce which just weighed the dish down. Should have had something brighter with some acid in it to lift the dish. Sea bass was quite nice. Server ignored us most of the time and she never asked how things were. The bussers were the ones taking care of everything. It was pointed how she ignored us while serving the next table when she saw we were sitting there with no food and finished our drinks. It took an hour between served drinks and getting the entree while others were finishing dessert who arrived when we did and were larger parties. Wonder if she forgot to put the order in? But there was absolutely no attempt at apology or service recovery. Great atmosphere. Drinks were great and served right away, so the bar is just fine. Won't go back because the service was awful and the food isn't good enough to tolerate that. But they will survive because the place was crowded.

Our server was perfect. Had an easy-going, personable vibe, and offered clear and helpful recommendations. Food was delicious and the menu had just enough variety. It was a smidge louder than I would like, a little difficult to have a conversation, but only mentioning in case that's an important factor to someone out there. It did not bother us too much and certainly didn't take away from a lovely experience overall.

Great restaurant and night out! Razzle and Dazzle drink was DELICIOUS and the portion size was perfect. I had two appetizers as my meal and it was yummy! Ended up mixing the jumbo shrimp and tomato appetizers together for the second half of my meal even though they were both perfect on their own. Thanks Herb & Sea for also modifying our reservation when we needed more flexibility!

I really enjoyed Herb & Sea! I ordered the shrimp linguine, the portions were just right & the food was so tasty. They also had an amazing Mocktail made with Dragonfruit.

The kitchen crushed it but we were largely ignored by our waitress who was distracted by the owners table. Took about 25 to 30 minutes per drink. Our food was served and we were done eating before our drinks were brought to us. It happened again with our dessert. Some of this was removed from the bill but it did put a damper on what was to be a night of celebration. Previous visits to this restaurant were better

The food and service exceeded expectations. Every dish had unique and versatile flavor combinations and we were wowed by the simplest things. The carrots were recommended by the server and they were probably the best carrots I’ve ever had. Ambiance is a little loud, the setting is very open and cafeteria like so if you want a quiet, more intimate feeling meal you might not get that on a Saturday night. But the food made that worth it and we would absolutely return and recommend.

To begin, our gem salad was absolutely first rate! The creamy buttermilk dressing was textured with little crumbles of goat cheese and was nicely seasoned. The textured topping added the perfect finishing touch to this fresh, hearty crunchy salad. The $89.00 ”special”, the steak and risotto, unfortunately was not what we had hoped for. The steak was tasty, but tough and difficult to chew. We would not order it again. The filet, thankfully was perfect! It was flavorful, beyond tender, and absolutely delicious. The demi-glaze upon which the steak was plated, was excellent - a perfect compliment to the filet. I would happily order the filet again!
