Umaya elevates the typical 'beer garden' concept with hard-to-find Asian dishes. Our menu promotes friends, coworkers, family to enjoy their time together. We carry a wide array of Asian beer & Japanese Whiskey, complimenting the tranquility of the restaurant. The menu will feature seasonal highlights; however, the time-honored staples will always be available. ‘Umaya’ directly translates to a ‘place that tastes good’ in Japanese; it is a place where you can go

Tomato Veggie Ramen
tomato veggie broth with a western twist! served with cherry tomatoes, baby spinach, enoki mushrooms, bean sprouts and seasoned egg
The food was EXCELLENT!! From the octopus’s to the pork belly …. and please, let’s not forget the fried shrimp dumplings!! It seemed as though the waiter knew we loved food and gave us his best dishes!!
The restaurant was very cold and it was very bright.
Best sushi in the DC metro area! The food and service were on point!
This was a very pleasant surprise and exactly the kind of dinner I was looking for to bring in the new year. If you’ve ever been to any Tokyo bar or Izakaya type restaurants, then you’ll be happy to dine at Umaya. Except for the spacious dining room, this really felt authentic. The food was prepared fresh and brought out as they were ready. The karaage chicken was fried perfectly… light batter, crispy, non greasy, and flavorful moist chicken. The grilled squid was delicious with that ginger sauce. The spicy tuna was okay… not bad… but not over the top for me. We then had ramens for our “main” course. The spicy miso ramen was delicious and thiugh it was spicy, it was just enough heat. The amount of pork was a little scant, but it was delicious. The ramen egg too had a great flavor… it wasn’t just an ordinary soft boiled egg that most ramen places use. I want to also say that the hostess, who was also our waiter, was delightful. It was our first time and she was friendly, made some great recommendations, and came to check on us a few times. The prices were very reasonable as well.
Everything about Umaya was comforting and inviting, delicious and warm. If you want a true taste of Japan, go to Umaya. We can’t wait to return!
Great food but service was painfully slow.
Our waitress was great and was working her tail off!!
They were short staffed and she did a remarkable job handling all the tables.
Food was average. Disappointing
For the most part a very good experience. The host greeted us and wished my partner a happy birthday. We were seated and food came out at a good pace. The quality was very good, especially considering the price and portions. It wasn’t overly fussy so that was nice. The wait staff was a tad slow on getting the empty plates even though it wasn’t super crowded. However the nice touch of bringing my partner a birthday green tea mochi sandwich was sweet. The waiter even apologized for not having candles.
Considering the treatment at a more pricey and fussy restaurant for my birthday a few months ago, I commend this place. The host again wished my partner a happy birthday as we left. Sometimes small personal gestures mean a lot.
So when we walk in, we are told to stand apart from the next guest, and then use the hand sanitizer at the counter. There are maybe 5 tables occupied in the restaurant. Then we are seated directly next to a family table, nothing in between, and all these other tables in the restaurant, distanced from others, remain empty. This was contradictory and appalling. Other than that, the food was good. The Chesapeake roll is highly recommended. Delicious.
Not bad but so expensive.
The food was okay in general. The sushi was good (only had the mage tango) but the ramen wasn’t good, not home made noodles. The service was terrible. It was disrespectful and took much longer then other tables to get anything, an easy 20-25 minutes for drinks, then to order, then to get food, etc. we would be finished with eating or deciding to order for at least the 20 minutes before the server came by again. The noise was so loud, music and people talking much too loud for dinner and the lights were too bright. Also they had an Uber alert go off every 5 or so minutes externally loud and ear piercing.
The food was great. Because the place was under staffed our food was taking a while but the bartender was so kind to give us free shots.
We had a good time and they accommodated a nice booth for us!
I always enjoy eating at Umaya. Drink and food are always top-notch.
Quiet, friendly atmosphere. Amazing food with lots of variety.
Food was great, but the services was amazing. Our server was very Friendly, provided great information around wines and food and help us make the perfect pairing selection. Definitely coming back
Our family is from NYC and this place was not up to our standard. The place is loud from music and from people talking. It has bright spotlights in your face if you eat in the center of the restaurant (where they turn it as dance floor later in the night). The service was slow and the sushi are smaller than what we get in NYC places. The price were more expensive that our usual casual spot in NYC too. We will not go back to this Japanese place.
Great Place, good food. Thanks to inflation prices are higher
Long waits until our food was there. It took about 25 min to get our orders in and another half an hour to get 2 apps. 40 min from that point to get our main dish…. Food was good but the place is understaffed.
Authentic Japanese food. Yokitori and Sasumi are very fresh and well prepared.
My food didn’t come out until after my date finished eating and the check took forever too.
The signature drinks were ok, not very strong. But the food was great. We got a bunch of sushi rolls and each one was delicious.
Perfect, just perfect. As always. My server was Alex and he suggested a new dish, Fish and Chips with their Japanese twist. Let me tell you, perfectly battered/deep fried fish with cole slaw and those seaweed chips are just freaking tasty. The lamb chops were cooked to perfection and that mango sauce just perfected it. Some new Mezcal cocktails were tried and they were delicious and full of flavor. Alex did an amazing job with his suggestions and level of service. Just love this spot. Will be back soon.
Very delicious meals - try the Veggie Ramen and Beef & Fish skewers.
The food was good and ambiance somewhat noisy
I loved this experience! My family has some picky eaters but everyone got to eat things they loved!
Great service and server with great sushi!
The food was good. Service was alright.
We were the only people at Umaya on a Sunday morning. They sell a Chesapeake roll here that is just god-awful. Otherwise, the food was generally fine. This thing was just so foul that it is impossible to give a good review. Do not order this unless you want oceany-smelling, thick-paste crab taste with no soft-shell crab in it (despite it being offered as a soft-shell crab roll). Miso soup was great. Other sushi pieces were good but very small. They must do a great non-Covid, office-lunch business, but this place is just not good.
Food was great, as was our server but the pace of the food from the kitchen was off. Nothing for 45 minutes and then everything came at once. Robatayaki was tasty and the fish for the sushi was great. Will have to try the omakase next time. The ambience was ok, a little a sports bar and very loud.
Good food, but slow service. Make reservation in advance.
Great as always. Terrific staff and chef.
Corn on the cob was among the best I’ve ever had.
Pleasantly surprised how good the sushi was. Ordered uni to begin with and was very fresh.
Amazing experience. Missed this place
Highly recommend the autumn roll! Absolutely delicious.
