My Gracious Wife took me out for my Birthday Dinner as she previously researched many restaurant. We have both agreed on UMEDA as our Final Choice and there is absolutely nothing to regret.
From the moment we walked in we were warmly greeted by our server/bartender David and the team of three chefs masterfully lead by Head Chef and Owner Mr. Takuya Umeda himself.
The atmosphere is very pleasant, quite romantic I could say, with dimmed spot light, a modern design and high quality jazz music played at an adequate level so it won't overpower your conversation or force you to scream to be heard.
The open kitchen concept is absolutely astounding with the whole spectacle happening right in front of your eyes (nothing to hide).
Expected pure traditional classic and rafinated Japanese Cuisine in a very charming atmosphere. And the cocktails are not astray from that.

On the way out I had the Honor to conversate and shake hands with The Master Chef Mr. Takuya Umeda whom wanted to thank us in person for visiting his amazing restaurant. A true gem of this city that could not be located any better than Melrose Street.

Undiscovered Gem! The $100 Omakase is worth at least 50% more. Easy to get a reservation for now... don't know how long that will last. In my book, equal to the best Japanese restaurants in the city, and I've been to all of them (Shunji, Asanebo, Zo, Q, etc.)

We waited 45 minutes for our food. The cut rolls were very mediocre but the sushi pieces were very good.

Sushi was remarkably average to bad. This is a place for rich people who just want to be at the right place on a Friday night but know nothing about sushi.
Chef Umeda creates flavor sensations out of what would seem to be standard sashimi and sushi ingredients. Now that it's fall, his omakase can include a delicious matsutake mushroom soup, recently he included a delicious crab miso soup as well. Even his small desserts (small is good, after all the course before them!) are each an explosion of flavors that are both familiar and taken up a notch (peach cobbler, chocolate mousse, and lychee sorbet.). You definitely get your money's worth!

Everything is fresh, delicious, and expertly made. The staff is super friendly and will help make modifications if you have any allergies. The ambiance is terrific as well.
We had a wonderful meal. Every dish was expertly prepared, beautiful to look at and scruptious. It was a very welcoming atmosphere. I highly recommend UMEDA.
This was one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time. Had sushi wagyu Black cod miso Tempura everything was outstanding. This restaurant is on par with the very best in Los Angeles Japanese restaurants. The quality of the fish is as good as it gets the wagyu was fantastic real Japanese beef Nice space good service excellent sake selection. Absolutely loved it can’t wait to go back.
There were only 3 tables occupied at the restaurant. It was essentially empty, yet the service was ridiculously slow. It took 30 minutes to get soup, and only after reminding the waiter. Overall the experience was tense, as the order kept getting messed up. The fish was very fresh, but portions were tiny for the price.
Would not come back, nor recommend it

28 mini bento box at lunch is a jewel box of amazing. Cannot understand how there is a line out the door for sushi spots at lunch and this place is 1/2 empty. This is my 4th time there and I keep being blown away!! Amazing.
My boyfriend took me here as an early celebration for my birthday. Firstly, our waiter was extremely courteous - telling us we could request switching a course in the dinner to something we see on the menu if desired and customizing my cocktail orders according to my taste. I always like trying something new so he was also helpful in that department when asking questions about foods or drinks (I also got 1 free birthday drink). Secondly, the bf and I both ordered from the Omakase Dinner Menu which features 3 choices, each with 8 courses. He got the Sushi no crazy decorations or ingredients that could take away from the authenticity of the food. I experienced a lot of "umami" flavors throughout my meal and the uni and wagyu just melted across my tongue. To describe the flavors I experienced here would do this place a disservice as I do not have the right vocabulary to do it justice. I highly recommend coming here for your next romantic meal (and if my bf having a dream about the wagyu days later doesn't peak your interest, then I suggest moving on}.

Three person family reunion. We wanted: excellent food, attentive but discrete service, quiet ambiance, comfort and relaxed atmosphere. This restaurant delivers that great experience every time!!
Menu was eclectic, disorganized with prices written in over whiteout. Restaurant was 1/3 full on a Saturday evening. Service was good. Food average.

The food is fresh, original, and excellent. The is a menu just for vegetarians, making it much easier to bring a variety of friends.

All the dishes were too salty that covered the original flavor of the fish And meat. Also, the waiter didn’t ask us about allergy on food that makes a seafood restaurant seemed not that professional.

It is entirely possible I ate here on an off day, and it is entirely possible that my tastes and expectations are different from others who have eaten here.
I really, really left disappointed. Despite being the first to arrive during lunch service, the restaurant slowly filled up around me and my dining companion and we had yet to place our order. There was only one server present and she seemed overwhelmed. It ended up that she took nearly every other table's order before she came back for us 30 minutes later.
We had to consistently flag her down to ask for a tea refill.
Our food came out slightly out of order (we both had a lunch combination).
My main course - jidori chicken with miso - was an abomination. Overcooked, cold, dry and bland. The sauce tasted like a haphazard combination of tabasco and yuzu.
The spicy tuna roll was nice but tiny.
The service was really the downfall of the dining experience, but the meal itself just wasn't memorable. I hope it was an off day, because I'd honestly rate this the most disappointing Japanese meal I've had in LA. There are so many other better options.
Truly inspired food. Great experience. Go! Make sure to get the tasting. Everything was a amazing but a standout was the lobster in a creamy sauce and the hamachi.
