I was staying in Greenville, SC en route from Columbia, SC to Ashville, NC and asked the Hotel Manager for some recommendations for restaurants in the every more popular "Farm to Table" category. She printed a list of restaurants that fit this description for historic downtown Greenville and after looking a several menus I choose American Grocery Restaurant , and was very please with the fulfillment of special requests on OpenTable, the Service and the Food and the proximity to the river and nice shops. I started with a wonderful summer salad of tomato and watermelon with a hint of a jalapeno and a light vinaigrette . Followed by a perfect Rabbit with gnocchi and fresh greens with an extra side of caramelized onions and spaetzle. The bread came with in house made local peach preserves and I asked for some extra and had it with the in house made peach tea sorbet . To finish I had a pear tart with chai ice cream!

The food was excellent.. The service was slow. Took 10 minutes to get a drink ordered and they brought appetizer right before the served the salad.

We came for a special meal during a vacation and it was one of the best restaurant meals we have had in a long time. Truly outstanding food and impeccable service. It was so good that we came back to sit at the bar and enjoy a cheese plate a separate night. Best in Greenville.

Overall scored 4 of 5. The service and attention - fantastic, otherwise score would have been 3. My steak was stringy chewy and very salty. The sauce poured over top did nothing to enhance only overpowered any chance at tasting the beef.

What did we like? The friendly welcome we received, the sophistication of our waiter on all matters relating to bourbon, the wine list which presented inventive and greatly knowledgeable alternatives to the usual offerings; and a wonderful menu--if you don't try the beef tongue--yes--you'll regret it. The portions, by the way, weren't of a size to make you gag. Come back for another meal? You'd better believe it.

What a fabulous dinner we had! Celebrated my birthday with the "Foodie Fest" menu, a 3-course fare including watermelon salad, mussels in the most incredible sauce ever created, duo of beef, rabbit tagliatelle, cornmeal peach cake, smores, and a vibrant bottle of rose! It was my first time dining at AGR, and it will most definitely not be my last. Everything was delicious - nothing left on our plates. The commitment to fresh and local sourcing stands out in each dish. Top quality and passion without pretentiousness - it speaks volumes. Thanks again, American Grocery and Ian, our wonderful server. He was delightful to talk to!

Small but cool decor. Pretty noisy. Food was great and creatively plated. Went during Foodie Fest and shared duo of beef and trout. Both were excellent! Also added the wine pairing. Finished the meal with the S'mores and Banana Pudding. Will definitely return!
