The service was mediocre. Both the host and the server were kind of cold.
Brunch was excellent, highly recommended!
We love this place - drinks, food, service are all outstanding & the chef is friendly, accommodating and skilled - it's our new "go to" - especially for weekend brunch.
Wonderful service, tasty food and perfect portion sizes. The drinks were great as well. Service was fantastic! We will be back.
The view was great! The food was awesome! It did get a bit loud, but I could still hear everyone in my group, and I was glad to see they were doing well.
Friendly service, excellent food. Great middle of the week casual dinner.
First time eating here. I can only attest to the Ceasar salad. Lettuce in ceasar salad wasn’t great and wasn’t much dressing on the salad. Croutons were little bricks with not much flavor. Added chicken but was barely any on salad. I really love ceasar salad so I was bummed. However, they have a tasty margarita.
The food, service, and ambience was good not great. The only complaint I would make would be about the burrata heirloom tomato salad. No way were they heirloom tomatoes however the burrata was good!
We come here every time we visit San Diego! We especially love the calamari! This time we also ordered the artichoke appetizer. The fresh artichoke flavoured with olive oil and garlic was the best we have ever eaten anywhere. Derick was our server and he was friendly, down to earth, and knowledgeable about everything on the menu. I highly recommend West End!
Food and service were great! Clam chowder was excellent!
We enjoyed our first experience at Westend! Bob Fitzgibbon
Great server no.10
It was our 34th anniversary. Was the best meal we had ever had!!! Wonderful wonderful wonderful! Will be back!!!!
West End, Ho! Very nice and pleasantly unexpected treat
Patio table was lovely. Food was very good and ample portion. Service was friendly and attentive.
Food is fantastic. Servers were great but had to really hop to take care of a full house.
Great environment. Celebrated my birthday with friends. Had a great time and the food was great !
Excellent food and service. The view and decor was great.
Clam Chowder Thumbs up! Duck Pot stickers Thumbs up! Delmar Crab Ravioli Thumbs up
Seemed very popular with the locals which is always a good sign. Huge portions of both apps and meals, which made it a good value. Very tasty (crab salad and roasted Brussels sprouts). Short ribs were a little salty and more like a stew. Service was fine we were there early so may not have had entire crew in yet.
Our waiter did a great job during the course of our meal. All the food came out on time, correctly, and tasted great. Our drinks never went too long without being refreshed. He even heard me exclaim that an extra scoop of ice cream would be great to have with the cobbler and brought it out without me even asking! Now that's service! We would definitely go back.
Excellent food - buratta cheese & Brussel sprouts as starters - followed by lamb shank ( my husband) and entree crab salad ( me) - all delicious! And they serve a decent martini to boot!!
This was the first time we had been to this restaurant. After months of not going out at all we were meeting good friends and wanted to try a new place. The menu looked good; lots of options along with a full bar and nice wines. The restaurant had inside and outside dining that was very comfortable. Parking was a minor issue but not enough to make it so we wouldn't come back again. The main downfall was our server. He was very pushy, not patient at all. It took us a few minutes to get settled and to look at the menu to decide on drinks. That did not make him happy at all. (Just to be clear, the restaurant was fairly quiet so it wasn't like he wanted to turn the table quickly). Three out of the four of us ordered a drink. We also ordered an appetizer to share. When it came to ordering an entree, my husband and I decided to share. He rolled his eyes and huffed off like we were the worst patrons ever. It wasn't like we weren't spending any money. Our bill was almost $200, not including tip. I know we all need to be patient and considerate of each other especially right now with what we've all been going through with the pandemic but doesn't that go both ways? Maybe we were on a tight budget. Or maybe we were on a diet. This was not for the waiter to judge. He needs to have a little customer service training if he is going to stay in the hospitality industry. And unfortunately, it might keep me from recommending this restaurant to friends even though we all really enjoyed our meals. It was one of the better meals I've had out in a restaurant in years. If we ever went back and this person was going to wait on us, I'd ask for another server or I'd get up and leave.
Great location in Del Mar. Phenomenal food; the halibut was outstanding. Very pleasant wait staff, too. This was our first visit and we will be coming back.
Our order got mixed up with the next table and extra delayed. This is a busy place and the kitchen was slammed and short-staffed so food arrived slowly. Front of house staff was clearly harried/busy but eventually was gracious and corrected the issue, and even gifted us a nice dessert to make amends. The kale ravioli was great, as was the salad. Food has good flavor & some mild creative twists. Location is nice with beautiful view of lagoon from outdoor seating. Busy bar level of noise. Parking is along street and may require a short search. We would come back again, but be prepared to spend some time waiting if they have a busy night.
Great ambiance. Got there before 6pm, and it was very quiet. They have good wine by the glass, and the menu has a nice selection across the board. The West End salad is quite good, with blue cheese and pears. The chicken cutlets with arugula are good, though the salad a little dry. My wife loved the Scottish fish.
Great casual place with great drinks n service
Really nice evening. Food was delicious, setting lovely, and exceptional service. Was a bit disappointed to see no masking by staff or patrons coming and going, which I think may keep some people away. But outdoor areas are well ventilated and I will definitely return.
Great service and food!
First time at this establishment and was glad I came. The food and service was 1st class, and unlike most restaurants it was quite and comfortable. Portions are large, and the food is outstanding. If you enjoy Lamb Shanks this is the go-to place. The rest of the menu has something for everyone, and is extensive. Will come back here again.
This was our first time to West End and it won't be our last. We started with cocktails and appetizers, the "Goat Cheese" and the "Flat bread". All were really delicious and very generous servings. We were 4 people. The service was good and had someone checking on us several times. We ordered entrees and they did not disappoint. The West End Salad was delicious. Two of us had the "Duck Confit" and the "Lobster Ravioli". Everyone enjoyed their meals. We had lively conversation going on as did all the other tables around us. We sat in the outside covered patio.
My wife and I enjoyed brunch at West End Sunday - it was really enjoyable - great service (sat at a high top in the bar - the bartender was an excellent host), wonderful food (fish tacos and the tuna melt), bloody Mary's were perfect, etc.. This is the second time we've been in since the beginning of the pandemic - what a joy to rediscover and it's right here in Carmel Valley. Great job! We highly recommend.
We were celebrating my friend's birthday and the staff was especially attentive. So nice. They even brought her a special birthday dessert. The food did not disappoint! Our birthday guest had the duck and was a bit skeptical to order, but said it was wonderful. My husband had been craving a good burger, and was thoroughly satisfied with the angus burger. I ordered the nightly special, Branzini with a creamy pesto sauce. It was lovely. I especially enjoyed the mashed potatoes and the grilled vegetables. Everything was fresh and flavorful. My friend ordered the fruit cobbler and my husband & I split the Tiramisu. Again, we thoroughly enjoyed them both.
My one disappointment was that the staff were not wearing masks. No one. It made us think twice about staying for dinner. While I would love to believe every one of them is fully vaccinated, I work in the hotel & restaurant business and know that population is not as conscientious about vaccinations. Without getting preachy, we know that wearing a mask aids in the prevention of COVID transmission to them, the restaurant worker, and it also minimizes the risk of them having it and transmitting to a guest. West End has been one of our favorite local restaurants, but we are re-thinking that for the time being. And one small comment...the young man who was the server assistant was wearing what appeared to be high school logo'd gym shorts. Not attire we would expect to see in a finer restaurant like West End. His attire did spark a conversation at our table about current day dress codes and what that looks like during the pandemic and post pandemic. Our table was in agreement that his attire was not appropriate for the restaurant, for whatever that's worth. I see the next question coming in the survey is asking if I'd recommend the restaurant to a friend. For now, I'd have to say "no" because of the mask situation. Too bad because the food is delicious and the service was spot on.
Delicious food, outstanding service, we will be back soon...
I have to say quality is so bad it is disappointing to have spent over $200. Ugh!
The waiter was really nice but constantly bugging you to order (nicely) until you order but the attentiveness disappears as soon as your food comes. Also, the Food come too fast and the waiter
Be sure to ask if there is anything in the food not listed on the menu if you have allergies or cannot eat certain things. We had to send two meals back because they “marinated” the pork loin in siracha before breading and cooking…this preparation not only does not pair with the plated accompaniments but was unpalatable. The apple pear and cranberry chutney atop the meat was cold from the frig, the “whipped” potatoes were obviously made with waxy potatoes, over whipped so they were like glue, and they were reheated so partially cool. The vegetables, also seemed reheated, were overcooked, not hot, and soggy. Their “house made “ croutons are hard as rocks and flavorless.
The replacement items were just as poor quality but at least there were no hidden ingredients we were aware of.
The room was quite warm and the flies were a nuisance. I imagine that when the pandemic is over they will have that in resolved.
They serve overpriced cheap wine by the glass and make pesto with walnuts saying it is creamier but seriously how much creamier can walnuts be than pine nuts? I believe this is for cost savings.
Dessert? Seriously don’t bother. The profiteroles were frozen and hard and obviously came pre-made from a box from the Restaurant supplier. Yuck.
I think they need to cut this menu down to fewer items, partner with a local baker for REAL deserts and get better quality ingredients and chefs. But ultimately, people will eat anything.
For Italian food go to Little Italy or their neighbor Trattoria Ponte Vecchio - even they are much better!
Beware of the outdoor dining option. While the food and service were good, this place has a serious fly problem outside. There were flies swarming around our food throughout our meal which made it difficult to enjoy. At one point we counted 10 flies swirling around our ketchup. We tried to get a table closer to the road but were told those tables had been “specifically requested” and there was nothing they could do. If you plan on eating outdoors bring a fly swatter.
The food was very good, I had a nice mixed drink, and best of all the views out to Torrey Pines and the ocean were spectacular. Would definitely eat there again!
First time to visit Aug 2921 completely enjoyable brunch time meal had the lox Benedict OMG soooo good! Funky relaxed atmosphere with a view of the estuary
The food and environment were great! The service was also very good, but the hostess was very rude. We can be flexible, but we did not get to sit where we reserved and she very rudely said it was because the available tables were reserved for other parties.
The main courses weee excellent:halibut and cioppino were both very good with generous servings. The artichoke appetizer was just so so. Maybe a little too oily. Wine and beer choices were good and sorbet desert good also. Would go again
