Food was great- service was TERRIBLE. Will not be returning because of how rude our waiter was.
I have been here several times and always have fantastic service and food. Whenever I have friends/family visiting, this is the place to go. Always impressive and delicious.
Drinks a bit on the high side. Food was great. Service was very quick
Great service and great food. Delivered food quickly so we could get to the hockey game on time! Waiter very attentive to ll of our needs.
Went here before a Caps game. I little dissapointed they have no happy hour specials, even at the bar. A basic mixed drink runs you about $12. The seating is really packed in tight, you are pretty much touching the chairs at the table next to you and behind you. I think they could take a tables out and make it much more comfortable dining experience. The service however is great and the food is really good. They have some creative dishes and the basics like pasta and fish. I'd go here again, but not buy any drinks.
I went there for a dinner before the hockey game. The beer and salmon were delicious; the salmon was cooked perfectly. And they got everything to me in time so I could make the game on time!
I’ve been wanting to try The Smith for a while now so when I got there I expectations were high. The food met my expectations but sadly everything did not. For one, where we were seated it was in the corner completely cramped. We sat for about 6 minutes without anyone coming to the table, so we asked one of the waiters who was supposed to be our waiter for the night. I saw him approached our waiter but instead of coming to use he went to the table in front of us and never came to the table but continued to eye our table without saying a word to us. At the end we paid our check in cash left it on the table and left. As we were walking out I saw the waiter who didn’t say I word to us take the check and the tip. I was very dissatisfied with the service but the food was great.
As many other reviewers stated, service was extremely slow. We were seated quickly, however, nothing else came in a timely manner. Server seemed stressed out and had an unpleasant attitude...maybe too many tables to service? My wine was served in a small bourbon glass (with no explanation for that) so perhaps they were out of clean glasses! Food was tasty but portion sizes were small. We left still hungry and were overall not impressed with this restaurant.
The service was absolutely horrible. We waited over 45 minutes for our drinks, over 80 minutes for our entrees. Manager was somewhat apologetic, but offered no explanation. Hard to want to ever go back...
VERY noisy, but I knew that in advance having read other reviews of the restaurant. Service was fair. We probably waited 20 minutes for our cocktails to be served and when they were served they were not right. In all fairness, our server expedited the order with the correct cocktails and we were not charged for them. Food was adequate; nothing special. With all of the options for dining in the area, it's not likely that I will be returning to eat at The Smith.
Fantastic service, great food and all around wonderful experience for my mom’s birthday. Lou is fantastic!
The Smith started as a fun restaurant with enough variety of tasty food and drinks but something has changed along the way. The Bloody Marys were really bad and flavorless; the food was just okay and they somehow managed to have one of us without food for 10 minutes after everyone else had theirs.
The short rib hash was so amazing!! Fun place for brunch.
I believe this is a hot spot in DC and NY. It has great food and friendly service in a relax and casual atmosphere. I would definitely come back!
Visited for breakfast. Silent ambiente, smoked salmon toast was very delicious. Friendly staff.
We went with 2 little kids, which can be stressful on parents. The waiter was extremely patient and understanding. Helped make the entire experience even better!
Excellent food! Excellent device!
Service very slow, though our server was nice and friendly. A steak ordered medium rare came out medium well, but the manager took it off of our bill.
I really liked the open atmosphere that is available here. The opening of the windows to just step outside is very cool. The service was great! Food was fresh! Drinks were creative and overall was a great place to eat!!
Enjoyed our meal very much. Would recommend dining here
We were seated at our table about 20 mins after our reservation time. 7 of us were seated at a round table that was probably meant to seat 5 or 6. We were later moved to a larger table. The two of us ordered mussels and the were out of them. I them order shrimp scampi that did not list onions on the menu list and it included them - I am
The food was pretty average and expensive for what you get. I ordered the brick chicken and spent the whole time wishing I'd ordered something else. The skin was crisp but to the detriment of the dish many places were so hard I felt I was eating a piece of chicken bone. The cocktails, however, were AMAZING, well balanced and bright. The appetizers looked great but unfortunately I didn't have much time to order. Would go back to try those but would most likely skip entrees and go for appetizers and drinks.
The oysters were amazing, as was the salmon. The restaurant has a cool vibe. We definitely would go back next time we're in town!
We had a great meal, sat outside it was a beautiful night. The pan fried mac n cheese is a must!
Over all...I would go back. Food is different and tasty...solid 4 stars on most.
Excellent service and food. Eggplant bolognese was delicious!
Food and service was great. A bit too noisy for my liking.
Good food but service was a bit slow and the noise level was high. Made it difficult to hear everyone at our table.
There were birds flying around in town he restaurant while we tried to eat breakfast.
This is my second visit but my first that involved food. After grabbing a quick drink at the bar one day after work I made it a point to come back for the food. This place is amazing - the location, the decor, the bartenders, the food and our server - Lorenzo - who was spot on in telling us that the toffee cinnamon brioche was not going to be something we wanted to share.
This was the best brunch I've had in a long time. I can't wait to come back to try dinner.
This was my first time visiting The Smith. The food and drinks are terrific! The place was comfortable, clean and cute. Our original server took a moment to become friendly with us, though they were never rude, and there were long periods of time without seeing them. At the shift change over, our new server was not very attentive and never introduced themselves. We asked for the check twice from different people and never received it. It was not until we were packing up to leave that someone approached asking if we needed something. I am assuming staffing may have been a bit overwhelmed since the restaurant was busy.
Overall it was a decent experience that I would try it again.
Great brunch- egg white omelette with beet salad and fruit! Perfect! Smooth iced coffee. The service is amazing. Quick yet courteous. Willing to customize. So nice to have brunch option until 4 pm on Saturday Sunday and Monday holidays. The Smith is my current fav for brunch in DC.
We waited almost 15 minutes to place an order and nearly as long for drinks. Service just seemed inattentive or overbooked. Not a bad, but definitely not a stellar experience.
Our first visit to The Smith in Penn Quarter for dinner left us with mixed feelings.
Food: The varied menu is bound to have something for everyone. Three of us really enjoyed our dinners: The Smith bar steak, which my friend said was unexpectedly really good; The Smith burger; and brick pressed chicken. I wanted to go light and ordered cucumber gazpacho and watermelon salad. I might not have ordered well. The gazpacho, while cool and fresh, had little flavor. The watermelon salad's description says, "heirloom tomatoes, cucumber, feta, olives, spicy lemon vinaigrette." Sounds nice. The salad was composed of greens drowned in dressing with two small pieces of watermelon and no olives.
Noise level: Yikes! Within the first couple minutes after being seated, we realized that we would have little, if any, dinner conversation. It just wasn't worth the effort to try to speak loudly across the table. In fairness, we were at The Smtih at a peak hour before a concert at Captial One Arena.
Service: Too often a decent restaurant's weakness, it was The Smith's downfall the evening we visited. Though we were seated immediately, table service was an issue. A server came to the table within a couple minutes after we were seated and took our drink order. The server seemed annoyed that we didn't want to order any starters. In fact, she didn't return to our table. She looked over at our table several times. Attempts to get her attention were met with averted glances. She apparently decided to give us to another server, resulting in a twenty-minute wait between when we gave our drink order and when the second waiter took our dinner order.
Bottom line: Because of the menu and food, we're willing to try The Smith again, though perhaps on an evening when there is no event at Capital One. And with so many dining options in Penn Quarter and Chinatown, we recommend that The Smith up its service game.
Busy night but service was a little slow and it is pricey (salad is $27!) but have great drink selection and people watching
This was our first visit, always on the hunt for new places to eat, The Smith did not disappoint us. We look forward to returning and trying more of the menu choices.
I was in town visiting family and they had never experienced the Smith before. I can say with confidence that they were blown away, as was I!
Much love to you all from Nomad location!

I've been to The Smith before and there is always something for every type of taste on the menu. I ordered Fish Tacos which I think were just a bit to pricy for the amount of food I was given. Also, our waiter took too long to come to our table to ask for our drink and food orders. Normally, I am not one to notice things like that but during this dining experience it was a bit over the limit.
Overall, it was still good. Ambiance was good and food was tasty. I just think that there are some pricing and personnel issues that could due with being looked at.
For two reasons I did not rate this restaurant excellent: It was very noisy, making conversation very difficult, and the waiters removed plates too quickly. My preference is for staff to clear the table after everyone is done. Otherwise, we found the menu to be very creative and the food tasty.
Service was unbelievably bad. The restaurant was out of the starter and both entrees we ordered. Really regretted coming here on 9/16/2018
