Trattoria Il Panino
and back of the house form a desirable marriage. The entrance on 260 Hanover street has a full liquor license.
The food here was off the charts!! Everything was amazing. No wonder there was a line out the door!! Good thing we had an Open Table reservation!
My husband and I went to Trattoria Il Panino on Saturday for dinner. If you want the SparkNotes version... the food was excellent, but the service was poor.
We had a reservation, but there was a short line out the door which wasn't moving. We didn't get to speak to a hostess until 10 minutes after we arrived! Not okay. When we finally sat down, we were seated in the basement. The atmosphere upstairs was fine, but the basement was dark and dingy. We didn't even have a candle on our table, and it was very difficult to read the menu (we're in our 20s, and we have good eyesight, so it was definitely the restaurant not us).
I feel like we barely saw our waiter. He put bread down (which was DELICIOUS by the way, like some of the best bread we've ever had), we ordered drinks, and then it was a very long time until we saw our waiter again. My husband ordered his usual drink, a French martini, and no one knew what it was. My glass of wine was delivered to our table at least 10 minutes before his drink arrived. I will say I give the waitstaff props for carrying the martini down the stairs.
I'm dairy free, and I feel like the waiter was far from helpful. The menu definitely isn't paleo friendly, everything has cheese! I ended up ordering the Paccheri al Ragú, and opted for no cheese. It was so good! The homemade pasta was to die for, and the meal was very tasty. The food was really REALLY good. My husband got the Spaghetti Carbonara which he also really enjoyed.
We won't be back, due to the poor service, but the food was excellent.
Great food and excellent service. We were surrounded by several large groups so the noise level was very loud. I would return however because the homemade pasta was excellent.
We love this place! Great food and friendly servers!
This place is not bad but our seating was in an area that would have been outdoors except for the plastic rollup windows. No heaters on a cool evening, even the wait staff were wearing coats.
Tino was outstanding taking care of us and the veal shank and pasta were fantastic.
Such a wonderful meal! The food was amazing! Will definitely be going back there!
I would say this restaurant was good, not great. Portions are extremely generous. Can be a bit noisy. Service was decent.
Food was very good, as usual. It was just disconcerting that the hostess was outright rude to us about having a big group, after we reserved the table about 2 weeks in advance; didn’t have the table ready until 20 minutes after we arrived (everyone was present less than 5 minutes after the reservation), because there was a mix-up with another big group; then, after 1.5 hours, told us people were waiting for our table after we had signed the check about 5 minutes before (wouldn’t you say a 1.5 hour dinner with a big group was mighty fast?). Waiter: very patient and pleasant. Food and drinks on time. They even watched our bags for us as we were going to the airport after. But holy mole, when’s the last time you were literally told to get out after being seated for 70 minutes in the North End? What about telling the four families with little kids playing on iPads to move along? What about telling the 14 couples splitting entrees and not paying a guaranteed 20% gratuity to move along? From an economic standpoint and from a moral standpoint and from an aesthetic standpoint, what is the hostess getting frazzled about with us? I know the Red Sox lost last night but the series is still 1-1.
I went here on a recent trip to Boston and it ended up being a great choice!
The food (Primavera and Carbonara) was great and a pretty good deal for the large portions. Also, there were plenty of reasonable wine-by-the-glass options. They didn't have dessert when I went, but the waitress was super friendly and recommended specific pastries at Modern Pastry down the street for dessert.
The service when we were being seated wasn't great (we had a reservation and others who had just walked in ended up getting seated before us) but it wasn't a big deal and that's pretty typical of an authentic, bustling restaurant. Overall good experience!
So yum the lobster ravioli was incredible highly recommend- make sure to make a reservation
Food was meh and servers were overwhelmed. The restaurant was definitely popular and hopping. But I would pick a different mid-priced Italian restaurant in the north end.
Awesome food. Great service
Delicious, authentic Italian food. Would definitely recommend!
Went there based on Yelp. Fantastic food and atmosphere. In the heart of the North End. Server was knowledgeable and quickly adapted to our style. Highly recommended.
Great meal for children and adults.
We had reservations and were seated promptly but not outside as requested. Service was underwhelming. A basket of bread was thrown at us and when we asked for butter we got 2 pieces. The waiter was not attentive at all. Never checked on our meal or asked if we wanted refills or dessert. Food was just ok. The ceaser salad tasted like vinegar with store bought dry croutons. My entree was $35 with very little seafood and tiny shrimp and the lobster was the smallest I have ever seen.
Don’t understand the ratings.not going back. Also let them know it was our anniversary and never a mention.
As usual, they don’t disappoint
Visiting from Minneapolis, we were directed to Il Panino by a friend who'd lived in the North End for a year or so... and well worth the visit!
Our party of 6 consisted of 2 senior citizens, 2 vegetarians and 2 interested in wine... and everyone was delighted with the evening.
Our waiter, David, was incredibly helpful, attentive and a true delight to spend the evening with. He directed the vegetarians to several options, and even went off the menu and provided them with a "chefs choice" as an antipasto.
The mushroom ravioli (David's recommendation) was the highlight of the menu. We ordered as an antipasto and it was OUTRAGEOUSLY good!
We are planning on returning in May and will certainly put Il Panino on the top of the list for Must Do.
The food was excellent from the appetizers to the main meal.
We just loved this place! Can’t wait to go back next time we are in town. Shrimp appetizer delicious. Grilled lamb chops amazing! Great waiter.
Great service, very good food. The Sangiovese red wine was excellent!!
Outstanding, this place never lets us down. The quality of food, the staff, the atmosphere. Always a pleasure and a must whenever we are in Boston
Very busy and rather rushed. Also noisy. Good if you’re in a boisterous group!
Both meals were good, they had great taste to them. There were several dishes that I wanted, but could not really decide. So in that situation I generally just go with a lasagna. It was good, it just had a different sauce than I am use to based on the two Italian places near my house.
The wife ordered the Chicken Parmagina and enjoyed the dish completely.
Never disappoints! Love this place
Loud. Post prandial stomach ache. Nothing special. Better Italian food at home in Des Moines
Wonderful food, had the chicken parmigiana and mama Raghu pasta. Generous portions. Place gets packed, recommend reservations. We went to the one on Hanover. There’s a smaller location on Parmenter St around the corner. Looks cozier and less frentic, will try that one next time.
Service was poor from the start. This establishment refused dessert for our group and then we watched dessert served to another table. There were only poor excuses as to why no dessert was served on a Sat. In inquiring why, we were dealt with rudely and ultimately, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. We spent a large amount of money for our party of six - none of us have ever been dealt with so rudely!
Very disappointing . Hostess was extremely rude . Sauce and meatballs were flat . Would not go back
Food was very good. Service was a little slow and we sensed they wanted us to pack up and go once we decided no on dessert - they only offered one dessert choice and we didn't want tiramisu. However, there was a feast in the North End so it was busy and there were lines waiting to get in so they probably wanted more open tables. You won't go wrong trying this place - there are so many restaurants to try and this one is an average choice.
The service was terrific and the good was good. We would be happy to go again
We were erroneously given an extra starter which we returned. However, same was charged in the bill
Our favorite place to go! It was our first date, and we go their every time we have something to celebrate! Our favorite Italian food in all of Boston!
Excellent dinner with a very personable and helpful server. The best sauce I have ever had.
Our waiter was charming and did an excellent job, the food was excellent, as was the wine. I would have preferred not to sit downstairs beside a large and VERY loud group but I guess that was just our bad luck.
With all the choices for authentic Italian food in Boston’s North End, we had a hard time deciding on a restaurant. Selecting Trattoria Il Panino, though, was absolutely the right choice. We started with the eggplant appetizer and it was the best eggplant I’ve ever had, served in a sauce that had me wanting to lick the plate. Our entrees also did not disappoint. My dining partner had lasagna and I had a hearty pasta in a meat sauce. It was heaven! Cannot give this place enough stars!
Meals we had were excellent. Waiter was very friendly
Amazing homemade pasta! Lively atmosphere. Generous portions
