Food has been better in prior visits, so was somewhat disappointed this time around. Was also slightly disappointed with the lack of mask from our waiter when seating us and first few visits to the table, then just an ineffectual lip shield for subsequent visits. I didn't leave because of it but it does discourage me from coming back soon.
Good food, great atmosphere and always has cool menu.
Fantastic in every way! Looking forward to bringing more family and friends!
Such a wonderful dinner and the service was wonderful too! We loved all of the dishes we tried and the lamb with pomegranate sauce was amazing! We will definitely be back again!
We ordered the Chilean sea bass, scallops and grits as our main course, mushroom in foil as the side and octopus was our appetizer. Overall everything was very good, a bit of a different flair that was a little rich with the sauces they incorporated however we enjoyed our meal along with the nice ambiance and setting. Service was satisfactory.
The Good: The seating was great, overlooking the street, the weather was beautiful. I liked the transparent masks, although reminded me a little of what dentists wear. My steak was very good, cooked the way I ordered and not overly salted. Flavors of the rest was good.
The Not so Good: I was dining with my 18 year old daughter. The server nearly completely ignored her. He took my drink order (a glass of wine) and left. We ordered my daughter's drink from the bus boy. When the server realized his mistake he apologized to me, something like "oops, I forgot to take her order," but not to her. We explained she is vegan and he recommended the carrot tacos with no cheese - good suggestion but cheese came with it. She ate it anyway. He asked how things were - again, just to me and didn't look at her at all. Half way through my meal, I could have used another glass of wine, but he never asked. It took way too long to bring our check. He didn't seem overly busy - he was definitely spending time at other tables. It was weird.
Everything was really great and I recommend this restaurant to everyone!
Sat outside on the patio. Service was horrible, had to ask multiple times for the wait staff to take care of us. I wouldn't go back.
The restaurant was empty, that should have given us a clue. The waitress was pleasant and welcoming. When I asked her what her favorite thing on the menu was she informed us it was her second day on the job— second clue. The host then informed us we were going to have the best meal of our lives. Well, we ordered the Spanish octopus appetizer that was so tough and tasteless, it was almost funny after the host comment. My husband ordered the fish special which he believes the fish was frozen not fresh and really couldn’t determine what the other food was on his plate. I ordered the lamb ragu which has no flavor other than the salt that it was covered in. I’m sorry I know restaurants are struggling during COVID but this was so bad, I had to let other people know.
Staff super nice but service was slightly slow based on number of guest. Had the chicken and my husband the steak - was a bit dry. Cheese board and burrata were great!
Must have changed owners recently because it’s just not the same as it used to be.
Interesting menu. Delicious flavors, a very fun and relaxing dining experience. Will definitely return!
Great creative cuisine and good variety on the menu for all tastes and restrictions
I think this restaurant has potential but the food is poor at best. We ordered the bread and butter as an appetizer for $7.00 and it should have been included in the meal. We thought there was something special about the bread and butter, but it was just bread with butter.
The short ribs seemed like my home crock pot dinner, nothing special. We also had the 90 day burger. It was decent but would have expected more from a restaurant like this.
For desert we ordered the butter cake. The cake looked like someone smashed it together and put it on a plate. They also added a small portion of ice cream, very small portion.
Not sure where all the 4 star reviews came from but all in all not a restaurant we would return to.
Seems like they are trying to make as much money as they can by cutting as many corners as they can.
My husband and I love this restaurant, We can always count on finding something unique and delicious here. Their grilled peach burrata and carrot tacos were amazing!
Great service. Innovative menu. The burger was surprisingly delicious!
I dined there recently with my girlfriend and friends. It was a somewhat early dinner. The ambiance was wonderful. The waiter was attentive. And the food was excellent. My girlfriend had the braised short ribs and I had the fish special. The short ribs were tender and tasty, and my fish was prepared perfectly. I highly recommend Whitestone.
Excellent food, service and ambience!
Quality of food was good, portion size was small for the price point.
Amazing as always.
By far the best restaurant in Dana Point and one of the best in all of the OC. Innovative and fresh with outstanding service.
Friday, July 17, 2020, 5:30 pm. My husband and I will never eat at Whitestone in Dana Point again. The food was very good, our waiter was also very good. The restaurant manager made his rounds to every table multiple times to check on patrons with friendly welcoming conversation. We were seated on the patio in a central location. The restaurant manager headed toward our table after speaking to the two people in the table closest to us, looked at my Asian husband, walked the other way and avoided us completely. This is a common form of overt racism. Ignore people to let them know you don’t want their business. He accomplished his goal. We let this manger know we didn’t appreciate his treatment of us as we left. He made excuses for his behavior.
Manager was great. Quick service Great meal. Great ambiance.
Could be better - food and value. Think the menu needs re-working. Thank you.
Family visiting from Nor Cal
The meal was tasty, service amazing, restaurant nice however the food was pretentious expensive and odd. Sourdough bread for $10 came out brown and tasted like wheat bread. This butter cake looked like someone had smashed it on a window. The entree was good the rest was strange and too over the top.
The service was less than we have experienced in the past. We had to ask to have the music turned down on numerous times. The lighting was dark and it took several requests to have it brightened.
Our order was not correct and when it was delivered, the creole shrimp smelled like chlorine bleach and both of us ended up being sick that evening.
We have enjoyed Whitestone many times but this experience will be our last visit to Whitestone.
The food was incredible, staff was very friendly and the space was beautiful. Our new favorite restaurant! Also, the kicker is that the drinks taste very natural. The syrups are made in house so they don’t taste overly sweet but have a healthier flavor.
Food was really good. Ambience was great. Service was good but took a long time to get our food and we were one of only 3 tables there.
The food is outstanding and inventive. A surprise test in Dana Point! Upscale and chic crowd.
Made reservations and got in on a Friday at 6:30. Everyone was friendly and attentive. The place has a contemporary, comfortable feel with indoor and patio dining...unfortunately the view is of highway 1 and the traffic. We had cocktails, appetizers and dinner and everything was great! The food has a unique twist to traditional favorites and we found each dish to be amazing!
A restaurant that doesn’t allow substitutions of the accompaniments on the entree is not for us. This place offered no vegetables instead of potatoes which is a food we prefer not to eat. Nor did they have a simple salad. A Caesar was on the menu which we ordered. It was covered in a thick layer of Parmesan which was far too heavy for a first course. The menu was limited in choices of entrees and sides. We won’t return.
Yes, love the restaurant and menu! Enjoy bringing friends someplace new and fun! Like seeing the Chef come out to the table to chat with guests. Hope to be there more often these months to come of spring/summer. Love the patio area and fireplace but would like to see the tables and chairs more upgraded to enhance the outdoor fee and special menul. Maybe table cloths on table or more substantial furniture. The table setting feels a bit plain.
The ambiance is warm and inviting. The menu is creative and unusual. And the food tastes great. But the portions are tiny. I'm not a fan of restaurants that emphasize quantity over quality. But I ordered a filet which came with mashed potatoes. And there was literally one tablespoon of potatoes on my plate. My wife got a decent sized piece of salmon. But it came with nothing else. And it's not like they have a "sides" menu. You just need to know that may want to order a "small plate" to go along with your entree.
Really unique and excellent variety in the recipes. Everything cooked to perfection and superb attentive service.
The restaurant aspires to quality cuisine but service limitations restrict it from being much more than a shout bar. We asked for a quiet table; were seated outdoors; no one else was dining there; and the music blasted away -- even after we asked to lower it. The most serious problem is the food preparation is careless: the baba ghanouj appetizer was served with cold charred black toast. There was a 10 minute wait between when my companion's entree arrived and mine. We were well on the way through sharing the on-time entree (not our plan to do so) when the other one arrived: cold, and also with cold charred black toast (do they burn the bread ahead of time and then put it in the cooler)? The waiter was not familiar with the names of the wines; took 15 minutes before coming back to say they didn't have the one we ordered. Also not familiar with the food on the menu: "Blackened lamb -- well, that's a meat; it comes with a sauce." Was overly familiar with the customers: I got a hearty (unwanted) pat on the shoulder after each apology. Hopefully, this was his first day. If not, then hopefully his last.
Just a great place for a quiet and leisurely Sunday dinner. The Caesar Salad is a spectacular stack of Romaine bedazzled by spices.
The pasta and boat Bolognese is just superb! And desert is a joy.
The food was quite different, imaginative and very tasty. Several of the dishes are made for sharing. This location has hosted a stream of restaurants over the past few years. The decor was a little nicer before, but most importantly the food was great.
The night started out rather poorly - a distracted hostess talked down to us and seemed to be preoccupied with something that was bothering her. Our waiter seemed frustrated and annoyed and rushed while taking our order, and could barely crack a smile. His attitude was rather poor. The food was good and unique, which is why I’m giving this restaurant three stars. The runners area is set up in a bad spot right behind the booth tables and the waiters and waitresses are having loud conversations between themselves right behind you, not to mention the constant loud clanking of stacking plates and silverware behind your head without any real regard for any customers being right there. The food runners had the best attitude in the place. Everyone else seemed like they had just gotten done being yelled at. Ambiance is nice other than aforementioned noise issues, food is good, service was mediocre, but the vibe of the place was a real downer.
An amazing dinner starting with the enormous caesar salad and carrot tacos followed by shortrib and wild boar sausage pappardelle pasta and steak. The steak was so tender it was cut with only a butter knife. Everything was tasty and beautifully plated. Will return to try other dishes and hopefully have enough room left for dessert.
