Rare is a gem in Madison. My husband and I dined at Rare for our Anniversary. While checking in they wished us a happy Anniversary as they must have read this in the notes. Our server was exceptional as well as the food and deserts. We will definitely be back. They also had a great bar area for after dinner drinks
Great service. Great food. Our server was extremely knowledgeable and very attentive. We had a gift card and tried a number of things on the menu, both surf and turf options of appetizers and dinners. Pleased with all of our choices.
The lobster bisque is delicious. They used to do the ceaser salad tableside and something about that made it totally delicious, however they stopped and it was the most bland ceaser I've ever had and not worth the $11/12. The demo glace is an amazing addition to your steak, so good I wanted to drink it!! The bananas Foster is a fun tableside dessert and worth it, but don't order the creme brulee for $10 you get about 3 bites vs the bannannas Foster is 4x the size. Service is always impeccable and very knowledgeable! It will cost a pretty penny, but worth it in the end!
Great place and atmosphere. Quiet in the Library. Great staff and Manager. Helpful on selecting menu items. The food is always excellent. Love the Banana's Foster.
Everything about Rare was absolutely wonderful except the unbelievable noise level. I couldn't hear my dinner guest and we were seated in the same booth. BUT I would go again in a heartbeat. I haven't tasted a steak that magnificently prepared in 20 years in this town.
Good steak and service, but overpriced wine and entree's compared to other steak houses in Madison offering equivalent quality steaks and wines. Very noisy as well.
Hard upsell attempts on liquor got awkward and difficult to politely deny. Mentioned twice we had a big birthday in the group - not even a verbal mention. The strip on the menu was tough and pieces were uncuttable. Purposefully left half my steak as leftovers and was never given my leftovers. Not great for a special occasion with out of town visitors or a strip steak.
The food was amazing!! Well worth every penny. Staff was great, very professional. I have food allergies and they were very informative. I can't stress how amazing the food is. Can't pass this restaurant up.
We celebrated my 35th birthday at Rare! Besides a few mistakes our experience was so awesome! Definitely ask for Ryan aka “miller lite guy”as your server. He made our night complete best waiter I have ever had! Definitely recommend
First time.... Beautiful!
Looked forward to a Christmas Eve dinner at Rare in Madison. The food did not disappoint. Steaks were cooked perfectly and salads and sides were most enjoyable as well. A few items made our evening less enjoyable. Arrived 25 minutes before our scheduled reservation in order to enjoy a drink in the bar. Our waitress appeared promptly and took our order. We waited about 20-25 minutes to get our cocktails. Groups that came after and sat at the bar were served promptly. Meanwhile the hostess appeared twice during our wait to take us to our table. Once the drinks arrived, two of the three were not garnished as ordered. We were then hustled to our table. So much for a cocktail before dinner. Once seated were felt pressured to order our salads right away. They arrived promptly, but then had to wait to order our entrees. My second cocktail order lacked the garnish as requested. Again, the food was wonderful but the service was less than adequate which is what I would expect. We will try again, but probably not in the near future.
A wonderful Christmas Eve dinner. It was, as expected, a busy night, but the restaurant was adequately staffed for it. Jose took exceptional care of us; he is an asset to Rare. Our wine, cocktails and dinner were perfect. We both have had too much red meat lately, so we opted for the Tuscan Chicken. We were NOT disappointed. It was great, as good as any steak dinner. It was a perfect night.
I thought that the food was delicious however the pacing of the food was not up to par based off of my experiences with white table cloth restaurants. For example, typically after ordering your drinks, unused wine glasses are cleared. The server cleared it after the entree arrived. I felt rushed to finish my appetizer because I had five minutes to consume it before the entree had arrived. Typically the timing is perfect and my entree arrives as I am finishing my salad. She didn’t clear the plates constantly so they started to stack up. Also, after the entrees are cleared, I’m used to the tablecloths being cleaned of crumbs before considering a dessert. She also did not mention the special nor did she tell me about the other options for sparkling water which was presented to other tables. In summary, food was delicious but the service needs work to be considered fine dining to my standards or even that of other white table cloth restaurants.
Excellent as always; the best steakhouse in Dane county
Staff is very friendly. Food is outstanding!! Everything we tasted is well worth the money. Perfect spot for post theatre dinner. We will definitely be back after all of the shows we attend, which are monthly.
No details to leave
Exceptional service and food to match. Highly recommend.
Both of us were sick after eating the shrimp on 12-19-18
Very friendly waitstaff
Outstanding steaks and the service was perfect.
Service - excellent
Food - very good to excellent
Total of the bill - highly very excellently expensive
Great atmosphere, attentive service and delicious food.
Great way to start our evening before a play
Service and food were excellent, the only blemish was actually the Maitre de or manager that greeted us at the door, he was cold and aloof and clearly not happy to see us, on a scale or 1 to 10 I would give him a 1. It's a shame, for all that is good about Rare, the greeting should be as good as the food and service.
Our anniversary! Everything was fantastic!
Food was amazing. Wait staff was very friendly and explained every thing on the menu. I would recommend Rare Steakhouse to others. Atmosphere was very nice.
Wonderful dinner as always...fantastic steaks! Sad there is no tableside ceasar anymore, but looking forward to trying the steak tartar next time. Scarborough fare cocktail a must! Also, plenty of gluten free options, including the hashbrowns. Great place for a celebration dinner!
Great place. Service could have been better, had to request drinks several times and waiter got it wrong a few times but it was very busy. Food was excellent, will visit again.
Glad we gave it a second try. Last year for our first visit we were a little disappointed. This time it was excellent. Much improved service. Very engaging and attentive in both bar and dining room. Food was outstanding for all four of us.
Would now highly recommend. Ambiance is outstanding - beautiful woodwork, lighting, leather curved booths as well as tables and a very comfortable bar area.
Very long wait for food and drinks.
Baked potatoes way over cooked, corn casserole under cooked, service marginal.
Amazing food, worth the expense. Waitstaff could be more attentive to empty drinks.
Fantastic meal, perfect pairing for our show at Orpheum.
My husbands birthday
Love going to Rare. However, this last time our steak was over done and waiter never returned to ask us how the steak was cooked. Love everything else.
A special night for my wife and I to celebrate our anniversary with dinner out before the Madison Symphony. We parked just around the corner and had an easy walk to Rare, and after dinner another easy walk from there to the Overture Center. The service at Rare was impeccable - from the meet and greet to checking of our coats to being seated and served. The service was exceptional with knowledgeable and capable wait and service staff. The food was exceptional and well prepared and presented and the wait staff kept their attention on us as we progressed through the meal to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. The manager paid a visit to inquire as well. We enjoyed the evening and the setting and would highly recommend Rare!
Great environment. Nice wine list. However, our waiter gave a very long speech up-talking a 100 day aged bone in ribeye, it was to have little to no fat; unfortunately when it was brought out, it was over half fat. It was relayed to the waiter but nothing was done about it. Yes the flavor was there but for the price it was not worth all of the fat.
Absolutely the finest dining experience in Madison! The food and drinks are 5 star. The service is unmatched anywhere in the area. We will be back again and again!
Excellent experience. The wine was great and the steak was right on. Service was top notch. Would highly recommend it
The food was good from the seared tuna to the root vegetable soup to the filet. But most outstanding was the service. Our server team (Heidi and Jacqueline) were so amazing! They made the experience and evening special.
Another great meal at Rare. We had the high top option and the bar area wa great. We had a great view of the bar and the street. The shrimp cocktail appetizer was great. Our filet was cooked to perfection. Our waiter was great. They did not have the wine my wife wanted to he gave her two samples for her to try. In a surprising outcome she chose a wine variety she would normally not chose. The overall experience was excellent.
