The red wine list is endless, which is a good thing, and server's knowledge was very helpful as we navigated it. We've been to Vertical for dinner a half dozen times now and have never been disappointed. The food, wine, drinks, ambience, service all are top notch, and we will be returning soon.
We had a truly wonderful experience. The food was terrific and we were never pressed during our 3 1/2 hour dinner with old friends. We really appreciated the attention from everyone including the owner's wife who was "filling in" because her husband was in Napa! We will definitely be back!
Lovely night and showcased a wonderful place to my NYC friends visiting -- they loved it, as did I
I am so sorry that I did not know about this place sooner. What a gem in Detroit!! The wine list is incredible, including wine by the glass options. I had the lamb chops and they were the best I ever had. We shared the octopus carpaccio which was unique and excellent too. Salad choices were great as well. They also easily accommodated my gluten free preference. I will definitely be back.
+ decent food and service
+ unique interior
+ diverse wine selection
+ attentive service
- offputting smell in lobby
- narrow walk areas
- tight seating designs
- very loud noise level
- under average portion size
Decent food however you can find other places with better food at a lower price with a more relaxing ambient.
Vertical Detroit was wonderful. The food and wines were delicious. The staff was attentive. The ambience as pleasant and soothing. Truly and exclusive, but expensive experience. Loved it!
The food and drink were amazing and the service spectacular. The only factor that made our evening less than perfect was the level of noise in the restaurant.
We were VERY disappointed with our recent return to Vertical Detroit. We were almost totally ignored by our waiter who never asked about what we ordered. The items we had were expensive but VERY disappointing. The portions were skimpy, poorly assembled and presented. The “charcuterie tray for five” barely served three and the items looked thrown together literally. The scallops that I had were delicious but, once again, the presentation very sloppy and disappointing. We eat out frequently… Sometimes three and four times a week as our OpenTable membership would indicate. This is singularly one of the worst meals we had a very long time. We were a party of six and frequently dine in the “D.” We all agreed that, when looking for a place to go for a pre-theater meal we’ll look elsewhere.
The filet and lamb chops were delicious. Huge variety of wines for all tastes and price points.
The service was impeccable, the atmosphere was fun and lively, the food was excellent. I’m going to be dreaming about their brussel sprouts. It is expensive!
Wasnt not impressed with the food at all. Restaurant atmosphere / drinks were very nice
Excellent, staff was wonderful, food was great, and ambiance was perfect.
Food was excellent and Brian helped us select two wines very complementary to our meals. Ambiance was pleasant, cozy and quiet, servers attentive.
This was our first visit and we will definitely go again.
Food was good, service was great - except they kept refilling my regular water with seltzer water. :)
Excellent environment. Efficient wait staff. Frienlyd. Great risotto and fish dish. Wine selection excellent.
Fantastic experience! Over 100 wines by the glass! Food is top notch.
Amazing service , food , ambience . 10/10 easily. Wow.
The food was delicious but the portions were extremely small, especially for the price.
I went to Vertical with 5 girlfriends for dinner and a night out. We were greeted, seated quickly, and our table was perfect. The waiter was knowledgeable and made some good suggestions. Everyone enjoyed their dinners : duck breast, scallops, lamb chops, and filet. We also had the side of roasted Brussels sprouts which were excellent.
The wine list was very good, but wine by the glass is a bit high. All and all, the meal was perfect and the ambience lovely. I was surprised that I could get a reservation for exactly the time I wanted and that the restaurant was not more crowded. Perhaps it is because it is pricy. Everything is ala carte and the bill can add up quickly. The quality is there, but maybe Detroit is not ready for Chicago and New York prices.
Very surprised about this restaurant. Made reservations one day prior. Great service from Theresa, food fantastic. This is a great hidden gem. Highly recommend for whatever the occasion might be.
Special cozy place to go with friends or a significant other. Amazing wine selection and knowledgeable staff. You must try the Grapes and Olives appetizers.
Filet was excellent, enjoyed the Super Trooper 2.0 cocktail. Attentive service and nice ambience. Not inexpensive but a good choice for a nice evening out. Perfect place to visit before or after a show at the Fox Theater or Opera House, both easy walks once you’re parked.
I absolutely love EVERYTHING about this restaurant. Amazing, unique food along with a fresh twist on old standbys. Best wine selection in Michigan (you can order a "Vertical glass"(the same wine but 3 different years of that wine in 3 different glasses so you can taste the difference year by year.) Karl and Theresa are amazing behind the bar and the family owned restaurant often has at least one of the family on hand.
I'd give 7 stars if I could,
Looking for this place to go under soon. It would be better off as just a really good wine bar. They have a very short menu yet were out of one featured vegetable and a main dish. Have to move on as I can't rely on Vertical when entertaining.
Charcuterie was excellent. The menu was pretty limited. Few vegetarian options and no options for kids (even off menu). Food was just okay and very pricey. Liked the ambiance and the wine. I’d come back just for drinks.
Service was outstanding. Very knowledgeable on wine selection made great recommendations. Food was well prepared and presented perfectly. I will definitely be going back soon lovely experience.
Vertical is by far one of my favorite places for special occasions or a glass of wine and their famous olives! Karl, the bartender, never leads me in the wrong direction when it comes to wine. I’ve never had a bad meal at Vertical, but regardless how they are made the story ribs and scallops are my top voices on my list!
Everything was great, happy hour for sitting at bar only, a bit of a communication miss but we loved our experience
Food and service are always outstanding!!
Need New Management: Since its opening my husband and I have frequented Vertical--often bringing other family members and friends. Remy and the Vertical staff have always been very warm and welcoming. Unfortunately, our recent visit was profoundly unpleasant. The noise level was ridiculously loud. And although we pretty much ignored the noise of a large party, mostly because we enjoy the bar area, the obscene disruptions caused by a party of two was unignorable. *Once* the server said something to them, but they became worse. And to add insult to injury the manager whose name I cannot recall at the moment *never* addressed them, even as he sat closest in proximity to them eating his meal. Several times he glanced over to them, at times making eye contact with the gal and having verbal exchanges with them both, almost in participation. Never once asking them to quiet down or watch their language. And although they, mostly the guy in the party, had been extremely loud for quite some time, when he yelled to his gal friend, "We're f#king going to LA b#tch!" And she jumped up on him wrapping her legs around him NO ONE SAID A WORD to them. They were treated as if their behavior was acceptable. And it was not! It was absolutely unacceptable. Clearly, they'd had way too much to drink in celebration, as the drinks kept coming. As we were leaving, my husband pulled the manager to the side, who repeatedly interrupted my husband with feigned apologies, while not fully listening. We couldn't help but wonder if that had been a Black or couple of color that had behaved so reprehensibly, if the behavior would have been tolerated at all. Or even more, if Remy had been in the room. I can't imagine that she would have let that type of display in her establishment go unchecked--whatever the racial/ethnic identity of the person/people. That said, not sure when, or if, we'll be returning. And that's unfortunate, we really enjoy the staff, the food, and usually the atmosphere.
Wonderful menu selection, knowledgeable wait staff, comfortable atmosphere
Theatre tickets. Made sure we received our order and bill in time to make it to the show. Waiter was very knowledgeable. Ordered a non alcoholic drink from the bar based on general preferences that was very well received.
Ambiance for this wine bar is superb. Our favorite restaurant for speciality occasions. Food is excellent. Service is exceptional, with a great knowledge of the food and wines.
The food was great, the recommended wine perfect and service was impeccable. Pricey but worth it.
We had a great dinner before going to a show downtown. We will definitely go back! The waitstaff was very attentive, the wine list is extensive and the food was excellent.
The tap Old Fashioned is really sweet, be warned. The atmosphere varies by room but both are great in their own ways. Tall people don't fit well at the counter height tables due to the high chairs and the low tops, don't be afraid to ask for the high top tables - we were relocated with ease. Great service all around.
Great place! Great food, service and ambiance - can’t wait to return
Perfection in every way, amazing menu, service and atmosphere. Best wine selection in the city
We stumbled on Vertical Detroit when trying to find a place to eat before a show at the Music Hall. The staff was very good; although our waiter did not seem as well trained as the others we saw around us. The food was terrific. I had the duck, which was perfectly cooked. My son loved his fish. My wife's risotto was delicious. They have a good selection of wines, including a variety of wine flights. Gimmicky, but can make for a fun night. We lamented the closing of Small Plates, the Vertical Detroit is a worthy replacement for the theater district. Right next to the Opera House parking garage, it will be our choice before a show in the future.
