Virgil's Original Taqueria
The food was excellent, best tortilla chips i have ever had. My one issue-the waitress brought our check as I was starting my second taco. The restaurant wasn't crowded and we hadn't been there an inordinate amount of time. I felt a little rushed.
This was our first and probably only time comin here Food was okay, not great. Got two mojitos that were on special, both tasted completely different from the other. Waiter was awesome, hostess seemed really distracted when we came in.
Well, I went here once at maybe 1:30 in the morning and it was still open and the food was great. I decided to come again for my birthday dinner because I enjoyed the ambiance and food. When I first went the chips and salsa was free, and I was surprised when I had to pay for chips and pico this experience. $6 is very over priced for Chips and a Pico that was less than appetizing. I was excited for the queso because it’s one of their specialties. Well, they were out of queso and the server also informed us of them being out of shrimp tacos. The waitress really tried to offer different food and some were good, but others were disgusting. The tostones were good, a little tough to eat, but once you figure it out they are great. We had the Steak and Chicken ones. The Carnita tacos weren’t authentic carnitas. Carnitas are shredded pork and the ones they served were cubed and way over cooked. The cilantro rice was over cooked as well and surprisingly cold. Even the free birthday churros they gave to me were over fried and brick hard. I was very disappointed and surprised at the quality of food. Also, the location isn’t the best. Parking wasn’t worth the hassle especially when the food wasn’t that great. All in all, I want to try it again but the over priced chips and salsa, and the cold unappetizing food was just disappointing especially for a spot that’s supposed to specialize in Mexican street cuisine.
Great food, even better cocktails. The El Duderino is like a White Russian with a twist (HORCHATA!). Servers were wonderful and gave us recommendations that we loved! This will be our date night spot in the future!
Food is so good! Tacos are authentic and chips are fresh and delicious!
Best carnitas tacos I’ve ever had! Great atmosphere, excellent food, kind servers, and I’ll be back soon!
the best queso we have ever had, love the casual atmosphere and the fresh quality of the food!!
Delicious as always. Chips are unique and queso is amazing. Tacos are filling and have been spot on each time. Amazing drink selection- Mexcal, cocktails, and beer (except draft/craft beer).
We were so excited to try Virgil’s after reading reviews, but it was very disappointing. Poor flavors, decent prices. Wouldn’t go back.
Food and cocktails were really good. It was Cinco de Mayo and they were clearly unprepared for the volume of customers, therefore service was lacking. It took 20 minutes to get drinks and then received the wrong one but just kept it to avoid waiting another 20. The chips are amazing! So were the guac and tacos!
Awesome food, tacos with #126 margarita with a shot of Grand marnier is the best drink ever!
Probably the best tacos I’ve had in Raleigh! The service was great, food was great, and the ambiance was so cool! Get the guac, it’ll change your life!
Being from Texas, I was a bit suspicious when I saw that they charged $3 for tortilla chips. Do not let this dissuade you. Their chips are the best I've had outside of Texas/Mexico, their guacamole was delicious, and their tacos were hearty and authentic. For 2 people, with 1 drink each, chips & guac, 2 tacos per person and 1 dessert, expect to be very full and to pay around $50 + tip.
Great tacos and drinks!
While other local joints are good for other Latin/Mexican food, my husband and I love Virgil's for the occasional date night when we're in the mood for some really good tacos. Have tried every type, and can't complain about any of them (though my personal favorites are the butternut squash and carne). Prices are per taco, which is great for mixing things up. Plus, everything is cooked in front of you (we sit at the bar) - amazing (kind of sweet) chips and all! Cocktails are wonderful and not at all stingy. Fully plan to start testing the signature plates list next time.
Fish tacos & chorizo tacos were VERY very good. Carnitas was flavorful, but not crispy-edged, as we prefer. Crafted cocktails were imaginative and tasty, though two of the 3 different ones ordered seemed kinda tiny for the price ($9), that's what good stuff goes for these days. Fun outside seating, and a roll-up door to allow air to move in which is a plus as you will come out smelling like food, but FRESH, HOMEMADE chips are delicious, too, and worth your hair smelling bit like fried Mexican food! It was loud. But they were very accommodating, and lowered the volume, though not to where we didn't still strain to hear each other. But we really liked it overall, and will go back!
The hostess was kind of aloof but the food made up for it. Very yummy. Will definitely return!
I had been wanting to try this place and picked the perfect weekday evening. We sat outside on the sidewalk tables, but the inside is so cute. It's narrow, but well designed, and there's an upstairs which I haven't actually seen yet. The staff is really cool and friendly. It's laid back with a hip flair. Excellent drinks and creative cocktails with lots of vegan options. It's a great place for a casual meet up with creative, delicious small bites and good drinks. I loved it and my date did too. Excited to come back!
Excellent food and service! The backroom we were originally seated in was very loud so we moved to the bar and had a great dining experience.
We made a reservation and got right in. I made a reservation for a high top & ended up with a table at the front door in the immediate draft-zone. We didn't realize that at first and accepted the seat. We tried to get the hostesses attention to get another seat & she took about ten minutes, then grabbed someone from the bar for a better seat that was not too far from us. That totally sucked. Our server was absolutely amazing and brought everything out quickly, which made up for it. I am still a bit annoyed that we reserved a high top (completely out of the way of the draft from the door) & got some other crap instead. The hostess was starting to seat us there before we said our name, so it didn't sit right for many reasons.
Very accommodating, even though we arrived about 20 minutes late for the reservation. Tried their restaurant week menu - very filling and tasty!
The torte sandwich with carnitas, the tortilla chips and guacamole, and all the tacos are amazing! The staff are friendly and the ambiance festive! Highly recommend.
Fantastic food and service! A hidden gem for sure!
