First off, our babysitter was 45 minutes early so we we arrived nearly an hour before our reservation. We let the hostess know and went to the wine bar to wait. There we met the chef and co-founder and we had a great conversation with the bartenders.
The hostess came over and we were seated 30 minutes early, greeted by name and were wished happy anniversary followed by custom menus. We chose the 5 course paring menu and went for a culinary joy ride. The food was AMAZING and the parings were impeccable.
Service = 10+
Overall experience = 10++
Thank you for making our night special!!!
We took some out of town friends to their first encounter with Wink. My wife and I have been going to Wink since the first night they opened. The food was extraordinary as always. The wine list is superb with lots of testing at their "Wink Wine Bar" next door. Come early for your reservation and have wine in the bar. And, most of all, save room for the dessert sampler.
Debra is the best, and she has been at wink for many years. She has excellent recommendations for the meal.
Everything was excellent, we ordered the Hamachi crudo, scallops, sea bass and grouper. Very fresh. Service was great as well.
Dessert of El Rey Chocolate cake excellent too with cup of coffee!
We will return!
Wonderful experience at Wink. Amazingly prepared food with locally sourced ingredients, top notch service. The staff, environment, and quality of this place was just great.
Excellent and I felt special for my birthday with my name on the menu and signed by chef and staff
Really interesting food and excellent wine
We had a fabulous five course tasting menu. The staff was super nice.
Wonderful food and service. You can't go wrong with Wink.
We found the food well prepared but the portions were absurdly small for the tasting menu. We left hungry after spending $70 pp on the 5 course tasting menu. The dining room is very loud and the furnishings in need of a rehaul. The place is highly overrated.
Food and service were top notch! Wine bar was a great place for a quiet drink.
With all of the changes and new-ness in Austin, WINK is that old, reliable friend that never disappoints. Great wine, awesome service, & best scallops in town.
We had a wonderful meal. The hostess was incredible and the food really good. I would love to go back during my next trip to Austin!
My husband and I ordered the 5-course tasting menu with pairings. The tastes flowed perfectly one course to the next, and the wine pairings were spot on! We tend to stay away from rolls on the side, but these were too good to resist - worth the gluten!
My husband took me to Wink on request based on a local resident's list published in a conference's suggested restaurants to belatedly celebrate my birthday. Aside from being hidden away and taking some time to find, we were completely unimpressed by this "local gem". More like "local costume jewelry".
The preciousness of the whole package - food descriptions; hushed reverence for the food and ambiance (in a strip mall , COME ON); the absurdly small portion sizes and "meh" quality food - was completely off-putting.
We skipped the "tasting menu" since a variety of the items did not appeal to both of us - instead, we both got a $16 salad that featured a blackberry emulsion as a dressing (weak and lacked substance), then I had a 4 oz piece of halibut with braised leaks and Brussel sprouts and some sauce that was similar to aioli but with broken egg in it - underwhelming at best. The brussel sprouts were wildly undercooked - apparently this is either some new terrible food trend, or else the kitchen doesn't understand that a few minutes in a saute pan doesn't cook anything but the outside leaves. My husband received 3 sea scallops as his dinner entree, with a smear of sauce, for $34. He said they were good but nothing to justify the cost or lack of any accompaniment.
Needless to say, we skipped dessert. What a disappointment.
My wife started with mussels; delicious, as usual at Wink. I had an overdressed butter-lettuce salad. We both had beef sirloin, which was okay but nothing to write home about -- no grilled flavor. Our desserts were Wink's stand-bys: Wink trio and El Ray chocolate cake. Wink's desserts are good, but only one item (chocolate soup) is a cut above ordinary. Our waiter -- a relative newbie -- was one of those who exclaims "excellent" for every item you order. But don't get me wrong, Wink's a great restaurant, and the performance is usually a lot better than it was on this occasion.
Our first time at Wink won't be the last! Fernando and staff were amazing! Fernando made us feel like we were family! Food was excellent! Staff, again, was awesome!
Amazing food and service!
Lovely meal with excellent service. Dessert to die for. Too expensive for anything other than a special occasion.
Tucked away on one of Austin's many scattered strip malls, this hidden gem is a real find! We discovered Wink when friends took us there for a wonderful three-course meal, and we have been back recently to try the tasting menu.
Wink's very talented and creative chef surprised us with seven well-balanced but adventurous dishes, varying from delicious seared scallops to some amazing tile fish with a grapefruit-oregano vinaigrette, very delicate, very yummy. The wines were equally well-chosen, especially when we arrived at the reds with our delicious beef tartare (a Beaujolais, perhaps one degree on the warm side), some excellent duck breast with red beet (my favourite wine of the evening: an energising, unapologetic pinot noir), and - the chef's creative piece de resistance - red deer with lentils and, yes, banana (drinking wine is a blood sport. This full-bodied malbec knocked me out).
We went to Wink to celebrate my husband's birthday. The food, the service, the attention to detail; everything was superbly executed. On one hand, Wink's location is part of its charm - you really have to know the place to find it - but on the other hand, I feel a place of this quality deserves a location with a bit more visibility.
Last summer we dined at Wink. My wife, a vegan, had the five course vegan meal. I ate portions of hers and had my favorite sweetbreads as a later course. Our server that night was fantastic in working with us and we had a leisurely dinner lasting over two hours. We came back this week to do the same thing. Our server said it would not work for me to share her five course dinner, that the portions would be too small and I would just be watching her eat. I ordered a salad, and when the vegan courses came, they were miniscule, and very tasteless, under cooked and just not very good. My sweetbreads were undercooked and also a very small helping. They rushed the servings. We finished a five course meal in less than an hour, not what we wanted for a special evening. And the noise was soooo loud we could not hear each other. Very disappointing and we will not be back.
We ordered a pescatarian and a vegetarian 5 course tasting with the wine pairings. Brian (?) was a wonderful server and very knowledgeable about the food and wine. We were running late and they were very accommodating
This is a clear case of overpromising and under-delivering. Both myself and my partner are vegetarian, so we selected Wink for it's vegetarian-friendly menu.
Sure, it is vegetarian, but it's also overpriced, bland, and entirely uninteresting. There's also a massive air of pretension, but without any actual substance to back it up. While the restaurant is quiet, that quiet feels more oppressive than anything else. Mostly, that's due to the haughty, arch-arrogant service staff.
Not going back anytime soon.
Food is outstanding. We had 5 course vegetarian tasting and it was just delicious. Service is warm and professional. Loved this restaurant and will be back.
This is my second time and for the most part the food was pretty great. The last two courses of the 7 course tasting menu weren’t prepared as well as they should have been. The duck was salty (I am sure the staff knows who I am now!) and the venison was over cooked. I have a culinary degree, work in the industry and travel all over to eat fine food. Austin is full of beautiful menus to choose from but I came back because my first experience was so amazing. I won’t go back because the service wasn’t great and when I mentioned the duck being salty the service got worse and my guest over heard the staff having a laugh over it. When I am dropping a few hundred on food and wine I guess I just hope for a better performance.
We opted for a'la'carte meals, each had a starter, main and dessert - all the food was delicious. However, the portions are super tiny, so expect to leave hungry. Server was nice, but very slow service. We were in the restaurant for about 1hour 45mins. Very pricey, so I recommend for a special occasion, and make sure you fill up on the free bread! On another note: Despite me telling them it was my 40th birthday celebration, and 4 other tables having candles in the desserts, our server didn't even acknowledge it was a special occasion for us.
Wink was delicious! First of all, they were super accomodating. It was my friend's birthday, and they printed "happy birthday leah" right at the top of her menu and gave her a signed copy to take home. We did the 7 course tasting menu, and they were able to adjust on-the-spot any food that didn't meet her dietary restrictions. So a few times, I got the menu item and she received an adjustment. Plus, the food itself was delicious. If you are looking for an accommodating farm-to-table restaurant, this is one to consider.
The dining area we were in was small but nice. It was early so not very busy or loud. Service was excellent, and the food was great.
It was a very strange experience. The duck and steak that my wife and I ordered were room temperature while the vegetables on the same plate were hot. They took it back and over cooked the same meat that we originally had, and put it back on a different plate. So we sent it back again and it was too far from being corrected. I would never recommend going to this restaurant.
Wonderful for tasting menu w/ paring. Exceptional food, wine and service. The only thing I would change is the noise level. Can be very noisy and could use more baffling on ceiling and walls or accoustic modification on flooring.
Fantastic service! The tasting menu was amazing!
Our visit each time is wonderful!!! This was for my daughter’s birthday. I love that you print the name of the birthday girl on the menu and have the staff sign the menu. That is a very special touch.
We tried three restaurants in Austin as tourists and liked Wink best. Why? Food preparation and presentation excellent; quiet atmosphere; great service. Compare to Red Ash and L’Oca D’oro. These are good restaurants but very noisy.
We came here for a Birthday / Date Dinner and I can say this was a great choice, highly recommended to anyone looking for a great meal and atmosphere.
We opted for the 7 course tasting menu with wine pairings. Although the food was excellent, the wine pairings were disappointing. I should have ordered a bottle off the list as I felt they skimped on the quality. Also, they pack the diners in too tightly and was closer to the party next to me than my date across the table from me. The staff was very friendly and attentive. I would not go back though...too many better alternatives for alot less money.
Anniversary dinner and everything was amazing. Great service and food was above all expectations
A lot of fancy words to describe menu items. Appetizer size entrees. Hard to find restaurant. Coffee and water were great. We went out of curiosity. Don’t eat here. You will regret it.
The tasting menu did not disappoint.
Great seven course meal with wine pairing. We truly enjoyed all the dishes, and the pairings were perfect. Service was exceptional. Definitely recommended for a romantic night out on the town. Make sure to stop at their wine bar next door before or after your meal!
To be fair the first time I ate there was fantastic... enough to trust it for a Valentine’s Day dinner... not up to par, rushed , rude waitress, menu was very one dimensional, mediocre, bread was good wine pours were generous... so the stuff they didn’t make were the best parts
Awesome experience, wine pairing meal was amazing and great dining experience
