About this restaurant

  • Innovative
  • Great for happy hour
  • Charming
Tonari is our Wafu Italian restaurant. WAFU means Japanese-style, so our menu is a Japanese take on Italian food. It originated in Japan through the love that the Japanese had for Italian food but wanted to incorporate some of their cultural flavors and ingredients to them. We at Daikaya Group and chef & owner, Katsuya Fukushima, are bringing this experience to you here in DC.

Looking for some fun Japanese antipasti bites, one of a kind pasta dishes, or pizza that you won't find anywhere else in the city? Then come join us for dinner, we look forward to having you soon.

Service and food were amazing! Loved the garlic bread and the pasta with alligator meat! The meatball bao bun was such a fun fusion of Italian and Japanese!

Pizza is light and airy unlike any I have ever had. Made with Japanese flour which gives it a completely different texture! Place is quaint and staff was very attentive. Definitely will be back to try the pasta.

Food was good, server was good. But we left with a sour taste when the host approached my table an hour and twenty minutes after we sat down, and less than 5 minutes after we paid our check, to tell me that he needed me to vacate the table in the next 3 minutes because he had another reservation. There was no prominent warning about how long we had the table for. (I've never been anywhere that has a seating that lasts less than 1:30 in any event.) And we would have been done 20 minutes earlier had they not been so slow about serving us our dessert. Just made the whole experience less enjoyable.

So glad we found this place! We had the mentaiko and original pizzas and both were flavorful and delicious. We also tried the garlic bread which was fantastic. Drinks were strong and interesting. We decided we need to come back to try the pasta next! Thanks for a wonderful meal!
