Our server made the experience most memorable. Highly recommend!!!
Restaurant is right by the water. Very beautiful.
The food list and description looked amazing and we were very excited to get a reservation and come here on our first night in Kona on our honeymoon. The ambience and service was amazing, so friendly and very good. The food did not meet our high expectations. The mahi mahi with yuzu butter was just alright, not bad, not great. The red snapper my partner got was delicious and more interesting. Their service and extra attention provided us with a nice time, but not sure I would recommend the food highly- not worth the value. They had an interesting night market menu - the pork belly bao was good, but could have had more toppings. We also ordered sake and the silent samurai sake was the best part of the evening. Highly recommend doing a sake flight to try the sake.
Really great overall. Service was kind and courteous, food was great and the setting is awesome! Best fine dining experience on the Big Island! Fun wine list with some crazy stuff as well as some fun finds.
We had an absolutely magical experience. The setting was beyond beautiful and the food was incredible. The service was professional and friendly. We were conservative in our ordering and kept our bill under $200 a person. There are hidden gems on the wine list if you know what to look for. Altogether, it was one of the best dinners I’ve had on the island.
Great anniversary experience!
I ordered the lobster and it was pretty pricey $97 . The was 2 oz of meat that was mushy . Very disappointed with the dish . Sushi was ok . Dessert was great and tasty .
Great food and ocean side seating. One of the best restaurants on the island. Creative chef, fresh fish/sushi and a nice wine and sake list.
Beautiful location with waves breaking just beyond the restaurant. Excellent service and focused menu. Prepare to pay lots for everything.
A usual favorite for us when visiting. The service is way above others and the food is irresistible. Had the sushi this time and it was super fresh and tasty.
Amazing food and view during dinner! The mahi mahi was absolutely delicious.
A special night for me. Thank you!
Exquisite dining, perfectly prepared food, most picturesque, excellent wait staff, elegant, zen, and beautiful grounds!
Great , as usual….
Meh. The service was not good. I’m assuming this is because they don’t pay people enough. Typical at fancy chains. Pay your workers enough to care about and take pride in their job!
The food was under salted. The hamachi crudo was amazing. The views are spectacular but I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant. I expected way more for the brand name and prices.
The service at this restaurant is phenomenal! Our waiter was very knowledgeable and had the best way ever to describe the food, texture, flavors, etc. Always a great experience at Ulu.
My boyfriend and I celebrated our third year anniversary here. They made our night even more special by giving us two delicious desserts on the house to help us celebrate. Our waitress was so sweet and the food was great. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening here and can’t wait to come back next time we visit the big island.
Every aspect of the experience was amazing accept the wait for a table even though I had reservation and my reservation was not honored. We waited for 45 min after reservation time, but that was not so much the disappointing part then the fact that others who arrived after us got sited before we did. However, the service was outstanding and made up for it.
We have been going to 'Ulu for years to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. The menu is always varied and delicious, the atmosphere unparalleled with ocean-side dining and excellent staff, and it is particularly accomodating to those that have food sensitivities or allergies. We have come away from each and every experience with absolute gratitude and special memories.
We loved our dining experience in this upscale waterfront restaurant.
The restaurant has a great beach location , however, for the price the food was just average.
Ulu is easily one of the most beautiful restaurants on Kona Island. There is seating right on the beach and the ambience is incredibly beautiful and romantic.
I did have issues with the reservation. When I made the reservation a week in advance, the only timeslot available was for a 9pm on the day I was looking at. I went ahead and booked it for that time. However, earlier in the day of my reservation, I received a call from the restaurant asking if I could come in at 8/8:30. I informed them that I would try my best, but I already planned my day with excursions so I could make it in time for the 9pm reservation.
I arrived closer to 9pm (my original reservation time), and then received a call from the restaurant stating that they could save my table for the next 15min, but the kitchen closes at 9:15pm. I became very upset for several reasons:
1) Why even open a dinner timeslot at 9pm, when the kitchen closes at 9:15pm?
2) Why didn't the hostess inform me of the kitchen closure when she called earlier that day?
The poor communication and logistical scheduling made me very upset since I scheduled this dinner as a date for my boyfriend and a belated birthday celebration for myself—I also had a sprained ankle at the time, which made it very difficult for me to rush to make this reservation on time and order before the kitchen closed.
I was incredibly stressed and frazzled upon arrival at the airport, and already had a poor impression of the restaurant. What saved them in my review was our amazing bartender Doug who was so incredibly understanding and accommodating of our situation when the restaurant poorly managed our reservation. He was incredibly personable, friendly and kind and really elevated our experience at the restaurant.
The food itself was nothing too memorable and again my initial impression disdained by faulty scheduling, Doug and the beautiful views of the restaurant really compensated for its shortcomings.
What a dream to be on the beach, hearing waves crash as you enjoy the creative and classic menu choices. A nice selection of wines and sake. This was our third time, here. Dreaming of returning.
Best restaurant! Food, ambiance, service. I loved it all!
It was fantastic. The best sushi we have ever had. Service was perfect.
The food was delicious and we were steps away from the beach.
Had a wonderful dinner at Ulu, the ambience and food was amazing. The food portions were perfect and the waitress was knowledgeable.
The Mahi Mahi is excellent. My husband had the steak and he said it was the best he's ever had. We had an amazing dinner, so great we went 2 nights in a row. The service was superb !!
Great waiter. Nice setting. Great food.
Very satisfying experience
Excellent service. Loved the mahi-mahi and chicken dishes. Priceless evening
The attention to service was worth the price of dinner. Food was beautifully prepared and presented. We had mahi and snapper. The choc soufflé was worth every calorie!
Our server was impeccable and recommended most of our meal with perfection. He also did a perfect job of letting us enjoy every moment there without being rushed. Everything at ULU was top notch. If you’re going to the Big Island this is a must dining experience.
Everything was exquisite!!!! Soooo romantic and the most amazing sushi and entrees.
Waited over an hour for my main course (steak) that never did show up despite repeated assurances it would only be a few more minutes. Ended up cancelling the order. Very disappointing as we were celebrating my birthday.
Excellent staff and food
The food was extraordinary! Peanut/turmeric snapper--the best!! Delicious desserts!
Couldn't ask for a more beautiful setting--right on the beach.
Sunday, my wife and I had dinner at Ulu's for the first time since the pandemic; Ulu's had just re-opened the week before. Thankfully, nothing has changed! The menu, food and service were all outstanding. Ulu's was and still is the best fine-dining experience on the Big island. However, Ulu's is probably the most expensive restaurant on the Big Island and they do not offer kama'aina discounts.
The lighting was terrible. We couldn’t see our food. We asked for better lighting and they gave us 3 cheap plastic candles that didn’t even emit much light. They didn’t offer to move us to another table, although there were other tables open. I had to hold a plastic candle in one hand with my fork in the other to see the food while I was eating. The noodles in the crab noodles was the same consistency as top ramen or other instant ramen. Our waitress got our order wrong so we ordered too much food. At the end, my friend spoke to the manager. The waitress came back and was not apologetic and made excuses for our concerns instead. This restaurant did not seem to be of the caliber of a fine dining restaurant that were looking forward to. Probably will not return anytime soon. There are other fine dining options out there that will be more worth your money for both food and experience.
