The Smack Shack
Although named for the boats used to catch lobster, Smack Shack was launched as a food truck in 2010 serving lobster rolls from a land-locked downtown Minneapolis parking lot. Owner Josh Thoma had a great recipe and a belief that appetite for fresh lobster in the Twin Cities was as strong as any coastal city.
Smack Shack is committed to serving sustainable seafood and is a current partner in the Minnesota Zoo’s Fish Smart program. Sustainable seafood is wild caught or farm raised seafood that has established practices to ensure the long term growth and thriving populations of seafood with limited harm to the environment.
Fast service and amazing food would definitely recommend it to friends
We have been to The Smack Shack several times. The first time we went, the entire menu was not available as there is a bit of a limited menu selection between 3 pm and 5 pm. We still LOVED the food we had. The last time we ate at The Smack Shack, the entire menu was available. More that 3/4 of our party still chose to order from the menu that had been available during our first visit. In other words, they were so happy with their first dining experience, many retired to previously ordered items. I ordered the Crab Benedict which was not available after 3 pm and absolutely LOVED it! So basically, you can't go wrong when ordering at the Smack Shack: the seafood is awesome, the burgers are good.... the service is wonderful!
Usually love the shack. This time, not so much. Food wasn’t seasoned and very bland overall. Server was very busy and distracted, she came over several times to have us repeat items/drinks we had ordered. Place was absolutely packed so I guess mine is an unpopular opinion. I will be giving this place a rest and trying somewhere new next time.
Food is always fresh and good and service to match.
Our server, Ashley, was AMAZING. Ask for her section when being seated and you won't be disappointed. The Manager seated us and was very pleasant as well. Food was great. This is our second visit and definitely won't be our last.
First time being at Smack Shack and it was a delight. Very cool atmosphere for the bar area and dining area. Awesome to see into the kitchen area and see the seafood being prepped. Food was amazing and our waitress did a fantastic job. Thank you for such a great night.
We had a great meal at Smack Shack. My son-in-law and I had the lobster roll which you can't go wrong by. My wife had salmon and said it was really good. She is really into salmon and has it a lot so when she says it's good that is saying something. My daughter had the Connecticut Stye lobster roll which was awesome. We were seated upstairs which at first I was disappointed about, but it was quieter up there and it was great because we had a lot to catch up on so conversation was easier.
Celebrated our 5 year. Greeted with a congrats by the host and had great service all night. This is why we come here so often.
Great food and great service! One of the best family seafood dinners since we left Maine!!
My food was just okay...kind of disappointing. I never know what to expect....sometimes it is great but other times pretty mediocre.
This place is amazing! They have great options from appetizers, entrees and desserts! Definitely a must try!
Great food but a bit noisy.
So funny story, I took my family there (from out of town) since my sister saw it on TV we were dressed up and had a great time service and food was great. Upon leaving my Mom decided to buy us shirts to remember the night. I was told 30 for a hoodie but was charged 40, no biggie. We left went out drinking had a blast. The next day I try on the "new" hoodie to my surprise there are keys and ear buds in the pocket THEY sold me a USED hoodie. I call them only because these keys are electric and new, I knew they would cost $$ to get them replaced. There all no no no it wasnt used "really with keys and earbuds?" I just say I am calling to leave my number in case this person is looking for there keys. Long story short, I get a text guys super happy I take the A M off to go to post office and mail the keys to the Smack Shack attn to the manager or Owner. Thats it, no SORRY from the Smack Shack of Thank you for doing the right thing. In the world of hate and anger you would think since they made the error I resolved it on my own time and own dime they would say thanks! Its to bad we had a blast there, food was great. But when you sell someone something obviously used and make them take care of it, you'd think an apology or a thank you would be in order at least a NEW hoodie!!!
Lobster rolls were awesome!!
Bartender was terrific. Wait staff very helpful and attentive.
Not the best service or food that I have had there. still solid, but def off their game.
Always good food and drink.
This was our 2nd visit to this Smack Shack location and once again it was AWESOME !!! We sat by the bar this time during Happy Hour on our way to the Vikings game and it was packed. Our waitress didn't miss a beat even with the bar area being packed, she was on point the whole time. One person in our party didn't realize the top to the Old Bay Seasoning wasn't closed and poured it all over his fries. My husband told her what happened and she said "I will get you some more fries". She didn't even hesitate or say well do you want more or anything. She just said I will get you more. That's excellent customer service in my opinion. Some waiters/waitresses give you a hard time about something like that. I wish I could remember her name because I would give her a shot out. Moving on to the most important part......the food!!!!! I had the Connecticut Lobster Roll, and the Elonte Cajun Corn and it was EXCELLENT. It had great flavor, good size portions. My husband had the Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich and he loved it. The other two people in our party also enjoyed their meals and drinks from the bar. We will definitely be back.
They added an additional fee to the bill and when I asked the manager had to come over and explain that it was to keep paying additional benefit costs. I travel and eat out a fair amount and have never seen this fee before. I manage a business and have to manage my costs! I also didn’t like the fact that they now chop the King crab in 3” pcs. How do I know that I received what I ordered? I don’t think it was 2 lbs. meat was missing from some of the shells and didn’t see it on the platter. This is something newer that they do and I didn’t care for it either. Not sure if I will ever go back! It’s a shame that they have ruined it as it was a favorite stop when I was in town with clients.
I love coming here!!! Food and service is always amazing!!!!
Our waiter, Nic L., was a delight. It was restaurant night, but we didn't realize it until we checked the menus. Glad we chose that option. Everything was delicious.
I have never tried a Lobster roll and I fell in LOVE. Lots of flavor!
You did great with several large groups that night. Our server stayed on top of it!
The Smack Shack continues to be an excellent place for lobster. Their lobster roll is very good. I was a little disappointed this year for Restaurant Week they substituted a salad instead of desert. The deserts there are very good.
Awesome place! Great selection of seafood dishes. They are not stingy with the lobster or shrimp either.
Staff was great! We had a three year old dining and our server was amazing with him.
Amazing! Never disappointed. Noise level is always on the noisier side but it never bothers us. Just don’t expect a quiet atmosphere and everything will be great.
Matt behind the bar was awesome. Food... excellent!!
We both ordered cioppino - outstanding! Filling and flavorful. Great service and good wine. I even got a little birthday treat! Will be coming back!
Been there many times — we live just a few blocks away. Always a good place to dine.
Our party of four chose four different entrees. The original lobster roll had more bread and less lobster than the original and frys were spicey. Cold lobster roll was better than the original one.
Lobster bisque, red potatoes were really good. Lobster was not thick and meaty . Key lime pie was great.
Manhattan was also good.
A fun atmosphere with both outdoor and indoor seating. They offer a good craft beer selection and a creative seafood menu featuring their flagship lobster rolls. We also had some fresh oysters that were wonderfully fresh.
This is the first time I have been disappointed having brunch. All of us remember when the food was great and service top notch. Not the case today. Will take pause before we return.
Our server Nick was absolutely outstanding. Made the experience even better.
No complaints at all, great food and great service. It is a bit expensive but they are in a very popular and busy location.
Celebrated three year anniversary with my husband. Food was terrific! So were the drinks. LOVE the Painkiller. We were seated upstairs, so conversation was more pleasant for a date night. Had a great time!
The food was pretty good but there were fruit flys all over the place. I’ve been here a couple other times and never had this problem. They were really bad, swarming our wine and food the whole time.
What a great place to meet friends. Our server was amazing!
I love this place and I am never disappointed. The service is always top notch. The food is always incredible, especially the crab cakes appetizer - creamy with the perfect amount of heat.
