Taco Tuesday food was mediocre at best. Over salted to the point of being inedible. Bar staff were lovely. Waste of money.
Other than tots food was below average. Service was just ok.
The service here was pretty good and the food is average. However, there are good tots.
My server, Ryan, was excellent. The food was great as well. I’ve been here many times over the years and it never fails.
Stopped in for late brunch. They could have had more salads, but I decided on a burger. Good variety in the burger menu, though most come with cheese.
My burger was excellent! I had a side salad.
I also had their Tonic G&T with house-made tonic syrup. This was excellent, not a typical G&T.
It was a bit on the noisier side, with a very young crowd.
The service was horrible and I know that everyone is short staffed due to Covid. We had to get our own utensils and after asking for more drinks not once but twice I finally gave up and just choked down the food and left!
Great brunch experience. Delicious food and good service.
We've had problems with our orders being done right here before, but this time (primarily due to our waiter), everything was fine. Appreciate the heaters in the screened in porch. Had an excellent impossible burger and others had a very good pizza. Never felt rushed.
Good food, slightly slow service.
The often local go-to-spot especially for short-notice connects with business partners. Hostess couldn't find my reservation initially, she was somewhat "numb" and non-reactive to the fact until I showed her my phone and the OpenTable reservation. Waiter responded to every ask in a timely and friendly manner. I was looking forward to having pizza (have had it before) for lunch however was disappointed. What I received was something that tasted like a frozen pizza, specifically the crust, a huge disappointment. Will I go here again, for sure...again, it's close and convenient for short-notice business partners. Will I get the pizza again, NO....more than likely will order a beverage and maybe their famous toots.
Good venue for bar food with a college vibe. Prices are good and service good. Good accommodation for COVID.
The good news: the tots are money. That’s it. Everything else was just okay. Not bad (mac and cheese is pretty bad). Not great. And that might have been totally forgivable, but the service was pretty awkward too. We had a water spill, and no other staff wanted to help. We used our own napkins…and eventually our server came back to help. She grabbed an apron to clean the floor? I asked for more napkins—3 times. Eventually I was brought a stack of bev naps. Here’s my best guess: the restaurant is on 2 floors, and nobody wanted to run down those steps if they could avoid it. And the place closed at like 9 pm? So definitely dialing it in at the end.
Their Happy Hour was reasonably priced and the food was perfect. The tots were really next level.
Great food and lots of outdoor space. Wish the regular lunch menu was available on weekends too - not all of us want only brunch!
The atmosphere was great. The food was excellent but the service was very slow--our server was very courteous but food took too long to come out.
Great spot. Very attentive service and good food.
Good food. Prices were a little much. $120 for 3 (1 kid) for tater toes, and a couple sandwiches. Charged $6 full price for a strawberry lemonade when it was put in a kids cup and basically got half of what I would have gotten. Waited close to 20 mins for our check after 3 requests because our waitress was given a 20 tip and nobody helped her. Took us almost 2 hrs to eat when arriving at 4:40pm
If you're looking for a fun spot for a casual meal, a snack or a drink Tonic is for you. The food is simple, fresh and beautifully executed. Trying the tots is is a must but the rest of the menu is fabulous too. The pork belly Mac & Cheese is to die for! The service was off the charts good - thank you, Elizabeth! Prices are great, the space is spotless. What more could you want! We'll be back again and again.
Our waiter was amazing and sitting outside was so lovely.
Good location and atmosphere. Tater tots outstrip anything else on the menu.
Love the food, our waiter seemed overwhelmed and they only had one person waiting on the entire inside seating and bar. So service wasn't great but that wasn't fully his fault. Took a while to get waited on and took a while for checks, but food service was fast and it was delicious! The bernie wings are my favorite.
Seemed over-hyped. Everyone seemed to rave about the tots but our party found them to be just average. Also, we were told reservations were required but it was 2:00 in the afternoon and there were multiple empty tables. This could have been due to a staff shortage but there appeared to be many hostesses and servers.
Our happy hour experience at Tonic was great! $5 drinks, including a good savignon blanc. I loved the Veggie Out pizza. My friend with celiac could eat a gluten free pizza. My other friends liked their salmon caesar salad and burger.
Good happy hour specials and lots of outdoor seating. Friendly staff and great overall atmosphere.
Great ambiance, food was very good. The taco salad was excellent. Nice neighborhood bar feeling.
The tater tots were great. The Pulled Pork sandwhich was ok not stellar. The Fried Chicken Sandwhich was solid!
Very good gluten free wings and service was great!
Casual dining, good food and service. Portions are larger and some items could be shared.
Very good. It is a busy place. Tasty burger. My kids love their Mac and Cheese
Wish they had both lunch and brunch options for the early afternoon. Our reservation was at 12 and the tots we wanted weren’t available because it was still considered brunch time when we went. Other than that, the outdoor seating was amazing and our server was friendly and accommodating.
great place, walkable to the kennedy center. Yummy food, good prices, excellent service. great outdoor seating.
Tonic is a fine restaurant on GWU's campus. Keep up the good work!
Food was good, however, multiple servers passed our table after we were seated and not one of them greeted us. After 10 minutes, I had to ask who our waiter was and if we could order drinks and food. This was lunch time and they were not busy when we were first seated.
Covid or no Covid, there were plenty of waitstaff. Please train your waitstaff to bring water and greet a table within 5 minutes after they are seated. I don't think that's an unreasonable expectation.
The server who did eventually take our table was pleasant and friendly.
Excessive delay getting seated Minimal service with no physical menus. Limited ability to ask questions regarding food choices. Avoid if first time visitors.
A great local spot that caters to local government employees and the nearby university. Good food at a solid value, especially for DC. I love the casual vibe and the service is solid, even with the difficulties in getting staff these days. Highly recommend reserving a table in advance, since they can get super busy, especially on peak days/times.
Nice Restaurant with lovely terrace outdoor protected seating, superbly located in the heart of Foggy Bottom, and GW (The George Washington University), diagonally across from Monroe Hall. Parking challenging but solvable. Good student / University vibe.
We made a reservation weeks ahead of time to celebrate our college-age daughter’s birthday with her friends. We also called ahead of time about the policies for bringing your own cake.
When we arrived, we were told that the only available table for us was very close to the jazz band playing and that it might be loud. We took it and it was loud. To Tonic’s credit, a short time after we were seated, they offered us another table in a different quieter area, which was much better.
The food was decent, but our sense was that the servers were brand new and weren’t sure what they were doing.
I communicated with the staff about the cake during the meal since they hadn’t reached out to me even though I had spoken with them when I brought the cake in before the guest of honor arrived. At the appointed time, 2 servers delivered the cake in the box, with no candles and no singing. It was literally the worst restaurant birthday celebration I have ever seen. They also charged a $25 cake fee, which we were told about and were happy to pay, but we thought we’d get a little more festivity for our money.
The bottom line is that I would not recommend Tonic for a special occasion. It is much more suited to a drink and an appetizer.
I get that the service industry is short-staffed and our waitress truly did her very best; however, that is no explanation for the poor quality of the food.
Drink orders: Ten minutes after order, waitress returned to inform husband they did not carry Stoly's Vodka. Even longer to receive Titos and Club.
Club soda for me: no straw, little ice.
I ordered a burger. What could go wrong? STALE bun and tasteless/unseasoned, dry meat. Awful. Salt shaker contained a cube of salt, as it was left in humidity all summer from the looks of it.
Hubby had pulled pork platter: scoop of BBQ pork, small square of cornbread (that did somewhat absorb the pat of butter), small dish of lukewarm mac & cheese, and the crowning glory...ONE onion ring.
