We had a wonderful dinner! The server was excellent and the food and ambiance is always so lovely. We always try to have dinner here when we are in town and recommend the place to others.
Waiter had zero personality. Told us the specials and then said he better go check in case something had changed. Seriously, our reservation was at 5:15 we were the only table in the room at the time with guests. He never asked any of the ladies at the table if we cared for another glass of wine, however he did ask the gentlemen. Just crazy! Never was offered coffee after dinner, even tho he did offer dessert. My husbands steak was involved in an “incident on the stairs” (thats how it was stated to us) and unfortunately he had to wait and watch while the rest of ate and they made him another ribeye. They took his meal off the bill which was at their discretion, we did not ask and that was very good of the manager. It was less than par and we were slightly disappointed as we did have a guest with us that had never been there before.
Our waiter was outstanding and did a great job catering to our needs. The food was good, but not great for the price. My wife ordered a steak medium, but it came back rare. The center was dark red and unappetizing to her. My ribeye was cooked as requested, but had a lot of fat in it. Was not expecting a Ruths Chris quality steak, but better then I received from the kitchen.
Fantastic food and service! Will definitely be back. Creme brûlée was AMAZING!!
Luv the atmosphere at Tippecanoe place!! Always fun to visit. Even got to ride the elevator!!
Tippecanoe Place is a lovely restaurant. We have enjoyed many wonderful holiday lunches and business lunches here as well as 2 baby showers. I will always recommend this restaurant . It is special. We had a birthday lunch for 4 there yesterday. The food was tasty but the service was just fair. It was almost empty at Noon but it took us longer than expected to get our food...longer than it takes at Christmas when the place is packed! The good thing is we had a chance to talk so it didn't make a whole lot of difference. Our server was pleasant and helpful when asked a couple questions. All in all, it was a nice lunch and enjoyable as well.
We enjoyed the Sunday brunch this past week. We arrived for our 1:00 pm reservations and were seated in the solarium. The food was excellent-second to none. We felt like royalty in the service we were given in all areas. The only small negative would be the dessert selection. But, all in all, it was a very enjoyable Sunday brunch.
Food was very average. Service was great. Location beautiful, but the food was very bland.
Was a great place sunday brunch was awesome will definitely go back soon
Love it, but I would visit more often if they were more reasonable on their prices.
Tippecanoe Place is magnificent and it's an experience. If you're going to be in South Bend you must try it. I was here 30 years ago and remember it as a top flight restaurant, the height of elegance. In 2020 we were going to celebrate my Dad's 80th birthday, and he was traveling 600 miles to visit me in South Bend. I noted on my reservation that this was a special occasion and called the night before to make sure they knew that and could do something special. They said I had to tell the server to put a candle on the free dessert they'd give us. I had hoped for something more (happy to pay for it) but that was all they could do. Okay, not a problem. Then we arrive and they take us upstairs and seat us in a room that had four tables and felt like a space between two elegant rooms. This room had chairs that were barely holding together. Barely. My sister went and spoke to the manager to say this was just unacceptable. We were really surprised that they were not able to recognize a special occasion, and had chairs that were this absurdly falling apart. They did switch us to a booth that was in the bar, so there were TVs playing sports. Not exactly elegant, but we had a great time with very good food and our server was excellent and did her best to make up for this. And at least we didn't feel like our chairs were about to collapse. I was really surprised that such a great restaurant wasn't able to provide a better experience. It is such a gorgeous place that it's definitely worth going there, but I would either temper expectations or be ready to push for a better table/better chairs/better service because if you don't you may not have a great experience.
Hi Stacy, Thank you for your input on your experience with us. I apologize about the lack of care that was put into your father's birthday celebration. I am happy to hear that your server was able to turn your evening around for you. We are in the process of revamping the mansion beginning with new chairs, yay!! I would like to send you a gift letter so we may have a second chance to wow you with what is usually top notch service from the moment you walk in until you leave.
The services and the food were excellent. I cannot recall the last time I enjoyed a meal in a restaurant like that. We used the coupon for one free brunch, this made it more affordable.
Thank you for the kind words! We very much appreciate you coming in and that you enjoyed yourself!
The receptionist had attitude which I did not appreciate. The waiter brought the checks before even ask us if we wanted any desert...I had the chicken oscar and it was dry. Last time we were disappointed also. So sad because it is a very special place.
Poorly taken care of...chairs were about to come apart.
Food was pre-made packaged crap
Tippecanoe is a beautiful history place. The people managing and serving are wonderful. The brunch buffet was very good. However the roast beef was too chewy and the barbecued chicken was overcooked and dry.
We loved the self guided tour! We look forward to coming back.
We had a wonderful brunch with incredible service and a beautiful restaurant. Always a pleasure to dine at Tippecanoe.
The food was delicious and the wait staff was great
Food was nothing special & the house needs a lot of updating
Good evening, Thank you for your feedback. We are actually in the process of updating some things in the mansion. We would love to have you back once the process is complete as we are very excited! Have a great evening!
We were there for a family birthday dinner. The ambience in this old and beautiful mansion cannot be beat. Woodwork, fireplaces with marble surrounds, gorgeous flooring, the ornate staircase, and multiple rooms all decorated with antiques make this a one-of-a-kind experience. If historical landmarks aren’t your thing, you won’t appreciate the beauty of this grand house, but if you have any sense of imagination, you’ll love sitting down to dine and thinking about what it would have been like to be a wealthy family at the turn of the century. We had a variety of entrees including prime rib, filet, scallops, salmon. No one was disappointed. Salads were fresh—tell them to go light on the dressing or ask for it on the side. Sides (Brussels sprouts, mashed potatoes, broccoli) were tasty and could be shared by two people. We enjoyed desserts made in-house—creme brûlée and Frangelico mousse, YUM! Great wine selection. Espresso and coffee were good and freshly brewed. Our server was knowledgeable about the home; his family has managed the restaurant for over a decade. He happily answered our questions about the history of the place and also recommended we come back and enjoy the bar upstairs which has a more casual vibe. Dinner was pricey for South Bend, but not as much if you are used to bigger city prices. Well worth it for the special occasion at a place you won’t find anywhere else!
Thank you for the positive feedback, we are so pleased that everyone enjoyed their experience here with us. We look forward to your next visit!
Delicious food. Great brewery upstairs. Creme brulee is phenomenal.
Perfect setting , good food
Wonderful selection and nicely prepared brunch buffet. A nice quiet meet up with excellent, professional service.
Took our five kids (23-10) for a Christmas Break family outing for lunch. We were seated in the Solarium room and had nearly the entire place to ourselves for an 11:30 booking. Our waitress was prompt, informative and courteous and provided us with exceptional service.
We split the crab cake appetizer (outstanding) to start. Four of us had the prime rib, one had duck, one had salmon and junior had the French dip. The beef was very flavorful but more importantly we were able to order it rare. The salmon was a large filet, tender and flavorful. The French dip was a large sandwich with plenty of Au Jus. The stand-out, though, was the duck. Not a large portion, but very well executed and flavorful.
Sides of green beans and potatoes were just okay with the beans being undercooked and somewhat bland—hard to source good green beans in Indiana during the winter for sure.
For desert we had the hazelnut mousse, cheesecake, and flourless chocolate cake. All were good.
After lunch we were free to look around the entire mansion on our own. With the Christmas decor still up, it was quite spectacular.
Dinner was excellent. We had a choice of the Buffet or a waiter. We choice the Buffet. Ate to much.
The Gala downstairs for New Years was added in the Price with the Buffet. The Gala was not very good. No place to sit. The Music was not Very good. Open bar would of been better. The rooms were to small for the size of the Crowd. Food looked Fair.
New Years eve
Great place for lunch especially with the Christmas decorating. Wait staff and food were excellent.
The food really isn't that good overall, and is fairly expensive. Hash browns are mushy and too salty, beef tips taste like soy sauce, broccoli salad tastes like mayonnaise, bean salad taste like vinegar dressing, etc. These flavors are overpowering in a bad way.
The roast beef and ham are pretty good. The crispy crust on the roast beef is delicious. Did not visit the omelet stations this time around, but have in the past and those were good.
What a pleasant time we had! The bartender was new to the brew pub but he did well by us. The noise level and content was loud and jarring when we arrived, but he changed and lowered the volume. Just be alert that because the food is prepared several levels below, the food could be a bit hotter or covered until served. The six meals were all well received and everyone enjoyed their first trip to this part of Tippecanoe.
If you want a quiet evening out, this is the ticket. The old mansion is elegant and engaging . Food is gonna be pricey but well worth it . We go 3-4 times a year
The atmosphere is wonderful. Beautifully decorated for the holidays. The food is very good. Service was good. The only complaint would be the chairs. I understand they want the furniture to fit in with the ambiance of the restaurant but a couple chairs at our table were very wobbly and the material very very worn.
We always try to eat here at Christmas on our trip from central NY to WI to see the kids. Have never been disappointed.
Great place, good food - good service - great history. Fun place to go in South Bend. We love it.
New Year’s Eve out with friends and my lovely wife.
Service was exceptional. Wait staff was very accommodating. One service was delayed due to cheese being served to someone allergic to dairy. Otherwise flawless.
However, it was mentioned by a couple in our party, the noticeable smell of tobacco on the breath of our server. Perhaps a breath mint would be appropriate.
For the most part we loved our experience. My corporate visitors have asked us to bring them back next time they are in town. All of us were a little disappointed with the food. Temperature wise.
Although it was tasty, the meat was on the cool side. From our vantage point, we saw our server sit several meat dishes on a table across the dining room. They literally sat on that table for 10 minutes before she brought out the vegetables from the kitchen and had those meat dishes brought over to our table. First thing one of my guest's (a chef, no less) did was plunge his finger into the middle of his very thick prime rib and it was cool to warm he said. He commented how long the meat dishes were sitting before she brought them to us and she said that she could not bring the meat over until the vegetables were ready to be served. She also said that all of the dishes under the meat were still hot and the so the meat was also hot. The meat was NOT hot. But, the seasoning was perfect
We did get a little bit of a discount, but still we paid $459.00 for 7 of us, and I think the discount should have been a little more. The meats are the main dish and that is why we dine there, and why I wanted to bring my boss there (he was visiting from HQ in Quebec City for our Christmas party).
My family has dined here since it opened as a restaurant and will continue to do so. But common sense here, please have your vegetables ready to go before the meat dishes are brought out to your diners, so all can be delivered directly to the table instead of sitting out in the open for 10 minutes. . .
Just going out for prime rib
Restaurant was beautiful. Our server was not good. Nice guy but slow, disorganized, and not very competent. Food was cold, and either over or under cooked depending on the order. My steak was mostly grizzle and fat. My wife ordered medium well and it was very rare and cold. We waited well over an hour for food once ordered. Main dish was even longer. I really expected it to be better for the price. I don't think it was worth the 100.00 for the two of us. The other 3 couples spent about the same and felt that way also. Maybe it was just a bad night or short staff, not sure, but we probably won't eat there again if we are in South bend. Sorry it's not a good review but maybe it will help.
Not greeted very well by people at front desk, liked the server but he was very quiet and clearly overworked-not enough staff that night? Everyone seemed stressed. My salmon dinner was excellent but the salads for the others had way too much dressing and the prime rib was barely cooked. Sorry. Disappointed overall. Hopefully it was just a bad night for the restaurant.
We have dined at Tippecanoe Place over the past 20 years. In the past we have enjoyed a top-notch meal in a terrific environment. Unfortunately, we found on our last visit that only the mansion's ambiance remained.
Our Server was good, but the food was beyond disappointing. Hardly a single entree was palatable - French Onion soup was mostly Worcester sauce; Chopped Salad's Green Goddess dressing nearly without taste; Roasted Duck was obliterated with a sweet sauce; Baked Potatoes not hot enough to melt the butter. We were very surprised at how bad the food - though priced to be expected as excellent - was a total failure.
The venue doesn't seem to hold clients to the dress code either, billed as Business Casual. The Dining Room was full of parkas draped over the back of chairs, and some were wearing baseball caps. Wasn't anyone directed to the Coat Room?
We would go to Tippecanoe Place expecting an above average meal and atmosphere, but it seems to have been allowed to degrade to a fancy, overpriced novelty.
We have lost a destination once worth driving an hour and a half. It's a real shame it has been allowed to come to this.
Food is always good and a nice variety for brunch. Love they had someone playing piano while dining.
