We were looking forward to dining here and despite making reservations well in advance, we were relegated to a high top tucked way in the corner of the bar, right outside the kitchen. It was the only table in the room and we were told it was Jackie O’s favorite table. Given that we were not looking to be incognito, we were a bit nonplussed that we were stuck in Siberia. Because it was already later than we would have preferred, we decided to make the best of it, and the food and service were wonderful. But given we were celebrating our 20th anniversary, we felt like we missed out on all the ambiance of this historic space.
One of the best meals I've ever had. James was superb.
Cool to eat at such an old restaurant with nice ambiance and great food
Very cool tavern with wonderful service! Drinks and food were both delicious!
Anniversary dinner, service was excellent. Cocktails, Chowder and oysters, steak frites and swordfish all delicious. Desserts missed the mark; pumpkin tart was not a tart, more like a cold muffin. Overall this is a great, quiet romantic spot to relax.
Please Bring back the lobster mac and cheese .
My burrata tomato appetizer had unripe tomatoes; very disappointing
It was our last night in Newport for our very brief honeymoon; we made the reservation a few weeks earlier. When doing research for the best food in Newport, White Horse kept coming up. Not only was the food amazing, but the server, Sue, was wonderful and understanding of my food allergies. The tavern itself is also just a really cool setting.
It had been many yrs since we have eaten here & it did not disappoint!! We sat on the 2nd floor & despite being senior citizens, the stairs were manageable. My husband had the Beef Wellington & I had the Pan-seared scallops. I usually can not finish a meal but even had room for the orange vanilla creme brulee_the secret was no appetizer. The atmosphere is quiet & dimly lit, only a few tables per room.
James, our server, was pleasant & attentive. We were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary. Highly recommend!!
Our first visit was all around excellent. Food was superb - from pork belly and foie gras to lobster ravioli and duck, and then finishing with the chocolate goat cheese dessert. Never had heard of chocolate goat cheese before but it was great. Very good drinks/wine and excellent service from James and his team. Already looking forward to a return visit.
Just fantastic historical tavern with great food! Once in a lifetime experience
First time there and first time having Beef Wellington. It was excellent!
Great service too.
Wonderful food, excellent service….very special evening!
Excellent service, the food was prepared well and the timing of each course was perfect.
James our waiter was courteous and extremely efficient. Hostess did a great job accommodating our request to sit on the first floor. Fantastic
Everything about the tavern is perfect. We had the best meal we have ever had in our lives and are still taking about it today. Will be back for sure!
Disappointed. First the dress code. We took it seriously and made an effort to comply. But many others were seated near us with dress in complete noncompliance of the policy. Very upsetting! Also we were disappointed that while we gave clear message that we were celebrating a 50th wedding anniversary there was very little effort to acknowledge that. Our server did mention it but come on….would a complimentary scoop of cream at the meals end been impossible?? Our bill was HUGE! Very disappointed that this was overlooked. And finally …also regarding the reservation. I made this reservation many weeks ago. I mentioned the special anniversary at that time. We should have been given the best table in the restaurant but instead were seated in the noisiest room of all. The food was great but I expect more from a place like this!!!
The atmosphere is so nice.. you feel like you're in a different era. The food was amazing. The scallops were the best I've ever had. Our waiter was great.. overall, a perfect dining experience!
Dinner was delish
Staff was very professional
Always love coming to the white horse tavern. This was a special occasion and Sara was wonderful, drinks and food excellent. You do not disappoint!!
Highly recommend the oysters and the beef Wellington. While you are at it, get a nice sip of Pappy Van Winkle!
The crab cake and duck were delicious. A great evening out!!
It was a terrific meal. I had the beef Wellington and the presentation was fabulous. My husband had the swordfish and a wedge salad to start and my friends had the salmon. I would like to go back to try the crispy duck.
The ambience is cozy and authentic colonial. It is pricey but worth more!
The website for the historic White Horse Tavern gave the impression that the restaurant was very upscale. We found the interior to be dark and dreary. We were seated at a table upstairs. The stairway was not well lit, making it difficult to climb the steps. Hard-surface chairs made sitting uncomfortable. The dinner menu offerings were nice. Food was presented attractively, but the taste was nothing special, disappointing. Service was okay.
Superb food! We celebrated a birthday, this was a great choice for the occasion. Friendly and attentive staff, historic and interesting ambience. The Beef Wellington was excellent. Lobster Mac and cheese did not disappoint. Unique and delicious desserts. Saving our pennies for our next visit!
The wine list is impressive, food is delicious and server was very attentive, helpful and friendly. Can't wait to go back.
Food outstanding. Waitress seemed uninterested in job.
Thought this place was amazing. The service was very traditional down to the way our waiter was dressed. Very classy very attentive. The historical aspect of this place makes it so much fun. And as other reviewers have stated the food here is top notch. Very pleased with our visit here.
The service was fantastic. Our server was great and recommended great dishes that were executed perfectly. We will definitely be back next year.
Beef Wellington never disappoints. Everything was fantastic.
an absolute delight !! our server was both highly professional, and thoroughly engaging. every recommendation was spot on, graciously served on the patio, with just the right amount of time between courses to make our 50th anniversary dinner memorable. simply a perfect meal in every way
We loved the ambiance of this 1673 tavern which is even older than the date it became a restaurant. This was probably best food we had on our trip to Newport.
The food is delicious & reasonably priced for a fancy restaurant. The atmosphere is extremely charming & brings you back to the 17tu century when it was founded. This is our 6th time coming here & never disappoints.
An exceptional experience…not only fabulous food, but very interesting, unique, historical setting.
We loved it!!
Poor overall experience. Appetizers and cocktail were good. Two bites into her swordfish dinner my wife found a large share of broken plastic. The waitress was apologetic. The manager then came out questioning how it got there and insisting that it couldn’t have come from the restaurant. After some debate he agreed to replace the meal. 20 minutes later it came out. Too late. We declined it. He then, with an annoyed tone, said it was on the house. We still declined and said the kitchen staff could have it. The manager was unprofessional. Clearly did not respect the customer. Regardless we tipped the waitress on what would have been the full bill before the meal was deleted. Not her fault. Would not go back.
Good food and wonderful service priced right!! Recommend highly
Good ambience and service. Nice for a special occasion setting. Food was was basic and done adequately. Food presentation and creativity was lacking for a place with this reputation. Solidly average.
Delicious seafood (with fine service) in a historical setting.
I love this place! It is amazing every time we visit and always perfect!
Such a wonderful experience to dine in American’s oldest tavern in rooms rich with authentic history. But don’t expect anything “antique” coming from the kitchen—the presentation and preparation is beautifully and inventively executed. Equally impressive is the friendly and expert service. Be sure to ask them for tales about the tavern!
