Fantastic Father's Day night out. We will be regulars! Loved it
Awesome food and great ambience!
Rao’s is one of those special places that remain unchanged and aim to serve good old fashioned American-Italian cuisine. Yes it’s a little pricey but find me one place in Los Angeles that serves good Italian food that isn’t. The wait staff is exceptional, attentive, and engaging. I recommend you try it at least once, just be sure to bring your wallet.
We celebrated our anniversary at Rao’s but we love to go anytime. It is always special and always delicious. Everybody is so great there.
Our favorite for authentic Italian. Super friendly staff...great food.
This place is amazing, both the food and the service. You can tell management really cares about their customers.
Excellent Italian in the New York City tradition. Great menu and they aim to please.
Great food. Love old school NY Italian. Hard to find in LA.
Amazing food as always
The Ambience and Service: The service is impeccable and the wait staff/managers are very engaging. Ask them about the history of Rao's and they'd be more than happy to share their stories with you. Once you've been to a Rao's (There are 3 of them), you'll understand why it is so hard to find a reservation at their NYC location.
The noise level was just a tad loud, but you can still hear your conversations.
The Food: The food is just that...amazing. It is not pretentious and is served family style.
We started with the Mushroom Arancini appetizer and it is out of this world.... rich, decadent morsels of mushroom goodness, served with a creamy garlic aioli for dipping.
Their food is served family style and is meant for sharing. It is not a large menu by any means, and there are plenty of choices for any palette. That said, we opted for their Sunday Gravy which is only served Sunday nights, is to die for. You get these large, plump meatballs, homemade mild sausage, bracciole, and short rib, all stewed together slowly in their famous "gravy", which is really their signature tomato sauce. It comes with a generous portion of rigatoni swimming in this gravy. These sell out quickly....they open at 5:00 pm and by 7:00 pm or 7:30pm, they will be sold out.
For dessert, I would opt for the NY style cheesecake.... It's dense and sinfully rich, with just the right amount of berries served alongside. It's a perfect end to a perfect Italian meal.
The food was good but it was so loud that we couldn't have a conversation. Our server was very kind and helpful but it was very hard to hear her.
Great atmosphere, nice choice of pasta, meat, and fish, and wonderful service. Try Uncle Vinny’s Chicken if you like fresh lemon 🍋 in the sauce! The especial treat was the orecchiette with broccoli rabe and sausage - so glad they brought it back! Definitely worth the journey to this tucked away spot in Hollywood!
Always a perfect evening.
Authentic NYC Italian!
Best ITALIAN in Los Angeles!
Mother’s Day couldn’t be better at Rao’s. Love the food, the staff and all the New Yorkers. Feels like home.
We looked forward to trying Rao's in Los Angeles, but sadly we were disappointed by our visit. The noise level was very very high before they turned on the music. The server told us it is better to come during the week. We order appetizers and salads which were just fair. Then three of us shared a pasta and the bone-in veal parmesan. The pear and brown butter flocchi was delicious. The bone in veal parmesan was very overpriced. The only thing the bone was good for was filling the plate because for $50 you don't get a side dish. No pasta, no vegetable, not even a piece of parsley. Just a big bone and a few slices of salty veal. If I return it will be early and during the week.
We went for Sunday Mother's Day Diner and it was amazing. Luckily they have Sunday Gravy on Sunday and words can't describe this meal. 10 STARS ALL THE WAY!
Meat dishes were adequate. Fish was terrible. Over cooked and tasteless. Carbonara Pasta, of all things! Was absolutely the worst I have had in any restaurant in memory. Oily. Over cooked. Luke warm. Very disappointing.
What's not to like? This beloved restaurant is a favorite of ours. Whether we are having a business dinner or hanging out with friends this place is the best! We celebrated a close friends birthday and it was fantastic. Started with a perfectly prepared gin gimlet and several glasses of wine. Gabriel the bartender is friendly and welcoming. I had been about 5 weeks earlier for a business dinner, same table, same excellent service. Favorites not to miss....the meatballs, you must try them. forget the head to discuss...you must order them! Perfectly prepared and seasoned like your Italian grandmother would make them (if we had one:) You cannot miss with these...2 large per order, and you can share. Next, baked clams, perfect as an appetizer and the best way to start your meal. We had to have the Veal scallopini...it's the best I've had, if veal is not your thing, try the chicken, also excellent. We shared two pasta dishes, the traditional rigatoni bolognese and the filled pasta with pears and cheese. We shared a piece of cheesecake for our friends birthday and it was like eating in a small trattoria in Italy. This was a perfect amount of food and we had leftovers which made the weekend even more enjoyable. I like that you can have great service, excellent cocktails and be treated as a valued customer and friend. There are lots of options in Los Angeles but only on Rao's....it's not to be missed and should be embraced on a regular basis...right after you hit the treadmill because you won't want to miss this delicious food!
Took my boyfriend for his birthday!! Service was outstanding! I forgot our waiters name but his service was on point - always checked in on us every 15-20 mins. I believe the owner was there tonight as well; greeting everyone including my boyfriend and I and even went out of his way as to walk by tables making sure everything was good. 10/10!!
I really like this place, I like close by and every time we come in there i feel like I'm at a familiar watering hole. The food is fantastic, the people are very friendly, the tables are comfortable and I'll tell you what it's pricey but worth it.
I will come back for sure!!!
The food was great and the service was amazing! Will be going back for sure.
The food was very good and the service was excellent and Jonny Roast Beef is the best!
This was an outstanding restaurant with Italian food that rivals my Italian grandmothers. The service was outstanding also. Gia sat down and chatted with us and all of the support staff was amazing as well. Making sure we had everything we needed but not being too intrusive. I will be there again the next time I go to Los Angeles.
Dinner at Rao’s is like visiting my Italian great auntie’s house: always welcoming and always a fabulous meal. The meatballs are huge and luscious and a great appetizer before the only entree I ever order: chicken scarpariello. Its balance of piquant and sweet peppers, juicy chicken and hearty sausage usually forces me to order two portions; one for dinner and one to take home.
Rao's is famous for traditional red sauce Italian Comfort food - and nobody does it better
Large portions, especially on Sunday Night, Chief Mikes Gravy could feed 3 or 4 people. Great for a special occasion, fairly expensive.
There were four of us. We all ordered what we wanted. Three of the meals were great. One was just okay. It was a vegetarian pasta and lacked flavor. Not awful, just okay. Still very much enjoyed our evening.
We chose Rao's because of it's reputation and location.
We had an early reservation and we were greeted and seated right away to a nice intimate booth. Ambience was great, but $16.00 for a glass of House Cabernet seemed a bit excessive.
The stuffed mushrooms were pretty much just a mouthful of batter.
We ordered the Sunday Gravy special which included Dinner salad, rigatoni, meatballs, sausage Pork, and Braised Beef. We waited to order after the appetizer and drinks were served, but since it is served family style, that means the salad, pasta and entrees all come out at the same time. So, you are using the same plate for everything. Salad had a tasteless vinaigrette, meat was dry and the sauce was not all that tasty after hearing.
All in all, I think Rao's is riding on their NY reputation.
We won't be returning anytime soon.
Authentic and old school. Great food and atmosphere. Highly recommended.
Excellent restaurant fantastic service and food loved the decor
First time dining at Rao’s, and it won’t be the last. Everything was amazing!!!
Fabulous pasta dishes and the meatballs are amazing!
Fun! We had 8 people, service a little slow & would’ve wished the pricing was more easily split for individuals or the food was served more individually, since the menu is all family style and the check splitting in the end got confusing with everyone sharing different dishes but having their own drinks. But the manager or someone with a NJ/NY accent was clearly working the tables regularly and he made the experience. The food was good, but had some basic items that were headacratchingly off (e.g. aglio olio was literally just pasta & oil...no red pepper, garlic, parm...thankfully we had extra meatball orders to help that out). Rigatoni was good but not special. Steak was great, salads & meatballs were great.
Food is always amazing. Service is great. Best meatballs ive ever eaten.
Snazzy joint and the food will knock your socks off. The wait staff was top shelf it my kinda place. A LA must do
Rao’s was very good. We ate on the patio, which is considerably quieter than the dining room. Everything was great. We both felt the wine by the glass prices were high by all standards- plus a rather short pour. Next time we will order a bottle.
We went to Rao’s for our anniversary dinner while in town from Louisiana. It was a great experience! The meatballs are delicious! It was everything we hoped it would be. Service was fast and friendly. I would recommend this restaurant.
Other than driving from Orange County, we thoroughly enjoyed dinner at Rao's. We will definitely go back. Only complaint was being served starter and salad at the same time and feeling as if we were being rushed to order.
