The restaurant was okay but something was wrong with the speakers causing a high pitch ringing. It gave me and my girlfriend serious headaches. The staff was nice enough to let us move around. Great service overall. But something needs to be done about that. Warning for anyone that does not like migraine inducing sounds just chose to sit outside.
The overall meal and experience was good. Two of us had ordered the wagyu ($23per ounce) and when it arrived, it had not been trimmed well..so it was very fatty in parts... we couldn't eat about 2oz each, and they did apologize and take the few oz off our bill, but it did impact our meal and experience. I would not order it again from Rare.
Our first time was excellent, however, this time was disappointing.
There was no continuity in service this time; long gaps without checking in with clients. Waiter was extremely loud. Hostesses were outstanding, as they were before.
Excellent food and ambiance. Best steaks ever!
We had a wonderful anniversary dinner at Rare. Service and food were both very, very good.
Excellent as always!
Perfect meal! Every item was done to perfection as well as plated beautifully. We had filet mignon, bone in ribeye and lobster and they were all super scrumptious! This is the best steakhouse we have ever been to! Absolutely fantastic! We can’t wait to go back!
We love this steakhouse! There is bar seating, a main dining room and a library seating area. The ambiance is dark wood, cozy private booths, stamped tin ceilings and white table cloths. You can imagine the politicians from the Wisconsin Capital which is located right across the street drinking fine wine and scotch while making deals in dark corners. The steak is excellent. They are generous with the sides, a favorite of which is the lobster mac and cheese or the loaded hash browns. The Caesar salad made table side to order is a throw back to when dining out was as much about the experience and service as it was about the food. The popovers are served hot out of the oven and are to die for! We always beg for a few extra to take back with us to our hotel for breakfast the next morning. We eat here every time we are in Madison visiting our son at the University.
Overall good experience. Service was great. Food quality and flavors were good but not great for the price. Costs were too high for market and I've had as high quality for more than half the cost elsewhere in Madison. It's worth going at least once for top notch service and experience.
Our first visit was a special treat for my birthday. My husband and I enjoy steak and we were not disappointed at Rare Steakhouse. Our server (captain) was professional and funny and the food was wonderful. Our dessert took a while to arrive but that was the only detail we found less than perfect. Rare is our new favorite restaurant!
Steaks not cooked properly after two attempts. Manager was embarrassed! Comped our meal which we never had.
This is one of the pricier restaurants I've frequented. When I compare it to Ruths Chris, The Wonder Bar and The Madison Club, Rare takes a back seat to none of them. It may be the priciest of the 4, but for the quality of their food and their service, I would say that they're the best in Dane county for sure! The only place I've eaten at that I enjoy more is Hugo's Cellar in Las Vegas... but that's a heck of a long drive! I'll take Rare!!!!
Great service, great food, great time!!! Definitely will be back- often.
Scallops were the best I ever had. Everyone was polite, friendly and attentative to all our needs.
We were greeted with smiles and the pleasantness of the staff carried through our dinner. Fantastic steaks and lovely wine options.
Excellent service and a delicious meal. May be pricey for some but consider it a great experience.
We had the best service, great food and overall experience ever. We can't wait to go back.
This steak house has lots of atmosphere and charm. The service was exceptional, starting with the friendliness of the hostess. Food was outstanding and the service by my server, Alex, was superb. I plan to return to this restaurant on my next trip to Madison.
Rare serves quality food and has very good service. It is on the expensive side, but you get what you pay for! We are always happy that they allow us to split an expensive steak which helps to keep the cost down. Also, the side dishes are not only large enough to share, but sharing is encouraged. If you go, choose one of the table side preparations, ie. the table side Cesar Salad or the flaming desserts. It is a very fun experience and the cook gives great tips and extra information.
My King Crab legs were luke warm, and the butter that came with the crab legs was warm but got cold quick. We had a really nice time at the bar with James before dinner.
The service provided by Carli and her assistant Ashley was great. The lobster bisque was awesone along with the bread and butter provided. But for the price of the steaks I have had better steaks elsewhere. Dry aging steaks is great and it enhances the flavor but to put no seasoning on a steak not even salt makes it blah. But then you have to pay additionally for anything that might make the steak flavorful. And to bring out au jus with a $75 steak says the chef knows the beef flavor alone isnt enough to justify paying such a high price for steak let me give you some very cheap to make au jus to make your steak taste better.
And I have worked in the industry for 25 years and 15 years working for steak houses. I was underwhelmed with the steaks. Everything else was great. Huge wine list great service great atmosphere but the only thing I came for was the steak and it let me down.
If you enjoy a beautiful cut of meat, Rare won’t disappoint. Preparation was perfect.
Enjoyed the table side preparation of the Caesar salad. Unexpected and fun twist. Delicious.
One of the finest wine list available in Madison.
Steaks were extremely pricey for the quality received. I have gotten steaks that were more tender and flavorful for a third the price. Definitely disappointed. The duck fat fries were a delightful surprise and the wedge salad was as well. The setting is gorgeous if you want romantic.
I had heard good reviews about the restaurant and was excited to surprise my husband with dinner at Rare for his first meal home from deployment. We were left utterly disappointed. Our experience started by having to wait just for a table outside to be cleaned as all were still full of dishes. Upon finally being seated we were graced with a waitress who had little care to be working and showed that with her attrochious attire and lack of any attention to any of her guests. An hour and a half after ordering their "best steak" it finally arrived. What was to be a medium steak was well done, the only juice provided by the au jue that it was doused in. It tasted like nothing more than an over done, dried roast beef. Our waitress was no where to be found except to drop our bill off. When I provided the manager with our distaste in the entire experience, after having paid the bill and not asking for any consideration, he simply stated had I said something earlier he could have done something but now he wouldn't do a thing. As I expressed to him, it's quite difficult when our waitress was never present. A simply apology for nothing but a waste of money and my husband receiving a terrible meal as his first meal back would have suffice and yet that was apparently also too much to ask for. I would not recommend Rare at all. It was a terrible experience all around.
Had been here before and it was fantastic. This time not even close. We were celebrating so I didn't want to complain and ruin the occasion. Just really dissapointed. Paid the bill and left.
When we walked in we got to meet the Sous Chef who then brought out some unbelievable meatballs.
Service was great, food was awesome. Overall great experience.
Everything was amazing and our server was fantastic!
The food was excellent and that you had Duckhorn Merlot by the glass was wonderful. Wait staff was attentive but the main (front) server spoke very quietly and was hard to hear. (it was not busy) Great experience-bar tender was friendly.
We had a wonderful night. Tom our waiter was wonderful as was all the staff - so friendly and go out of their way to give you a great experience. Great food - couldn't have asked for a better night!
Pricy but good
The food was delicious and the service was impeccable.
Food was amazing. Service was a little slow, especially since we were the only people in the restaurant. Nonetheless, we had a great time.
Our server was knowledgeable, friendly, and on top of of things.
Steaks were cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious.
Delicious appetizers to share .
I was underwhelmed. Graduation night dinner was to be a special occasion. Disappointed they had a prefix menu. It was not crowded. They serve large amounts patrons any other day and do not rely on a prefix menu.
We enjoyed our first visit to Rare Steakhouse. The atmosphere was warm and comfortable. Our server, Ryan, was top notch - he made us feel welcome and was attentive throughout the evening. The table side Caesar salad was great. Our steaks were prepared just as we ordered and delicious. Looking forward to a return visit.
Food is mostly great, but rather overpriced. The service was pretty bad, though. The first hour was fine, then we got ignored and it took a full 45 minutes to get dessert, almost making us late for our show.
I would NOT recommend it.
Great classic steak house with top level service, wine choice, and overall experience.
Great food and cocktails! Service is hit or miss depending on who is waiting and how busy they are.
By no means was the food bad, in fact is was very good. That being said it was not $65 for a steak good. I have had dry aged steak before and it was worth every dime. This was not the same. I could made this on my own grill for $10. If that really was a dry aged steak don't bother. Go to Johnny Delmonico's and have a $65 stake that's worth the money.
Good food but overpriced. Waiter was rather pushy and seemed annoyed that we didn’t order right away.
