About this restaurant

  • Healthy
  • Neighborhood gem
  • Good for business meals
Umaya, where East meets West in a plethora of Japanese inspired small & large dishes. We focus on drawing from the simplicity of flavor in fresh ingredients, while giving it a Western flair. Specializing on the popular Japanese ‘street food’ - think small 'tapas' style dishes that are easy to share amongst friends & family. Our Izakaya grill features a one of a kind charcoal brick that is imported from Japan & allows for the natural flavors of the proteins & vegetables to radiate.

Umaya elevates the typical 'beer garden' concept with hard-to-find Asian dishes. Our menu promotes friends, coworkers, family to enjoy their time together. We carry a wide array of Asian beer, sake & Japanese Whiskey, complimenting the tranquility of the restaurant. The menu will feature seasonal highlights; however, the time-honored staples will always be available. ‘Umaya’ directly translates to a ‘place that tastes good’ in Japanese; it is a place where you can go

Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
Umaya offers "extremely fresh" food and "exceptional" service with attentive staff. Known for its "super fresh sashimi," it's a favorite in Penn Quarter. The cozy atmosphere and elegant decor enhance the dining experience. Dishes like pork belly are "tender and smoky." Overall, it's a "highly recommended" destination.

I had been wanting to try Umaya for a while. And then a friend suggested we go, as they also advertise a happy hour. Overall, it was fine. But that's about it. The place is spacious, but worn down a bit and our seats were a bit dirty (I cleaned off crumbs myself). The advertised happy hour apparently was only for the bar area (which isn't large), so we did not get to enjoy it (and I did see a group moving from their table to the bar to enjoy the tiny discount on the drinks). I did like the variety of food in the menu, and the prices were average for DC, though there are better options around. The food was good - but nothing outstanding - it was just fine. One of the robotayaki that I ordered - chicken liver - was a bit overcooked. They also messed up the dressing on my friend's poke salad, but when she noted it tasted strange, they immediately gave her a new salad and confirmed that the dressing was, in fact, screwed up before. The service was good, though they seem to be a bit short-staffed. I am not sure I'm interested in going back specifically for the food or atmosphere, but I would probably go back if it was a convenient place to meet.

Been a few months since my last visit. We were craving some sushi and skewers. Ordered a few of their specialty rolls. Dynamite and Volcano along with a bunch of skewers. We had the lamb, filet mignon, baby octopus, avocado (my favorite). Cooked to perfection. Antonio and Victor took great care of us and sent us a free dessert. Mochi ice cream. Just love this place, it was busy and the service was impeccable. Can never go wrong with Umaya. Thank you for another great night.

The food was amazing, and the service was great as well. I would definitely say this is my favorite spot in Penn Quarter. The sashimi is super fresh. I will be back soon!

Good food and good value. Restaurant was very big and lacked atmosphere. Not enough staff waiting tables so tough to get their attention - they seemed to do double duty - cocktails and waiting tables
