The food was terrible. The chicken in the chicken paella was mainly fat and it was soooo spicy I couldn’t eat it.
We made our reservation a few days in advance and showed up a couple of minutes early only to find the entire place shut down. The lights were off, furniture stacked up, and all the doors but one shut.
Apparently, they’d ran out of food the night before and didn’t open for service that morning. This experience was the first of its kind and the least we’d expected was to get an alert/call from either open door or Virgil tacos themselves letting us know our reservation couldn’t be honored.
We’d heard some great reviews from our friends and really wanted to try this place out. We’ll be back sometime soon and hopefully, get to experience what our friends have been raving about.
Pleasantly surprised by this place. GREAT drinks, fun vibe, good food. Not sure why I havent been here before, but I will definitely be back.
The food was just OK, with honestly better Mexican at a strip mall place. The one hostess with blond hair was drunk and talking to us about how she had been at the pool all day. The kitchen couldn’t make a quesadilla for a guest with dietary restrictions, when simply a tortilla and cheese was all that was requested. Our waitress knew absolutely nothing about the menu or the drinks. She spilled a drink all over my friend’s phone and just walked away. We honestly will never be back, nor would we recommend this place to anyone who would like a decent meal and service.
We sat on the bar side at a high top. We loved the ambiance , decor and the food. Our server was good...at first...we were there a little after 8 but we were the only ones on that side of the restaurant before we even got through our appetizers....then, our server was MIA. I still think the food was good and it was a cool atmosphere but I recommend making a reservation (which we did) and going during their peak times.
I was so excited to try this place on my birthday. However, as others have pointed out- everything lacked flavor. The queso was not smooth. It was very grainy like it hadn't been heated enough. I ordered rice with my tacos and received beans instead. The beans were watery and soaked into the taco toritillas which instantly fell apart. The waitress did attempt to fix this by bringing me rice (extremely bland and dry) and some more tortillas to "reassemble" my tacos. At this point we were over it. I also agree about the drink prices. I first ordered a glass of wine for $10 which was TINY. Then the "special" mango margarita, which was also tiny and overfilled with ice- $13. We will not be going back. Do yourself a favor and go to Gringo instead. Insanely better food, prices and drinks.
Great! The employees were very passionate!
Service was excellent, as were the cocktails. However that’s where my praise ends. Food was disappointing, especially for the price. You even have to pay extra for chips and salsa. The tables and chairs on the sidewalk are small and uncomfortable. You can’t put your legs under them. All in all it cost more than $60 for mediocre tacos and two drinks. I’ve been here twice now (the second time because of Raleigh offline) and I won’t be back.
I’m not one to complain about food ever, but the meal I had at Virgil’s was truly awful. Out of the 8 people at our table, 6 of us barely touched our food - almost all of us had something different too!
Two of us (myself included) had our meals comped because our waitress acknowledged that it was made poorly.
Our server was absolutely wonderful and handled everything well and the ambiance is super cute but I’m sad to say this isn’t the first time Virgil’s food has disappointed me. Definitely not worth the money and I will not be returning.
I wasn’t impressed by the food, it was very basic for the price. Our waitress was nice and possibly new but the service was not good. My husband ordered a drink that he never received, I think she completely forgot. Anyways, wasn’t my favorite.
Amazing place!! The food and drinks are amazing and service was great! Also, reslly nice music!
This place is is fantastic! Highly recommend ordering the Cameron de petardo for an appetizer and the fkn Catalina for a cocktail. Everything was great though!
The music outdoors was so too loud to carry on. A conversation. To make sure it wasn’t just me, I looked around the seating area and everyone was having to lean in to hear one another. That was unfortunate as we brought a couple who are friends of ours and had to leave in order to have conversation. The staff and manager did respond to our request to lower the volume. My thought: The music needs to be lower during dinner hours and then can be turned up as bar operations increase.
Otherwise, the food and service was fantastic. I’d like to try again an
Food was okay but since the reopening it’s clear the quality has gone down a bit. Fewer menu options, queso went from being former quality down to velveta quality. Prices also went up. Over all my meal was fine but probably won’t go back due to quality for cost. Service was good, ambiance was good.
Loved the old Virgil’s. We were excited to go back after it reopened. We were very disappointed! The service was incredibly slow and terrible, the food was mediocre, and the music was so loud that it was hard to carry on a conversation. We will not go back.
Good music, nice ambience, great cocktails.
Everything was perfect besides the music was a bit loud. The service from our waitress was fantastic when present, otherwise was a tad slow.
Loved the food and drinks. Your new male bartender (long hair) was AWESOME. We loved the DJ ‘Mayor’. Food was so good, favorite was question and pollo paella.
The waiters didn’t communicate and left us waiting for 5-10 mins service after they had seated us. We watched three other tables get asked for drinks. I had to walk in and let someone know we were seated and no one offered us service. If I didn’t do that, they likely would’ve left us waiting.
We ordered the Chile con queso appetizer and it was cold & bland.
We ordered avocado and shrimp tacos - both were under seasoned. The beans & rice side were also bland.
All in all, this restaurant is just ok and felt it was overpriced. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone or return.
Everything was bland, under seasoned, and so far from anything resembling authentic Mexican flavor. Drinks were very weak and expensive. We will not be back.
We made a reservation, at the time of our reservation, we arrived a few minutes early. We had to wait for a table. Two other walk-up parties, our same size, were seated ahead of us. The service we received was 5-10 minutes behind. We sat without water for 10 minutes and without menus for 20. The parklet is completely off balance and the server insisted that we use stemmed wine glasses even after we expressed how frustrating it was to keep them balanced. The other parties that were sat ahead of us, without reservations, were served 10 minutes ahead of us. There was not a manager walking the floor of the restaurant during the time we needed to speak with one. The DJ was very loud for a Tuesday evening, almost intolerable to talk inside the restaurant. The food was wonderful, as always, as well as the wine. Just tough to get past how awful the service was.
Food was just ok - drinks were beautiful and yummy. Ambiance was very loud
The menu is creative for both the cocktails and the food. Cocktails are very good when I’ve had them in the past but too much ice to cocktail ratio. No free chips and salsa sucks but this is not that kind of restaurant and if you do order the chips with pico/guac etc it’s very good!
For the food, this is my third time here and it just feels like there is lacking of flavor whether it is the fried avocado having more texture, a better dry rub on the shrimp or more sauce on certain items. The menu is super creative as mentioned above although I just feel it’s not achieving what it wants for $16 tacos
Terrific food and service. We had an outside table and when it began to rain, they immediately were able to move us inside.
We found out about Virgil’s through Offline and I was skeptical about it since I come from a Mexican household but I was pleasantly surprised! It definitely does not feel like eating at a cantina, but the flavors are just right! And they know what they mean when they say something is spicy! Grab your partner, or your friends, and have a fun night DTR at Virgil’s!
Really nice to have the new space outdoors!
Went to Virgil’s for a date night. Food was really good and had a nice atmosphere! Only complaint was that the margs were fairly small and completely filled with ice, for $14 it did not feel like a good value.
Food and service were below average. The queso was grainy and not hot and the meat was greasy.
Good apps, good drinks but the are tiny. Entrees were not so good😣. Asked for medium rare carne asado tacos, they came well done. Everyone at table had some experience. Cool place, too bad food was not up to par.
Everything was really delicious and the service was super friendly!
I had an offline coupon
Food, cocktails, and our server were amazing. I do think 6pm on Friday seems like an incongruous time to be blasting club music at diners—I love to dance but it just didn’t fit the elevated food/cocktails we were experiencing. Also the kitchen / servers need to coordinate timing of courses better. We ordered an app, a small plate and an entree and all three came out at once. Our table was too small to fit everything so they had to take a plate back to the kitchen. A minor issue ultimately compared to how excellent the food was but something to work on. We raised the concern when approached by one of the managers in the interest of constructive feedback but he seemed pretty disinterested. We’ll be back but maybe on a weeknight when things are more chill.
It was so loud in there that I could not even hear the waitress. I asked about Music being less than full blast and she did not take the time to go ask the DJ. I specifically asked about not having spicy and she brought me a salad entree with a dressing so spicy I could not eat it. I asked for more water and she did not bring another container until we were almost done with the meal. So I'd never go back on a night with a DJ as the place is just too small for music that belongs on a dance floor nor would I ever want such bad service.
Great! Who expects memorable Mexican food? Everything was unique and delicious. Our server Cameron was great too. I bet it’s even better sitting outdoors. We’ll be back when it’s warmer outside.
Great place with great atmosphere, food and service.
The reimagined Virgils Cocktails and Cocina did not disappoint! From the moment you step in you can tell there is a different vibe, vision, and influence that they are going for compared to other establishments in Raleigh, and that’s a good thing. We started off with the guacamole and chips and moved to the al pastor and shrimp tacos. These will be familiar to those who have had the same tacos in the past. Very good portions and fillings of meat/ additions, with great flavor. The fried plantains with Chile vinegar stole the show with just enough sweet with a complimenting heat from the Chile. Each drink was well crafted and you could see the attention to detail + experience is being focused on. The Margarita Estacional was the perfect way to kick off the evening. The touch of seasonal fruit accompanied with the house sour was a great blend. The ambiance was energetic and low lit. It had the feel and vibe of a big city restaurant that was on everyone’s must try lists. Overall we had a fantastic experience and will be going back to try other drinks and full entrees. Highly recommend.
Overall, I would say this place is hit or miss depending on your palette. We ordered two mains and got an appetizer for free because our food was taking so long - but not at the fault of the restaurant. They were out of something in one of our dishes and warned us ahead of time that it might take longer than usual. They brought us the free app and talked it up a lot, saying it was their fav app on the menu but to me it was BEYOND bland. Like you could not taste anything. Our main dishes were good, but spicy! It was almost like they needed to take some of the spices from my dish and put it in the appetizer. Overall, if I went back I would pass on the app and just stick with the main. Its definitely not a restaurant that you go back to explore other options. You stick with what you know is good. I got the braised pork sopes and again, while spicy, it wasn't intolerable. I would order again!
Good food and service!
The food was great and atmosphere was nice. Service was exceptional and cocktails were superior. Will definitely go again.
Staff was friendly made great suggestions and the food was awesome
