Where do I begin?
This place is the most overpriced diner you’ve ever been to. And the reason I say diner rather than restaurant is because that’s the vibe. It feels like you’re sitting in a diner.
When we arrived, there was no one at the hostess stand and we were not greeted or even acknowledged upon arrival, even though we had a reservation. We waited and waited… and when we were finally seated, our table had just been wiped off and still had standing water residue and our place-settings were not set. Moreover the wet table caused water to seep onto our paper menus. When we asked for place settings, we received one placesetting that had no fork.
With respect to the waitstaff, get ready to be upsold. Every recommendation that was made… and there were only two ... were the most expensive entrée and the most expensive bottle of wine on the menu. A total turn off. It seemed obvious that the waitress was interested only in maximizing her tip.
We were so hesitant based on on our initial experience when we arrived, that we told the waitress that we were going to wait to see about the quality of our cocktails before we decided whether or not we were going to stay for dinner. We strongly considered over a period of 20 minutes going someplace else for dinner; and in hindsight, we probably should have.
I must say, however, that the raspberry lemon drop martini that we ordered from the bar was fantastic. And the food was actually quite good. In addition, the interior design of the restaurant is well ordered and quite interesting… In terms of artwork, color and texture. Unfortunately all of the other aspects of the dining experience overshadow the venue itself.
It’s a shame that a chef with such promise is working in an environment that is less than desirable to those looking for a fine dining experience.
Worst experience ever in a restaurant wasted my Valentine’s Day
The service was terrible, and the quality of the food was definitely not worth the price. However, our waitress (who wasn’t even a waitress, she was a hostess who had wait on us because no one else would) noticed that we were not happy and comped our entire check. Which we were very grateful for. Overall, not the best experience. The managers need to fix something because this restaurant is not cutting it.
World-class food, service was great if a bit smothering, and every menu item could stand to be $5-10 cheaper.
Worst place not professional will not go back
This was suppose to be a night to celebrate New Year, but didn't go as planned.
When we walked in all we can smell was sewage, the atmosphere was boring and not celebratory at all ( there was not even one single balloon blown up to indicate any kind of New Year celebration). Our table was not set up and my husband basically had to step in and assist putting tables together for a party of 6.
Once we set down, waitress took a while to bring the menus. When asking questions in regards to the set menu she didn't seem to be knowledgeable at all and kept saying she will have to ask or find out... couldn't give us a definite answer on anything we asked. Finally, we ordered two bottles of wine and ..... never got them. After waiting for about 20 + minutes just to get our wine we decided to walk across the street to Pappas Bros across the street.
To sum it up, the restaurant and roof top bar can have so much potential with the right management. Not sure who runs this place but they are not doing a good job. Personnel seemed not knowledgeable and place lacked character/atmosphere.
P.S. When someone called to confirm our reservation the night before, I asked if there was a set menu and that person told me that there was not a set menu. Upon arrival we learned there Is only a set menu. Just goes to show lack of management and well trained staff.
We happened to be only one of two tables the evening we dined and our service was excellent. Kiera(so) took excellent care of us. The food was great! Nice twists on some southern/Louisiana classics. I had the wedge salad thinking I wasn’t that hungry and this would be something small and relatively plain. NOT! It was large and extremely tasty! Loved the experience and will definitely be back.
The restaurant was a ghost town on Friday night, never a good sign. We ordered martinis as soon as our waitress greeted us. She came back to take our appetizer order and we still hadn't received drinks. Our appetizers arrived, the oyster caesar salad and gumbo were pretty good...still no drinks. One martini arrived 25 minutes later, with a fruit fly in it. The entrees were mediocre at best but the kitchen obviously doesn't check the quality before sending a dish out to the table. The ribeye was not cooked to the ordered temperature and the au gratin potatoes were still raw. Our waitress was friendly but untrained, bartender had no right to be serving drinks with her lack of efficiency and training. There is an obvious lack of management at Zutro and we will never return or recommend.
So disappointed. Many parties in the hotel resulted in short staff. Loud bar turning into fight, customers leaving by droves. Very slow to get a drink and then told they don’t have ingredients for one of their 8 only cocktails. Disappointing food too. We told our apologetic waitress but she was helpless as the rest of the staff.
Zutro crew was very attentive during the restaurant dining and every need was met for breakfast. The wonderful staff even helped the busy valet team out.

Staff was outstanding, food was Tasty but not for its cost but presentation was good. The ambiance was not as expected for high priced food. The drinks were excellent. Both bartender and waitress made us feel so welcomed.
Food preparation and taste was excellent! Waitstaff was attentive, but support staff seemed a little overwhelmed. Pleasant experience, though. Mixed drinks were perfect.

I had seen images of the rooftop bar for some time now and finally decided to check it out without looking at the reviews prior. We were waiting for the hostess for over 5 minutes- no one at the hostess stand. The bartender had to find someone to seat us. Once sat we were given menus and no waiter ever came to greet us or ask for an order. After over 15 minutes of waiting, I had to wave over a waiter. Off the bat he had a bad attitude and was rude. He blankly stared at us as if he was interrupted. I asked for him to take our order and he scoffed. Once our food was brought out we were never checked on. Both steaks were undercooked and the overall dish was seasoned terribly. I had to flag the same waiter down for more water and the check. When he poured the water he splashed it all over the food and just walked away. The bill came out to be over $90 for terrible food and service. I spoke with the waiter and informed him of all his bad service and he didn’t even seem bothered nor apologized. After asking for the manager, he stated they didn’t have one. Behind our booth was a dinner party of 20+ that all decided to walk out without paying as no one could check them out or take their orders. Another dinner party kept having to walk to the kitchen to get service as no one would come to their table. Five different couples waited at the hostess stand and left after not being helpedDONT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!
Great for a mid week happy hour. Weekends it is the place to "BE" before House of blues

Great smoked brisket with baked lentils. I was Leary to try in the middle of Houston when my smoked briskets usually found in dodgy places, nice size plate and powerful smoke flavor. Great cut of meat. The lentil, i wasn’t going to eat until i thought i would try,... fantastic. I finished it all off. Nice price and very nice server. Ill be back for more.
The food was good but small portions for the price. The service was okay. We had to ask for water refill a couple of times. Could be better considering the restaurant was not too busy.
The waiter, Arthur, had great suggestions and the Burnt Ends appetizer was amazing! Definitely going back.

I was very disappointed about the food. I had the brisket and the next morning, I woke up with a good poisoning.
Food was ok. Not spectacular but just as expected. Had to wait a few minutes to be seated as there was no host. Other than that I would return.
Unfortunately, I made the mistake of sitting in the dining area facing the TV in the bar, as my waiter asked me to move to the bar area, despite the fact that only 4 other people were in the restaurant at the time.

Except for the empanadas the food was great. The empanadas were so spicy hot our friend who ordered it couldn’t eat it. She likes spicy food but said they were intolerably hot. Everything else was great!
Zutros is an excellent restaurant and bar for date night. The food and ambiance was 5 star and the noise level is low so you can easily converse with others at the table. I ordered a fried oyster caesar salad.
The oysters were cooked lightly and had lots of flavor. The Zutros bar on the 23rd floor rooftop has a phenomenal view of downtown and is an excellent place to have wine or beer with friends or your spouse. It also lacks the traffic noise of street level outdoor bars. Plenty of nearby parking especially evenings. Check out both the rooftop bar and restaurant in the same evening. You'll be glad you did.
There wasn't anything wrong technically, just slightly underwhelming. We ordered the daily special lunch. I had the gumbo which was a bit salty. The cuban was good, but a little dry. Service was slow for it not being very busy. One of the servers had a very dirty vest.
We absolutely love this restaurant. Wonderful food! We also love the look of the restaurant. Modern and beautiful.
I had the special, which was catfish courtboullion, and it was outstanding! The fried quail legs were the best my husband has ever tasted. Summer squash small plate was unique and very tasty. My husband had the turtle soup, which was extraordinary. We will definitely be back.

Suggestion: Have crackers or crunchy bread accompany the gumbo and wedge salad.

I took my husband here for his birthday. Neither of us had ever he ever been. We loved the food, the service, the ambiance and the overall experience. We can’t wait to return.
