Top Roe is a Yōshoku Japanese restaurant located in the heart of Downtown Austin, Texas coming from the creative culinary mind of Executive Chef Paul Qui offering two experiences under one roof: Top Roe Handroll and Top Roe Izakaya.

Top Roe's Handroll counter is a 12-seat counter serving fresh handrolls, which are exclusively offered at the handroll counter to preserve the quality of each ingredient, as they should be enjoyed. Expect a quicker dining experience of about 45 minutes: tasty bites to start your night! We also offer select small bites from the izakaya menu.

Top Roe's Izakaya menu offers an extended menu and dining experience to it's handroll counterpart. Here you'll find our signature Tuna Toro Steak and Wagyu steaks, along with delicious Yakimonos (grilled dishes), Agemonos (fried dishes), Sashimis, Salads, and more.

When you first walk in, there’s an off-putting smell that’s impossible to ignore. However, I didn’t smell it once we were sat. Our table was ready on time, the staff was warm and attentive, and the food was delightful. I’ll likely return.

The music is a bit loud, especially near the sushi bar area. It would make for a better experience turning it down.

The seating arrangements/ order of how people are placed could be optimized. There was a table of 3 sets of couples who didn’t know each other sitting together and several open tables with 2 seats for majority of our dinner. There were also pairs sitting at large tables which didn’t make sense when 6 people were lumped together.

Not sure if junior or rude wait staff; but I found the service very underwhelming. Felt rushed and inattentive. Good place so maybe evaluate your staff a bit

I actually wasn’t able to even dine at Top Roe. Apparently they had maintenance issues, which is fine, but I expected a notification from either the restaurant or Open Table, which I got neither.

We always enjoy Paul Qui's restaurants, and the originality in the menu. Top Roe was no exception. We've visited twice now and were overall pleased. Our second visit found some items as sold out or unavailable early in a weekday seating, but plenty of great options.

Sat at the bar. Ordered a crunch tuna-good, chicken karaage-good, fried oysters-good. Ordered two drinks got one. Service was ehhh!! Won’t be sitting at the bar again, this reservation was spur of the moment.

Fantastic birthday dinner! Sat at the bar, and had the amazing Brian (Bryan?) pick from the menu for us. Best idea! Everything was absolutely wonderful. Hamachi, and the Wagyu short rib served with the hot stone were a couple favorites, but everything was perfectly done. Cocktails were on point! Great to see Paul back on the scene (and busting his butt in the kitchen!), and with such great success. Will definitely return to Top Roe!
