There are no blenders, mixers, choppers, ice cream machines, deepfryers, burr sticks, nor anything else with a motor--nothing with a plug. Food machines with motors made possible an imbalance of diet that had never occurred before: we could suddenly fry enough food to make ourselves sick, we could preserve food longer than its last dangling vitamin. Refusing food-enabling machines is another way to keep the food honest, and in reasonable balance. There is not even a freezer. No perishable ingredient may travel further than a good, strong horse. The menu will move absolutely in lockstep with the seasons, as okra and eggplant taper off and leafy greens move in, we must change ourselves to suit the product--not the other way around. What is outside is inside.
Overall, pretty disappointed. The rabbit shepherd's pie was outstanding but would have been perfect with some sort of bread. That said, the bread basket served was super crunchy crusted and so hard it was virtually inedible. The potential was there if not so seriously overcooked, but essentially ruined. The boar sausage part of the 5 course was good if a good bit over salty and a very small amount. Another missed opportunity. Salad selection and taste was very so-so. Parking was difficult and the both the number of homeless people and the nearby bus station made it a little sketchy. This was our anniversary and I was expecting so much more, and though my wife liked some of the meal, I liked very little.
Restaurant Gwendolyn is the perfect place for a romantic evening. It's expensive, but 100 percent worth it.
Delicious food and great atmosphere...I will definitely go again!
I love this restaurant. The food is expensive, but it is also delicious. I don’t even like steak, and I loved the steak I ate on the tasting menu. Plus our waiters had a sense of humor. I was just celebrating with a friend, but this would be a good space for a date as well... cozy and romantic. I don’t think there was a table for anyone more than 4.
Outstanding service and menu accommodations for allergies. Chef's menu is the way to go for best value. We ordered from the menu and were quite surprised at the small quantity of food for price. Our entrees were more like appetizer size. We opted away from chef menu as we thought it would be too much, but now realize that the five courses would provide the right amount of food.
Wonderful ambiance and food outstanding. Great selection; the bouillabaisse was wonderful.
A very cool concept and a gorgeous little space.
None of the food was anything memorable, but most of it was good.
However, I did the 7 course tasting menu and with that they choose the items for you.
This is personal preference at this point, but in every case I would have preferred the other item. Additionally, the two extra courses were my favorite things on the menu.
The servers never seemed quite sure of themselves either. Not knowing what was on a charcuterie plate. Unsure of pronunciation of wines and dishes. Little things.
In any case a cool idea and space, but the concept is better that the execution.
First time and will return for a much more complete tasting
Birthday dinner for my girlfriend was awesome. Heath was amazing!
This is our second time eating at Gwendolyn’s. A definite date night. We will go again and next time will sit at the window and watch the chef’s prepare our meals. Our waiter suggested the wine pairings with each course and we went with it. The wines chosen for us actually elevated each course beyond belief. We read that the owner has two more restaurants and we will definitely check those out as well. Fantastic!!!!
Gwendolyn is one of those experiences you'll want to repeat.
This trip was my second dinner, interspersed with a lunch a few months back. Were I to live in San Antonio Gwendolyn would be a monthly for certain place to eat. I always go for the tasting menu with paired wines... worth every penny.... I'm salivating as I type this.
I was absolutely blown away by the amazing food and service! I would highly recommend Gwendolyn for a one-of-kind experience!
The is a great experience on the River in San Antonio. The atmosphere is very cozy, and the food is just great. We really enjoyed our visit.
Tasting menu beautiful and very good. Very nice evening.
We went here for a special night out. The booking process was a cinch on opentable. We did the five-course meal and loved everything. Not a detail was left out! Minor snafu with the city trying to ticket a valeted car, but the restaurant staff and manager personally apologized — and took care of the bill. We will certainly be back.
Restaurant Gwendolyn was the perfect place to celebrate a birthday. The staff was attentive and well-versed on all the courses, the food was outstanding, and being able to sit where we could watch the kitchen prepare the food was delightful. We will be back for sure- with or without it being a special occasion!
I took my girlfriend here on a date and wanted to make it extra special. I read about Restaurant Gwendolyn online and heard it was an experience so I decided to surprise her with a trip. The setting was very intimate and the servers were amazing. The chef was even able to make her vegetarian dishes on the fly ! It is pricey but you get what you pay for. I had the seven course meal and my girlfriend had the five course meal. Both WELL worth it !
I think this is the best restaurant experience I've ever had.
Very nice, but the restaurant ran out of bread
Culinary week. Amazing food and wine paring! Staff was on point! Even had valet service! Was such an amazing evening!
Our waiter Guillermo was the best! We had a great view of the kitchen and enjoyed the creativity of the entrees and the lovely atmosphere.
We arrived early and enjoyed the quiet and beautiful ambience inside.
The staff and food were both exceptional.
Best restaurant in San Antonio. Amazing food and amazing service.
Gwendolyn is a little piece of heaven in San Antonio. The staff is very professional and sweet. The food is all fresh, of high quality and delicious. We loved the dimmed lights and the nice jazzy music in the background. A perfect place for romantic dinners or just an amazing culinary experience. Gwendolyn rules.
Best Restaurant in San Antonio. Make sure you save your pennies but it is worth every penny saved.
An extremely unique dining experience! Superb for an anniversary dinner or just nice quiet dinner. The food is wonderful and the way it is prepared is what makes it unique. Highly recommended!
Wonderful experience! Food was creative and delicious. Atmosphere was perfect for a romantic evening.
The service and food quality/taste are incredible, the portions are exceedingly small.
Memorable food and wine, exceptional service. One of our best dining experiences ever. A true delight and worth every penny. Do the chef’s tasting menu. You will not regret it.
Amazing food, wonderful service, always an enjoyable time. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the event....
This is a real gem. Having eaten at many top restaurants around the world, I can confidently say that this meal was equivalent to many I have had at Michelin starred restaurants. Too bad Michelin has not yet come to San Antonio. The tasting and pairings were superb and spoke strongly of local flavor and ingredients used masterfully.
Excellent for special occasions such as anniversaries
We had the 7 course chef's tasting menu with wine pairing and it was wonderful. I would highly recommend Restaurant Gwendolyn for a special occasion dining experience.
We had the 7 course tasting menu with wine pairing. The food and wine were both fantastic. The service was excellent. There was a large party in the dining room, which is a bit small, making the noise level higher than ideal. Overall, this was a great dining experience.
Food and service was fantastic as always!
This was the best dinner of my life. Absolutely wonderful ambiance and food. Great wait staff as well!
This small French influenced restaurant is a San Antonio gem. Our chef's tasting menu with associated wine pairing was perfect across the board. The service and presentation were outstanding and overall I felt the meal was very fairly priced for such a stellar experience.
Great food and service. As always.
Great food and dining experience... Will definitely return!
At $100 per person for the 7 course meal plus $75 per person for wine pairings, I would have expected a higher-quality meal. As courses were served, I noticed that the pricing was significantly elevated for the types of ingredients used, but as the dishes are very well presented, I thought that the end-result in taste would end up being worth it. Unfortunately, the food was very mediocre as were the wine pairings (in both selection and quality). Again, presentation is very good, so if you're looking for just a visual fine dining experience with a high-dollar menu to go with it, this is your place, but taste-wise, my experience was very underwhelming.
