Food Over Priced. Service Outstanding. Ambiance very interesting.
We've been going to Red Stag for years. Until recently, it has always delighted us on our special occasions. Recently it hasn't. Earlier this week, it was its worst. Crying babies were seated throughout -- instead of together at one end or the other of the restaurant. Service was poor -- we sat for 10 minutes before our server showed up, then another ten for our wine bottle to be opened and decanted. Then we finally decided to pour our own wine. The capper was the steak. It was virtually inedible. Hard to get a steak knife through it. And under-cooked. Medium rare comes out rare, and medium comes out medium well. We were not charged for dessert or corkage, presumably because it was a birthday, which was appreciated, and we tipped our server over 20% for those favors. We very disappointingly won't be returning to Red Stag again. It's certainly not the fine restaurant it once was.
This place was outstanding. Everything about this place was very nice. The service, the food, the atmosphere. Had an amazing time. I proposed to my fiancé that night. It was the perfect place to do.
This is my first review on Open Table even though we dine a lot through the reservation system. This was a phenomenal meal. The calamari starter was crispy and the sauce was just right. The Carolina Peach Salad was superb. My wife had the Halibut and I have the Filet and Lobster with crab. Our expectations were more than exceeded. The Grilled Lemon Poundcake with blueberry compote was a little dry, but all the pieces were in place for a great desert except maybe it was a day old?? Service by David A was outstanding. The restaurant is dark, but it works. The backlit menus are interesting and necessary due to the light. Decor is that of a game lodge, but it works. Kessler has done a great job on this property and restaurant in particular. After the meal, we took the elevator up to one of the floors to just take a peek. The hallway was spectactular, so I am assuming the rooms are as well.
This is the second time we have had
lunch here while visiting Asheville. The crab and corn chowder was excellent and the shrimp and grits were the best that my husband has ever had. My son and myself had two different fantastic salads with lots of veggies and smoked chicken. The Red Stag did not disappoint. We will be back again when we visit.
Awesome food great service killer atmosphere and our server Brad was excellent. Definitely a go to date night spot for Asheville
Took my wife to The Red Stagg Grill for our 1 one year wedding anniversary. We showed up early so we had a drink from the bar, the rum old fashioned was one of the best I've had. We were sat at the table I requested in my reservation and split the Hunt Board to start. Note: the mustard is very good but hot!! My wife ordered the ribeye and I had the elk tenderloin, both came out cooked perfectly and tasted great.
I will definitely be eating here again when I visit Asheville.
One of the best halibut dishes I’ve ever eaten. Husband had the elk loin and he said it was excellent. One could think it would be touristy but not tasty food but this would be a misconception. It was a first class meal. Would happily eat here again when in Asheville.
Met a friend for lunch that I had not seen for a while. Great time catching up!
We went for brunch and the food was very good! I would make reservations again and send my friends/family there! Great for special occasions or just for something different!
Excellent venue - classy with superb service! Very friendly, professional & courteous - the food is greet!
We enjoyed dinner at Red Stagg Grill during our recent visit to Asheville. We dined early, before going to a special event across the street at the Biltmore Estate, and it was convenient, delicious food, great service and a comfortable atmosphere. We will go back again the next time we're in Asheville.
This was our second visit to this establishment. The service is outstanding! The food amazing! If you get a chance, enjoy their Christmas Dinner! You will not regret your decision.
Our waitress - Karen (Spelling??) was by far, one of the best waitresses we have ever encountered.
Overall impression for first time diners: Disappointing, and not very welcoming. Started with confusion as we entered bar for an aperitif, as we waited to be seated and no one came for a while. Moved chairs around ourselves to seat our 3 person party, with a full team of employees watching us. Would not have killed someone to help us. Instead of a warm welcome, was reminded strongly by our greeter to close bar tab before dinner. OK, no prob...but annoying to hear more than once. Dinner was fine, but very expensive for what we got. Restaurant very dark.
Ashevillians, nothing so terrible, but do think there are other superior alternative choices around.
on vacation, recommended from a friend, delicious breakfast!
We were staying nearby and went here primarily to get a good steak dinner and we were not disappointed. Excellent food, a great drink selection and fantastic staff. It is on the more expensive side but you get what you pay for and we all throughly enjoyed the meal. Our only complaint was that it was a little dark and the main light source for the table (a candle) had a red shade around it giving our food a red glow which was not always welcome. Due to the darkness in there, the menus all light up, which is pretty cool, but can be quite bright to look at once your eyes have adjusted to the darkness.
Wonderful ambiance. Delightful tasting menu with wine pairings. Will definitely return.
AMAZING in every aspect. Our server Harrison went above and beyond and was very knowledgeable concerning wine pairings for our meals. We will be back!
We loved the hotel and the ambiance of the restaurant, but were underwhelmed by our entrees. The Red Stag was recommended to us by several trusted sources, so we may have simply landed on an off night.
Everything was great except for the parents who would not take their screaming babies out of the restaurant
Beautiful baronial atmosphere; wonderful menu selection; perfectly prepared and presented meals; professional, personable wait-staff; complimentary valet parking with the nicest valets EVER - what could be better. Food - always delicious. Try it...you'll love it!!
Great food in this hotel restaurant.
Arrived late on Friday night with a reservation - staff were very accommodating, allowing us to check-in and freshen-up before taking our table.
Food was very well presented and enjoyable.
Been going to Red Stag for lunch at least 4-5 times a year for lunch with my best friend for years now. It’s becone “our place.” They usually seat us in a great place by a window & we love it.
The service has always been superb, from the guys who park our cars ( a PLUS), to the always impeccable waiters.
One of my favorite places in Asheville.
Great service from a very knowledge staff which started at the bar .. Delicious food , steak cut with butter knife .. Salad was very fresh .. Very nice , quite place for a romantic dinner ..
A most interesting venue with superb service and awesome food. We had the 4 course meal with premium wine pairings, and not only were the proportions perfect but the taste was outstanding. Loved Bradley as our server. Very efficient and informative professional server. Will definitely come back on our return visit to Asheville.
Thoroughly enjoyed the steak. Gazpacho was also delicious.
One of our most favorite Asheville restaurants. Great food, great atmosphere and great service. Don’t miss this gem of a restaurant in Asheville.
The comfortable ambiance makes a special occasion more special!
One of the best meal I have had. Great value for what you get.
David, our waiter, was insanely efficient and also made great recommendations on food and drink. We received a free dessert due to our anniversary being the occasion for visiting. The service and food were excellent. If you're in Asheville, you MUST eat here.
We celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary there. It was delightful. Great filet mignon, not a large piece but flavorful, all tender meat, not a scrap left!
Very nice, upscale dinner. A little pricey. We had the fixed-price 4-course tasting menu selection. All courses were good, but portions were small. Waiter was very attentive. Assistant breezed by and tossed the plates on the table. Had identified that the occasion was an anniversary, but no recognition of our occasion was made. Very nice atmosphere. Free valet parking was convenient and under cover, good since it looked like it might rain.
I had the duck breast and it was perfectly cooked and delicious! Thank you Paul for your wonderful service !
My wife and I went to the restaurant for our five year anniversary. We don’t usually spend $100 on dinner but this was a special night. When the prices are this high we expect the service and food to be superior. What we got was slow to non existent service and mediocre food. It started with the hostesses did not seem to want to be bothered with us. But the party that came after us that had the same reservation time were seated 10 minutes before us. We both had the ribeye and a side. We both asked for medium temperature. My wife’s steak was thinner than mine but bigger around. My steak temperature was fine. Hers was well done. It took forever to get the food so we did not send it back. We shared my steak and picked at hers. I expect that at $38 for a single piece of meat that it is a high quality steak. Both of ours was chewy and fatty. When we have eaten at places like this before the sides are typically family style. These sides are not. Not a big issue but it would have been nice to know. Now for the service. We were there at 6:30 on at Friday night. 8/24/18. The restaurant was not overly crowded. It took several minutes before anyone came around to see us. We ordered our drinks and food at the same time. We ordered a Diet Coke and a sweet tea. We got them quickly but when it was time for a refill of my tea it was at least 15 minutes before he stopped by to get the glass. He took the glass away and it took another 10 minutes to get it back. When the food came it took several minutes for the waiter to come back around. We did not see him (David) again until it was time to pay the bill. The food was not as good as it should have been but customer service can go a long way to making us want to try it again. My wife and I both felt like we were not really welcome in the place. We drove up in a Kia not a Bentley. If I had been wearing a Rolex maybe our service would have been better. We had two steaks, two sides, a Diet Coke and sweet tea. $96. $0 tip. Disappointed!!!
Excellent service and ambiance. You won’t find better.
Wonderful food, pleasant atmosphere, good service. Couldn’t ask for more
I took my colleague and girlfriend to the Red Stag for breakfast for her birthday. Maximillian was our server and he was impeccable! He was professional and courteous with a warmth that encouraged celebrating this happy occasion. As both of us are vegetarian, he helped tailor the Eggs Benedict into Eggs Florentine for us. And he always seemed to know when we needed more decaf and cream!
First time in a long time but had a great time...Elk loin & peach salad delicious & interesting. Nothing “game-y” in their game!
Had a delicious brunch. Every meal was prepared and presented beautifully. Corinne took great care of the table and is lovely. Everyone at this wonderful restaurant is very professional and work hard to ensure their guests have a perfect experience.
