The Smack Shack
Although named for the boats used to catch lobster, Smack Shack was launched as a food truck in 2010 serving lobster rolls from a land-locked downtown Minneapolis parking lot. Owner Josh Thoma had a great recipe and a belief that appetite for fresh lobster in the Twin Cities was as strong as any coastal city.
Smack Shack is committed to serving sustainable seafood and is a current partner in the Minnesota Zoo’s Fish Smart program. Sustainable seafood is wild caught or farm raised seafood that has established practices to ensure the long term growth and thriving populations of seafood with limited harm to the environment.
Great service and delicious food! Would always recommend this place.
The entire experience was amazing! Nick was our server and I was grateful for it, extremely attentive and knowledgeable. The bar was playing relevant music and the the drinks were really good.
Glad I had a reservation
Not the first time, and not the last time we'll dine at Smack Shack.
Service was friendly but a little slow. Food was very good.
The Friday Fish Fry was "ok" - nothing to write home about. Thinking we'll try the Fush & Chips dinner next time and see if that's better.
The food was really good and super fresh! It was a little on the pricey side but that was to be expected with fresh seafood. We had the nicest waitress! She was so accommodating and friendly!
Parking isn’t the easiest but for downtown Minneapolis that was not a surprise.
Simple surroundings. Excellent fresh seafood.
Always one of our go-tos for brunch!
Amazing atmosphere, attentive and friendly service, and some of the best food we have ever eaten! Must try the lobster bisque. We also had king crab grilled cheese (to DIE for) and my fiancé had the lobster burger and said it was the BEST burger he has ever eaten. We will be back!
Great food and service.
If you're thinking of going, just do it. Amazing food and our waiter was fantastic. They even let my kids pet the lobsters 😜.
The Waitress was very nice and polite. The food was good and cooked to perfection!
Always very good, seems pricey for kids but it keeps them engaged and teaches them about cooking!
The food was delicious and service was great. I ordered the stuffed salmon and it was amazing. I would highly recommend it.
Great experience, as usual. Food was delicious and service was attentive but not overbearing. We happened to be there during restaurant week and ordered off that menu, so my only complaint would be that our food actually came out a little too quickly and we weren't done with our apps before our main course arrived. Highly recommend!
Made reservation during Restaurant Week and it was perfect. The dinner menu was everything we wanted as m husband and I have different tastes - he had the jambalaya and I had the original lobster roll. Food was fresh and delicious. Dessert was perfect - just the right size. Our waitperson was attentive, but not pushy. It was a great way to celebrate our anniversary!
Always excellent service and delicious 😋 food. Attentive server
Very good night out, but service was a little weak:
- Bartender was very good
- Reception desk forgot to come get us when our table was ready, but were friendly
-Waiter seemed overwhelmed, not friendly and not attentive
Food was really good.
I went for restaurant week and I was super excited! However the food was sub par. The lobster guacamole came out presented like it had came out of a ice cream scoop with 2 little pieces of lobster on it. The house sals was good but the po boy was falling apart and the bread was cold. The finale French silk “pie” was nothing but a sliver on the plate. Very disappointed. Not to mention I wasn’t even acknowledged when I came in they were to busy talking to each other and then left the hostess counter without saying nothing to me.
This was my friends and I first time at Smack Shack. We had a great experience overall! We loved our waitress, she was personable, smiling and attentive. We loved the food - all delicious!
We went for my boyfriends birthday and it was fabulous, the service was amazing and the food was great! Very great experience!
Casual, energetic, fun with a great seafood menu. California lobster roll is fabulous!
Seafood fresh and fun atmosphere! Would recommend to a friend
Great Experience! We went there for Minneapolis restaurant week and we got an appetizer and entree (with a side) for $25. I have been there before with work friends and the food & service is always great. I highly recommend the lobster Mac!
My fiance and I love sea food. We have been many places in the twin cities and surrounding area, Smack Shack is by far the best. The food is amazing and the service is excellent. Noise level is a bit much, but is to be expected from such a popular place. 10/10 would recommend!!!!
Excellent food! Lobster guacamole and connecticut style lobster roll were devine.
Great brunch. The Bloody Mary bar is amazing.
Always a good experience. Flavorful seafood and good portions. Tried the table boil with 4 people. Was really fun! Nice variety and the Alaskan Crab was bomb!
The food and service was great. The only issue we had was the table we sat at had a booth back. The next table was right next to us which the hostess tried to seat 3 couples and they refused. It was really tight and we would have been on top of each other. The place was busy but if they would have sat somewhere there, we would have left.
The Smack Shack is so good! My wife and I have now dined here twice, with the most recent being a Sunday afternoon at 4pm. Brunch ends at 3 and dinner starts at 5 so we were in that weird in-between time, so not everything is available. We were both fine with that, because the items we wanted were available-just a word to the wise for people dining here on Sundays.
Our service was not the greatest, as it took our server a fairly long amount of time between each time he visited our table, especially between greeting us and the time we wanted to order.
The food was amazing all around. For starters, we ordered the crab cakes and corn bread. They were both extremely good. The crab cakes were full of crab with just the bare minimum of binder and the corn/bacon sauce that they are served with is great in its own right. The corn bread was also very good, striking a good balance between sweet and spicy.
For dinner, I ordered the Connecticut style lobster roll. It is truly out of this world. The lobster is so flavorful and the bun that it comes in is just as good-nicely toasted, very buttery, just lovely. My wife, who is not a seafood lover, ordered the Lobster Lucy, lobster on the side (which I gladly ate). She said it was very good as well, with the beef flavor especially coming through. We appreciate them making some concessions for someone who isn't necessarily into the whole seafood scene.
Overall, this trip was fantastic and we will certainly be back when the occasion arises!
The food and service were fantastic! Two of our party had the two different lobster rolls, which were absolutely deliciou!. They have fun drink options. The place is set up like warehouse chic and done well. They do a nice job of keeping the dining separate from the bar crowd, which looked very up-tempo and exciting.
Me and my girlfriend ate here on 2-15-2020 for our Valentine's day dinner. It was our first time eating here and we can both tell you that our experience at Smack Shack far exceeded our expectations. Our server was so nice and allowed us to take our time with the menu and didn't rush us. She told us what her favorite items were on the menu and what goes good with certain foods. I had the Jambalaya which was absolutely delicious and my girlfriend had the Massachusetts Scallops and she LOVED it. We can definitely say that we'll be back here in the near future. Thank you so much Smack Shack for a wonderful experience.
Great place. Unique
Best lobster bisque I have ever had. I would have a thermos full every day for lunch
Amazing seafood, drinks, and amazing service! The servers always outdo themselves and are SO knowledgeable on all things seafood!
Our server was not overly attentive, but the food made up for it!
Food was good but it was lukewarm.
We were at the Smack Shack on Valentine’s Day and needed to be at the Fillmore by 7:00. Our server, Michelle, was simply amazing! She made sure our food was out quickly. One of the dishes was too spicy and she went out of her way to help alleviate the heat in the dish. The manager came over and said she would replace it but we didn’t have time. They took the item off the bill and gave my daughter some delicious clam chowder. The rest of the food was so tasty. Love this place and can’t wait to come back. Thank you Michelle! You are the best.
Out for Valentines Day had a couple of drinks and an appetizer and two entrees split a dessert service was outstanding food was great, we’ll be back
