Rams Hill Ratings and Reviews
Two Thanksgivings ago (NOV 2015), my husband and I and our friend experienced the most glorious Thanksgiving buffet ever: there were various meat options, as well as roasted vegetables of all kinds, salads, a variety of breads, and tempting, mouth-watering dessert offerings. So this year we were looking forward to re-visiting that experience, and, man-oh-man, were we ever disappointed, almost to the point of tears.
Our first disappointment was the fact that there was no "spread" this year, just an a la carte menu option. Our second disappointment was almost everything served on our plates: the turkey was rubbery, we're pretty sure the potatos came out of a box, the stuffing was too salty to eat, and the gravy? Was that gravy? I don't think so. And the pumpkin pie was cold and had a strange glaze on top.
Here's what was good: the salad, the cranberry sauce, the wine, and the service.
Beautiful setting for an evening meal overlooking the desert valley and mountains. Service was excellent but food was disappointing. Roasted chicken was heavily salted (brined) and beef stroganoff was swimming in oil. I will return, but will be more selective about what meal to order.
The food was great but the restaurant had run out of the salmon and "upgraded" me to the higher priced special..The service was ok..a little difficult to understand through a thick accent..The atmosphere was worth the "but" and "ok"and we had a very special dinner together..Thanks!
This was our first visit to Ram's Hill restaurant. We were staying in one of the homes on the property for a 2 day weekend vacation.
Visually, the property is stunning. Everything is so well maintained and expertly manicured.
We made a reservation through OpenTable and that went off without a hitch!
The hostess was expecting us and seated us right away at a table with one of the most beautiful views ever (just a gorgeous view of the desert, the mountains in the distance, &the beautifully maintained golf course) located outside. The temperature was perfect. The waiters rearranged our chairs to maximize the view and WOW was it killer. They took our drink order and zip, we had our drinks. Then in a perfect amount of time they came back and took our food order. Everything was top notch. They were all friendly and welcoming.
The food came out quickly and everything was perfect.
I had almost completed drinking my beer and got up to take a photo of the sunset. When I got back, the waiter had poured ice tea into my beer (the last tiny sip I had). Without saying a word he was back with a brand new full glass of ice cold beer and a huge apology and said the beer was on the house because of the error.
I was stunned. I only had a sip left and didn't expect a thing, but that was excellent service.
The quality of the food was top notch - this place could hold it's own with any 4-5 star restaurant in Beverly Hills - and this is Borrego Springs?
My wife and our 3 boys ate everything on our plates - it was simply fantastic. The portions were good sized as well...about perfect.
Then came dessert. Flourless chocolate cake, salted caramel cheesecake, creme brulee & strawberry shortcake - we had one of each and shared it all...and it was all gone in a flash!
I tell you God does look down upon Borrego and bless it... at least he does at Rams' Hill restaurant.
Now, you will pay for it. It is NOT cheap but it IS a GOOD FAIR VALUE and worth every penny.
On St Patrick's Day at lunch they were out of both of the "house" wines we ordered. No problem as they sold us the more expensive choice(s). Almost seemed fake and no attempt to offer the expensive glass at the same price as the house wine which is what many restaurants would do. Hostess was "busy" talking with staff even though she knew we were waiting to be helped. Nice waiter who was very personable. We will go back but hope they have the wine offering figured out especially on a sinking holiday which also happened to be a Friday.
We were staying in Borrego Springs for the hiking and riot of spring flowers. Since Borrego was packed and we wanted to dine outdoors to enjoy the magnificent weather and desert beauty, RamsHill seemed like a perfect choice. Plus we received a very nice recommendation from one of the rangers at the Visitor Center. The food was superb and so was the view out on the terrace overlooking the silent golf course and the serene mountains in the distance. We ate the shrimp Louie salads which were the best I've eaten in ages! Great selection of vegetables to accompany perfect fresh shrimp and a specially made dressing. We also enjoyed the flatbread w Brie, pesto, and sliced fresh strawberries as an appetizer. Very good wine list and reasonable by the glass prices.
Would have been a five but the service was slow - we could tell they were understaffed. Some of the other diners were very loud - certainly not the restaurants fault. We would definitely go back.
Really a mixed review here. Great views of the Valley and wonderful outdoor seating. Charming, "clubby" atmosphere. Probably best food prep in the Valley. Maybe the only fine dining in Borrego. That having been said, the front of house staff was a mess that day. After having reserved on Opentable, I called noontime to confirm the reservation for 6:45 and for an outside table to accommodate our dog. (Most places in Borrego allow dogs outside.). We arrived a half hour early to watch the sunset, and they did not have the reservation. Staff tried to be nice, and said we could have a drink while we waited. An hour and two wines ( for which we paid ) later we were shown to an inside (Not outside) table. Subsequently, they "found" an outside table among the dozen or so empty outside, and we picked up and moved. At the end of the meal, our waiter said he would comp our two coffees to make up for the fiasco. Really ? Comp the coffees ? Not really compensatory fellas. I wish I didn't have to be so negative about this, but staff can really diminish a dining experience, and this staff did.
The setting is a stunning view of the Borrego Valley and the surrounding landscaping is simply fantastic. The food and wine are the best in the area. Hailie is one of the best servers we have ever experienced anywhere. Be sure to reserve through Open Table. Otherwise, if it's a busy night you might not make it past the resort's guard gate without a reservation.
This was our first trip to Ram's Hill and we were overall pleased and will go back. The servers are excellent and the sunset view of the desert valley is amazing. The food was very good over all (particularly the Gnome Salad), but one of our entrees was not hot. The kitchen problem was due to an unexpected influx of tourists to Borrago Springs because of the spectularly big bloom of desert flowers, coupled with a shortage of staff that evening (which they assured would be fixed). The restaurant was simply overwhelmed. While the restaurant fell short of a four or five star overall rating this evening, we are willing to give them a second chance. Because of the crowds this year, if we did not already have a reservation, we would not have made it past the entrance gate of the resort. So book ahead of time! We will be eating there again tomorrow night and will provide a further review.
The hostess was less than friendly, didn't welcome us,seemed like we were bothering her....not a good front line person. However once in and seated our waiter was great, service was a little slow but is didn't matter as we were sitting outside enjoying the views. Food was good, we never felt rushed or "over-served".
Fantastic views, we watched the full moon rise out of the Salton Sea and over the mountain, just stunning.
We went to Borrego Springs during the busiest time of year - wildflowers - and Rams Hill was the only restaurant on Opentable.
Restaurant is located in the golf club, so there were lots of drunk golfers milling about.
Service was excruciatingly slow. There seemed to be only one server for the entire place, including a large patio.
Just the two of us and we were there for over 2 hours. Gnome salad was fantastic but beef stroganoff was chewy.
I doubt we'll go back - maybe on a slow weekend 😩
First time there. I'd heard the food was the best in Borrego....and that proved to be the case!
Ahi poke appetizer, caesar salad, and a prime new york. Our waitress was very friendly and experienced...with great suggestions. Outside seating was excellent. I will return....
(and they make a great martini!)
Everything from service to food to ambience was on point. Alex, our server was on top of it the full two hours we were there havings apps drinks and entrees. View is incredible. We came back next day for breakfast and chef came out to offer blankets on patio and introduce himself. What a touch. Must try the homeade granola for breakfast!!! We will be back soon.
