Cooking food closest to his heart has earned him rave reviews including James Beard nominations in 2014, 2015 and a finalist in 2016 and 2019.
Great experience for New Years Eve dinner! The ambience is cool and the wine pairing was delicious. Too bad it is closing soon! Definitely check it out before it leaves.
When we were there we found out they were closing in 3 days (per our phone). The waitstaff did not mention as I assume they were asked not too. Besides that, the menu was tiny. I was excited to try the boudin (they were out). I got a hot sausage sandwich (expecting link style) and it was like a burger patty. It was good, but not great. My kids got the chicken sandwich (the best choice- very similar to Popeye’s current popular chicken sandwich) and the BLT (bacon was very thick so it was chewy versus crunchy- like beef jerky). It wasn’t very expensive. It was very rich food- which was what I expected from a meat oriented place. I will try the other location. I’ve heard the chef/owner is great and it’s a favorite in New Orleans so I just think it was just a bad time to go to this location. They are closed permanently now (Monday last day?). The waiter was very friendly- so I wish him luck finding a new job or going to the other location.
Such a different style menu would flavor bursting in every bite. Thanks to social media for helping me find this place.
The food was wonderful! Sitting at the counter to watch the “show” was amazing! Can’t wait to go back!!!!
Came in for game day brunch during quiet afternoon hours. Always a pleasant time here!
Do you believe you can taste the love in food? If you don’t just wait until you eat here! I loved sitting at the bar and watching the chef cook! Ever bite of food we had was amazing! I highly recommend the octopus and the special that day was lobster ravioli and man it did not disappoint!
Very creative twist on New Orleans dishes! We ate until we could no longer eat. Great food awesome service, definitely worth traveling out of the french quartier for. We will be back.
I thought this was Isaac Toups' premier restaurant, but now I hope it is not. Place was really quiet on a Saturday night. Service was inattentive, slow and waiter did not know the menu. Dinner was hugely disappointing: All the food is literally brown and mushy, just boring stuff, and nothing fresh or green or exciting on the menu. I was very disappointed, because I like the Meatery, but I would have to recommend that you avoid this spot.
The food is absolutely delicious; atmosphere in the room not so much. Our reservation was for 1 p.m. on a Saturday, and when we arrived it seemed like the two cooks and two wait staffers had just awoken. Perhaps it is more lively at dinner, but this would not be a return for us on a Saturday for lunch.
Toups South was such a pleasant experience for us. Since we were there early evening during Thanksgiving weekend, the crowd was light and noise was not a problem. The attention we received was perfection as was the meal. After excellent cocktails at the cozy, comfortable bar we decided to sit at the counter that surrounds the large, immaculate kitchen brimming with containers of gorgeous fresh vegetables. This was a great decision as it was fascinating to watch Chef Lambert and staff prepare our wonderfully delicious food. The flavors in all the dishes were complex yet distinct and absolutely fresh. We shared a small plate featuring scallops, prosciutto, radishes and cilantro oil. We had a very smoky beautiful redfish sauce piquant and French bread generously slathered with crab fat butter and perfectly fried okra. Also on our menu were garlic charred shrimp which actually took a back seat to the braised black eyed peas. We don't know what they did to those peas but they elevated them to a very high level and we highly recommend them. However, beware! They are probably addictive! A chow chow relish garnish rivaled any my mama ever made. Then there was dessert. Yes, really. The carrot cake had no chance next to the creamy concoction from heaven topped with spicy apples and cornbread crumbles. I can't believe we ate the whole thing! We can't wait to dine at Toups South again. Everything about our visit was superlative. In full disclosure, we were honeymooning but I don't think that influenced our perception. At least, not much! :)
Had the spicy lamb Po boy and the Bone in Pork chop stack. Both were prepared beautifully and flavorful.
We had a great time as always.
Great service- waiter had good suggestions
Well prepared food. The fried chicken sandwich was excellent and certainly better than any fast food version. Crab appetizer was great.
Great spot for large groups. Very accommodating and awesome food. Loved the ambiance with the open kitchen. Highly recommend the fried chicken sandwich!
Went there pre-Saints-Falcons debacle this past Sunday. I love properly cooked octopus. The barbequed octopus with grits was fantastic. Octopus was very tender and had great flavor. The buttermilk fried chicken sandwich was awesome as well. Chicken was crispy and sized right. Sauces with the sandwich were good as well. I'll be back.
Brunch before the saints game, was fantastic
Had a wonderful experience with a large group of friends
The staff was very helpful with great suggestions. The mimosas were perfect, not watered down or too strong.
A must go to for Brunch. Boudin burritos, Hot Sausage Sandwich and Only on Sunday Cinnamon Rolls were awesome!
Ask for a kitchen seat. The chefs were so friendly to us.
Food was great, service was good as well. Location, while off the beaten track, was very cool and restaurant had unique atmosphere. Certainly recommended.
Amazing food and drinks. Open kitchen themed - recommend eating at the bar. Only to chefs - so the timing and food is masterful. Server wasn’t personable - which goes against NOLA culture. Don’t love the side table booth. I’ve come to Nola and made TOUPS Meatery or South a must visit.
Always go. Always share with others once you love it.
Food was AMAZING. Service was phenomenal! A bit pricey but worth it!
Toups South was very good, but not as good as the best restaurants in New Orleans, even though it is just a little cheaper than them. The desserts were so-so, several of the main dishes were good but not great, appetizers were excellent, the steak was excellent. The best thing was the wine list. it is not incredibly extensive but it includes a number of interesting and different selections, all of them at very reasonable prices relative to the norm.
My family and I were very pleased with our meal and service. The waiter suggested the cracklings and they were amazing!!!
Food was great! Music way too loud. Service very good. Easy parking. Bar service really nice...
Great service. Delicious food. Toups South was a great dining experience for our first time in New Orleans.
Biscuits and salads were the best part of the meal, and that should not be the case for this type of spot. Diners complained that the red fish was both blackened and overspicy. My grilled octopus over grits did not need so much roux, and just was not very interesting in spite of the big tentacles. biggest disappointment was their version of a julep that had waaaaay to much shaved ice (trying to be a snoball?) but instead gave me little sense of an alcoholic drink. I had to take the ice out for any enjoyment. Poorly conceived.
Birthday! It was perfect! Food was amazing.
Great food and service.
Really creative menu and the food wasn’t bad just didn’t quite reach the level we’d expect from the descriptions and the price. In any smaller city this would be a great restaurant, in New Orleans it’s just ok
I had the Sept special- shrimp and grits with the vegetable salad, and my spouse had the French dip. He said his sandwich was good, not great, and the onion rings were too salty to even eat. My vegetable salad was a strange mix of lettuce, black eyed peas, cold fried okra and peaches with no discernible dressing or spices. Not good. I got three shrimp with my grits - really?? Just three! Also too salty for my taste. We were two of six people dining so meal should have been better!!!
Great place. Cooked a dish not on the menu for me. Everything was great! Food, top notch. Only downside was maybe a little pricey. No complaints.
We went for dinner on a weeknight and it was slow. The service was amazing - great, personable server who was super awesome about sharing things to see and do in the city. The food was creative- the flavors did go together. The food did taste very good. But I didn’t leave sated. I left and even after ordering several dishes, I left hungry. The food was good, but the service is better.
Fantastic and creative menu and delivers with taste & presentation WOW
We had the fixed price, three course dinner. Delicious and a really good value.
As a local who dines out very often, I put this restaurant in 1st place for quality of the meal, with both creative and traditional South La dishes. The flavors are intense using fresh, local ingredients.
Counter seating offers a great view of the kitchen. Well curated wine selection & perfect cocktails.
It's not a formal, polished silver place but it's impressive and fun, and you will have a meal as good or better than anywhere else in this restaurant-obsessed city. You can likely get a table so do not stand in line somewhere else!
This was my first visit and I was blown away ! The restaurant is spacious and beautiful. The pace of service was perfect while my friend and I chatted away. We were never rushed nor waiting. The food was delicious and definitely had a kick to it. I had a wonderful time !
