We've been here a few times and normally have amazing service. We went to Rare for my fiance's birthday and the service was mediocre at best. We pre-orders wine and the wine was placed at the furthest point on the table from where we were sitting. That wouldn't have been an issue if our waitress ever checked on us. She didn't and I let the restaurant know in advance that we were celebrating my fiance's birthday. The food was good, except my steak came rare, definitely not medium as I ordered. Thankfully my fiance's food was perfect. It amazes me that people bring small children to this restaurant and wear their exercise gear. Not having a dress code is a definite drawback.
Brought our 3 adult children for their birthdays, all within days of each other, and had a great night!
We had an excellent experience at Rare. The filet and the dry-aged bone-in porterhouse were cooked perfectly and delicious. Ryan was a fantastic waiter.
We enjoyed catching up with our son over a fabulous meal!

It was our 1st time dining at RARE. It was my husband's birthday, and the staff made our experience wonderful! They even printed his name on Dave's menu! Our waiter Marc Anthony was fantastic! He really made our evening fun and special!

Terrible steak. Prepared fine, but the cut of meat had absolutely no flavor and definitely was something other than advertized. We were told that the Capitol Cut was the heart of a ribeye, but it tasted more like the sole of my shoe.
Mashed potatoes and vegetables added nothing to the meal. We both agreed that the dessert was very good. Overall, extremely disappointing experience and do not recommend.
The steak was cooked to perfection and the loaded whipped potatoes were amazing. Servers are very knowledgeable about wines. My girlfriend and I dine at Rare once a year and are highly satisfied each time.

Recommend, yes, but be ready for a nice size bill. One room has a great Capital View. Bar is gorgeous and has decent happy hour specials.
Salmon and Filet were awesome. Kale Salad was big enough for a meal if it had some Chicken/Fish/Meat with it.
Dessert were sinful.
Wine list was sufficient and had affordable bottles on it.
Very expensive for portion size, one of our steaks ordered had to be sent back to be cooked a bit more then came back over done. Could not tell the difference between the 6 oz Filet and 10 Oz Capital cut sizes seemed same. Even the server couldn't tell.
Obnoxious large/loud group of women that brought noise level up in main dining room so much that the rest of main dining room had to start almost yelling to compensate.
Lovely and quiet ambiance. Great wine and mixed drink selections. The dry-aged steak was tender and delicious. I would only wish they'd served the steak on hot/sizzling plates so the food can keep warm longer. other than that the service and food was outstanding.

The filets were excellent; the lobster bisque was smooth and rich. We were celebrating a birthday and the champagne and dessert were unexpected and a very nice touch. Perhaps the best of all were the Manhattans; pricy but well worth it!

Service was a bit slow. The noise level is too high. The portion size with the salmon was tiny and the amount of lobster bisque that was served was miniscule. The soup was only luke warm.
It was a weekday lunch and we were there from 11:30am - 1:50pm! The waitstaff apologized once for the delay in service, but avoided eye contact with us most of the meal. It would have been helpful if the wait staff was more attentive (making sure our drinks were never empty etc).
We were extremely disappointed with our experience at Rare. We came for Restaurant Week lunch, so a very limited menu, but options we were excited to try. Our waiter was very aloof and seemed annoyed to be there, but we didn't think it was a big deal. I was there with 2 friends. Myself and 1 friend had come from work for lunch, the other is on maternity leave and brought her baby. We figured lunch would be about an hour, since it's three courses. For a location on the square, we expect most of their lunch clientele to be working (from the people we saw, that seemed to be accurate). Our first course came very quickly at about 12:10, or 10 minutes after being seated and 5 minutes after ordering. Great! Then, we waited 45 minutes for our entrees. It's almost 1, we're hungry and annoyed, but ok, great, food is here. All of our food is luke warm, bordering on cold, so clearly we waited all that time for our food to be sitting somewhere while our waiter did something else? We noticed that no one in our seating area had gotten entrees in this amount of time, so I'm not sure what he was doing. When the waiter finally brought our entrees at almost 1 pm, I expressed to him that we were there on our lunch break, so could we have our checks so that we could leave right after the final course. He seemed annoyed. At 1:15 he brought our checks (20 minutes after entrees were delivered), and at 1:20 our desserts came out. If we hadn't been very proactive with paying, it would've been well over an hour and a half for a lunch menu that only has 8 TOTAL items. We have a lot of empathy for servers, because we know things can happen, but the complete lack of apologies or care for timing from our server really left a bad taste in our mouths. We'll skip going next time.

Overall Rare was okay. We went for restaurant week to give it a try and I was quite disappointed in how small the portions were for for the price. My salmon was literally the size of the oyster shell. It’s a good thing we had ordered two sides otherwise I would have left hungry. The Wisco salad was wonderful, the dessert was good, and steak was tasty. When it came down to the end of it for $150.00 dinner I would prefer a full size meal from tornado room or seafood from sardine.
Dinner at Rare during restaurant week was excellent. Food was delicious, staff went over and above to make sure we were satisfied. Lobster bisque was very tasteful and steaks were done to exactly as ordered.
Great food and service. Two of our steaks were initially under cooked, but this was rectified quickly. Because it was a special menu ( restaurant week) I missed my favorite dessert: chocolate cake!!
A "rare" treat! Host/hostess were most flexible when we asked for a different table upon our arrival, but actually were most pleased with the better/original suggested table. Waiter Mitchell (and his staff) were wonderfully pleasant and accommodating....he/they knew just when to engage.
We drive nearly 100 miles to dine in Madison, and "Rare" is NEVER a disappointment. Loved our selections and cocktails, plus our choice of wine...enjoyed the remainder of the bottle in our hotel later that evening. We will definitely return for another memorable meal and first-class experience. The ONLY (constructive) criticism would be that the background music was a "bit" louder than it needed to be...but really enjoyed the musical choices, which made up for that.
Great steaks, service and experience. From the bartenders to the wait staff, we were treated in a very friendly and competent manner. Our table captain was delightful, and did a nice job of educating us on the various cuts of meat, how they were aged, and what to expect.
We were their for our anniversary and everyone worked together to create a wonderful dining experience for us, including a glass of champagne with our creme brûlée. Filets were perfection. Popovers were exceptional. Terrific selection of wine by the glass or bottle. I chose a glass of Penfolds Cab/Shiraz blend, but I could have selected Caymus by the glass as well. We are looking forward to returning.
Service was top notch, as it always is here. Food was good, but for the price, it should have been excellent.
Compared to other local steakhouses we found this one rather boring. Perhaps they seek out an older clientele base? The steaks were very undercooked and the sides were lackluster to say the least. The Bread that arrives before the food was amazing. Their Lobster Mac & Cheese was beyond bland. Loaded Baked Potato was good and the Asparagus was decent enough however whatever they place on top of it was again bland. The 14oz Bone-In Filets were as stated very undercooked but we aren’t the type to send food back. Jahar I believe his name was, was an excellent server! Quite knowledgeable and eager to provide white glove service. The rest of the staff was very kind as well. Overall the food wasn’t near up to par with some of the other high end competitor locally.

Everyone was wonderful. They knew it was a date night. The bartenders were amazing and very friendly, the greeters were wonderful and the waitress was great. The food was spectacular. Only suggestion I have is to tell everyone that many of the side dishes will accommodate 2 people. Great job Rare. I’ve never had a bad meal or service. Top notch
Dry aged porterhouse was cooked perfectly and beautiful but lacked flavor. Bruschetta, crab cake and wedge salad were all tasty though. Checked it off the list but will not be going back for steak.
