We had gotten such great recommendations for WAR.
It started with parking. Unless you pay $5 to valet, it's up to you to find street parking which wasn't easy to find.
Then, they weren't quite ready to seat us when the restaurant opened at 5:00.
The restaurant was ice cold. Uncomfortable and food got cold very quickly.
The wine pour was ridiculously small. The menu is eclectic, hard to order from. Selections are minimal. That's probably part of their way to market their uniqueness.
It was expensive for the offerings. And the liquor!
Not a good dining atmosphere to feel comfortable. Couldn't wait to get out.
Will not be returning. Our expectations were sorely thwarted.
Oh, and a guy in jeans, tee shirt and ballcap who looked like he just came from working in the field was working the counter and apparently
reviewing the plated food before being served. Way out of place.
Our waitress was great and very attentive.
I'd never heard of the place but I'm new to St. George so I'm not surprised. A friend here knows that my wife and I are really into taste, smell, and experience and he loves this place and urged us to try it. We don't eat out very often at all and we prefer to make gourmet food at home.
I've eaten some miraculous meals in my life and it's been a while but I have to say that this place is top notch. We ordered all kinds of dishes and just shared everything and all of the dishes were fabulous. We shared the bone-in ribeye and I hesitated because it was $50 a' la carte' but the thing was huge and gave us 4 meals. It was charred to perfection yet still rare/medium rare on the inside. The buttermilk biscuits were the best I've ever eaten.
Not sure about their wine list because I brought my own bottle to make sure I had the right one for the meal. The cork fee was reasonable. The thing I appreciated the most was the open feel. You can watch the chefs cook and the decor in modern and beautiful. The vibe was very inviting. We will go back sometime for sure.
Loud! But the biggest problem is they need more waiters and ones that are more attentive to their customers! This is the 3rd time we have eaten there and the other two times were wonderful but this time not too much....
Amazing food and beautiful location!
We ate here twice over a week as a consequence of traveling there and back. This is a very good restaurant for St George with some very creative cooking. We also staying the night in the Advenir Hotel, in which the restaurant is located. Fabulous, 5-star accommodations at a 3-star price.
I liked the restaurant. The atmosphere was nice. We were disappointed in the wine offerings. We were told they were out of most wines offered by the glass. The main dishes were OK. They were a little too fancy for my taste. I'm not sure St. George will truly accept this concept considering it's demographic. WAR may be better suited catering to the out of town guests more rather than on the locals like me.
This is a fabulous restaurant! Beautiful atmosphere, staff was terrific, and the food was outstanding. We are so glad that we stumbled across the reviews and decided to give it a try. We will definitely be back next time we are in St George!
Our food and service were good. We found it odd that our check was dropped while we were eating dessert. Our waitress was nice and professional during the entire dinner but that final episode was strange
Started with a few small plates: pork belly and watermelon ( good with some sambal spice but only two small blocks of the belly); house made bread with butter and jam (good, but the berries in the jam did not break down all the way, this left them the size of raisins with a harder texture, removing these would make the jam much better); baked Brie (served with blueberries, mustard seeds, salami jam and toast points- this dish was terrific); and pork rinds (honey and chili powder drizzle -also very enjoyable.
For an entree we had steak frites. Well cooked, but sinewy in places served with a chimichuri sauce and house made katsup and steak sauce. Very nice, and the fries were good (but I should have ordered them crispy).
For wine we chose a Domaine Drouhin Macon Villages Chardonnay which put up quite a fight to not be opened, but the server eventually prevailed.
All in all, for the area, quite impressed and we see ourselves returning on the regular.
Yet to be disappointed about any of their menu items, and I'm pretty sure I've had all of them at this point. They fly in oysters out of BC that are the best I've ever had.
Amazing dining experience in St. George. Will highly recommend to all of our friends.
WAR is St. George’s only gourmet restaurant and it is doing a wonderful job since its opening a few months ago. It specializes in small plates, like octopus tentacles, pork belly with compressed watermelon and three sauces, and the like. Every dish we tried was delicious and unusual. Even the biscuits are wonderful. Deserts are also great, especially the bread pudding. Service is pleasant and professional and the decor is beautiful, especially for the area.
Best meal I’ve ever had. Truly exceptional all around . Beautiful restaurant, excellent service, fabulous menu, delicious meal from drinks to appetizers to desserts to on point pricing. This is the absolute best restaurant in St. George.
Very fresh, very tasty food. Excellent flavors, nice presentation. Service was top-notch. Tables well-spaced, conversation was easy. Wonderful addition to local food scene.
Finally a real restaurant in St. George! We have been travelling there from SLC for years and have been complaining about the lack of decent restaurants in the area the whole time. There are a few decent places, but it is very hard to find a place that has a decent selection of wines, plus innovative food. Thank you Wood Ash Rye for filling both of those needs.
We really enjoyed our meal, the ambiance was great. Our server was clueless about alcohol, but she found someone (from the bar) who was great. We stuck with small plates and loved everything we had except the lamb. The BBQ shrimp was a standout - fantastic. We will definitely be back!
Just to try. Meal was expense. The menu was confusing. Didn’t like how the meal worked. A set meal with sides at a set price would work better.
The couple we went with just wanted a plain steak... did not like all the sauces.
Lots of St George cheap people won’t pay your prices.
I will come again to try lunch or breakfast....
We had several small plates. All were delicious. The filet was on point. Cocktails were great.
What a refreshing change for St George! Finally a restaurant that is creative, focused on quality and can feel like an adult with its delicious craft cocktails!!
Love Sego in Kanab so had a sense of what could be. Thank You for taking a chance with St George
Food was superior, we had a small issue with an entree but it was handle exceptionally well. We attend to return soon! This town needs a fine dining experience and this is it!
Beautiful ambiance with a wonderful, innovative menu.
Wow, finally a good quality restaurant in st George that isn’t a chain! Everything is homemade and the BYU’s cutis are a must! We also loved our server Carrie
All in all we enjoyed the dining experience. It didn’t however, compare to our experience at Sego, which was exceptional in all ways. The tables for two are much to small for all of the dishes. The lighting seemed a bit too bright. The oysters were incredibly tiny. Food was very good, but by no means exceptional. The potential is clearly there...hopefully in time it will improve.
This new restaurant has a lot of potential, but isn’t quite there yet. The food was excellent - we enjoyed a duck entree and also an excellent rib eye. Food was excellently prepared with great flavor and texture. We ordered a mozzarella salad; however it was not served until we were nearly finished with our entrees - not sure if this was a server issue or a kitchen issue. Desert was very good.
Service was ok considering that this is a new restaurant. Our server was friendly and helpful but appeared to be somewhat inexperienced. We ordered a bottle of wine from a very limited wine list with nothing outstanding to select from. Our server poured the first glass and then never returned to refill our glasses.
The restaurant’s design is modern although the excessive amount of hard surfaces from concrete floors to wooden columns to marble topped tables and wooden chairs makes conversation difficult - definitely the sound level is excessive.
My wife and I are in St George frequently on business and have found only two or three restaurants that could remotely be considered fine dining, so we are hopeful that this new restaurant will evolve as St George needs good restaurants. We’ll give it six months and try the restaurant once more.
This was our second visit went in Feb and again this
September. The food choice much better first visit. Waitress still couldn’t get our ice request together. Just a glass but took 3 requests and first visit we just gave up. The pasta sat in the window so 2 orders very dry. Bread still great. Atmosphere is very pleasant. May or not try again. Not much to eat if you do t eat meat.
The best restaurant in St. George. Hands down. Unique, great atmosphere, great food.
Carrie was our server, she was GREAT! Food was delicious. Atmosphere was lively. Awesome place for a date-night!
It’s great. Lots of thought goes into each dish and the flavors...so many flavors. So good. The biscuits are to die for. Give it a try.
Everything was wonderful, except we froze while eating. We asked our waiter if anything could be done, no.
Our food was wonderful. The Turkey soup has good flavor. It could’ve used more rice and been served hot instead of warm. Biscuits were out of this world. The shared salad was great and the mashed potatoes-awesome!!!
We can’t wait to return. Just might want to bring a jacket.
The ambiance was nice. Services could have been a bit better, as far as professionalisms, the way the hotel present itself I guess I expected more from my server. Food was on point matched the hotel experience. Definitely exactly what Saint George needed. I would like to return and try other menu selections.
The food was amazing. We had the turkey plate and the special which was mahi mahi, both were amazing. We also got the chicken skins which I highly recommend! Not something I would normally get but I’m so glad we did. For dessert we had the cheesecake which was perfect! We will be coming back. Also everyone there was very friendly, our waitress was awesome and everyone seemed knowledgeable and helpful!
But, it probably had more to do with our tastes then anything. Every thing was alicart and a bit pricey for what you received.
This is a new restaurant that is working out the kinks. The food was very good. The restaurant was beautifully decorated and unique. The concern we had was the service. We ordered salads in addition to our entree's. All the sides are separate and my husband ordered fries. The salads and fries came out at the same and then the steak came out 5 minutes later. When we asked the waitress why all the food came out like that and she said they deliver the food as soon as it is ready, so the timing was really off and did not allow for us to enjoy the salads before we received the entree's. Also, they sat us at a very small table and delivered all this food at one time so it was super crowded. There was only one other couple in the restaurant at the whole time we were there, so they could have put at another table. Overall, I would recommend, but the service is a work in progress.
Amazing. Do yourself a favor and go.
Very nice dining room with fun ambience. The biscuits were very good. We ordered the filet with salad and potatoes. The filet was plated with too much oil and sauce. It expensive for the food, but the atmosphere made up for it.
My daughter and I came for lunch on a Sunday. As expected, it was very quiet and the waiter was attentive. The lunch menu had several small sharing plates and a few main courses. We decided to just do the small plates for fun. They were all good, but nothing that really blew me away. The one must have is the biscuits. Yep, worth coming back for. Dinner next time.
The restaurant is beautifully decorated and very comfortable. Our server, Joy was very helpful. All our dishes were prepared wonderfully, even taking into consideration some food allergies. we will absolutely go back and enjoy a date night dinner.
Fantastic food and ambience! This will become one of my regular spots.
Beautiful restaurant and I can’t say enough about the customer service. So friendly, appropriate, helpful, and accommodating. Dustin was our server and he kept us laughing at each encounter. We welcomed that but I’m certain he would adjust if guests didn’t wish to engage. The food was different but enjoyable. I had the BBQ Pork Belly dish on spicy (picante) watermelon. I’m glad I tried it but probably won’t next time because of personal taste and I’d rather try something new. My guest had the mushroom pasta dish and it was lovely with subtle herbs. The biscuits are wonderful. I am anxious to try all the dishes on the menu. If you want an pleasant experience along with non traditional dining, make a reservation!
Food was great. Loved the “sharing” menu. Caitlin was was attentive and friendly.
