The entire experience was fantastic. Staff at the bar and the waitstaff were knowledgeable and friendly. The food was wonderful, may be one of the best steaks either of us has ever had. Would definitely recommend to others for a special meal!

We enjoyed a great manhatten cocktail and a delicious appetizer along with an excellent rib eye with mushrooms and a very tasty creamed spinach. The best was the bananas foster for dessert.

This is a great steak restaurant but can be very loud with the open air environment from the bar, Be prepared to shell out some dough for dinner. Look at the menu prior to your visit so you know what you are going in to. Wine selection was excellent and the steaks were great, both our sides were cold which was disappointing but were tasty none the less. Asked for a quiet table on the reservation and had a table of 20 next to us, couldn’t hear ourselves speak and out a damper on our 25th anniversary

Rare Steakhouse is a RARE find. The classic appearance of the use of wood, lighting and table setting creates a warm, comfortable mood. The servers are responsive to the needs of the diners, quick to appear, pleasant to interact with and unobtrusive as we conversed. Our server was knowledgeable and responded to menu and drink questions accurately and helpfully. Lastly, the starter was excellent and the steaks....oh my.... were superb. As the movie dialogue goes, "We'll be back" the next time we're in town.

Rare Steakhouse is always a great experience. We went on a Saturday evening after a UW game during the Taste of Madison festival on the square. It was much busier than usual, but the service was still fantastic and attentive.

Rare is one of my favorite places to eat...my family and I love to come to Rare and we enjoy the ambiance and the music. We really love the Bananas Foster dessert and we get it every time! Staff is wonderful too! Very pleasant and professional!

We were greeted by young stuffy hosts. The restaurant setting was romantic, but it was too dark to the read the menu without a flashlight and too cold for comfort. Our waitress was very attentive and informative, however, her support waiters/waitresses were bad; forgetting 2 of our requests. Our steaks were good and the sides and dessert were excellent.

Great steakhouse. The accompaniment portions were enough to feed a party of 4. The steaks were cooked to perfection, and the salmon was the best I’ve ever tasted. The service was excellent and the ambience was exactly what a fine steakhouse should be. Highly recommend!

Unfortunately, our server was not the friendliest or timely and our food was not hot. The french onion soup and loaded mashed potatoes were cold. They also swapped the temperatures on the steaks. Overall, a poor experience for the expense.

I was looking forward to a return visit to Rare, not there since pre-pandemic. This review is mixed. Ambience was great, as always. Our waiter was very friendly, though I felt rushed. Dishes came out too fast for the quality/ambience of this restaurant. My Manhattan was nothing special, though served in a glass enclosure that contained smoke. Our Caesar salad was OK, but nothing special. Standard croutons, standard lettuce, no creativity. I miss the tableside Caesar that they used to make and was definitely worth the steep priced. Our steaks, a special 10 oz. dry aged ribeye center with Cognac sauce, were EXCELLENT. The loaded baked potato was also nothing special and not very loaded. Green beans were nicely done, with a hefty portion. All in all a very good, but not great meal. And of course the price was quite steep.

We celebrated my husband's birthday at Rare Steakhouse. This was our first visit, and we were very happy with everything. The inside of the restaurant was beautifully done and right up our alley with the dark woods, leather, and dark ceiling. It felt cozy, welcoming, and romantic, just like an old steakhouse should be. The food was great! My husband ordered the bone-in, dry-aged ribeye and it was cooked perfectly and very tender; and my scallops were delicious and cooked perfectly. Our waitress, Luciana, was wonderful, very warm & friendly, and very knowledgeable about their menu selections and the prep of each item. We have requested her for our future visits. Owen, the sommelier, was great and also very knowledgeable. We were very pleased to find one of our favorite California wines on the menu from Long Meadow Ranch, an excellent wine. Owen was a breath of fresh air and so were the wine selections. He's done well. Jon, one of the managers, was also very knowledgeable and we enjoyed our bourbon discussions with a fellow bourbon fan. These 3 made our celebration even more enjoyable and were all warm, friendly, and fun to talk to. We will definitely be returning to Rare Steakhouse.

We had high expectations but the overall experience was disappointing. Service was good but some of the dishes were simply sad. prosciutto profiteroles were ok and the cesar salad can only be described as a "gas station salad". I can get the same quality at a Quik Trip. Steak was fine, nothing special. We gave Rare a second try, but we wont be back for a third.

They switched up my stake with my friends and we didn't notice until a few bites in. When we let them know they didn't do anything about it and just said sorry. When you pay $100 for a steak, it has to be perfect.

Very disapointing meal, French Onion soup was so salty it was inedible, replaced by Lobster Bisque, which was quite good but still a bit salty, two very small ciabatta rolls were ok strawberry butter was interesting, Salmon was good but very small portion, Duck Confit was not cooked correctly and very tough, If all this wasn’t enough, the Asparagus side was horrible and inedible, we ordered Bernaise to accompany it which was ok, managers handling of our complaint was not appropriate, a simple apology and with an adjustment to the check, or desert or something , instead we got the explanation of how it was prepared…but the chef obviously did not taste the product and it was not trimmed properly. Way too many flaws for this level of dining, it was noisy too and bad choice of pop music Crème Brûlée was very good. Seems like a job for Restaurant Impossible.

We go to Rare once or twice a year for special occasions, and we’ve had the good fortune of working with Genevieve on our last several visits. She is an absolute gem, and we can’t sing her praises highly enough. She’s warm, friendly, extremely knowledgeable, and a delight. The food is always outstanding, and we especially love being seated in the library room.

Jahar was outstanding. His knowledge of the menu and recommendations were spot on. While he was training and juggling multiple tables he made our experience feel like we were the only ones there. The food was incredible and prepared to perfection, Not only would we highly recommend the restaurant we would also reocmmend to everyone that Jahar takes care of them while dining.

Our server was pushing us to order the more expensive cut of meat which was over-salted and tough compared to what we were originally going to order. When we tried to pay, we were told the card was de-magnetized and wasn’t working. We asked if it could manually entered and our server then returned with the manager not being subtle about the whole situation. He also assumed the man in our group was paying (the woman tried to pay) so he pointedly asked him for a second form of payment. The whole experience was tainted with how we were treated when we tried to pay for a meal that isn’t even worth the price.

Great food, service was excellent. Our waitress was fantastic. Order the bananas foster, won't be disappointed as they make it right in front of you. For a drink, order the smoked infused old fashion.

Once again we had a perfect experience at Rare! The food was fabulous- steaks done perfectly, chili shrimp was soooo good & perfect proportion for my husband & I for an appetizer! My main reason for reviewing was the service. It is always impeccable at Rare! Camdon was our waiter. So friendly and knowledgeable! And Genevieve was our bartender. Again, so friendly & knowledgeable! Cannot wait to go back!

This was our first visit to downtown Madison. We chose the restaurant for its convenient location to the Orpheum theatre. Classic downtown steakhouse reminded us of Chicago or any big city venue. Leather seating, dim lighting and a nice bar. Everything is a la carte so salad, vegetable, potatoe all up-charged. Service was timely but our server "reminded" my wife he had just explained an offering when she asked a question. Also, he was mechanical with his script. Some friendly banter or questions about our visit might have softened the experience. All in all the food was great and even though a bit pricey pretty much what you would expect.
