The Slogar building was built in 1882 by Thomas W. Lipcomb. It was the first tavern frequented by miners on their way home from a day’s work at the Big Mine on the Bench. Saloon girls would ply miners with libations after long hours in the coal mine. The Slogar claims a spot on the “Haunted Tour” of Crested Butte as these same saloon girls can be seen sweeping through the building in their large hoop skirts. In 1976, after a long vacancy, The Slogar building was restored and converted into a restaurant.
The Slogar has been offering family style, skillet fried chicken dinners in Crested Butte since its inception in 1989. Our specialty skillet fried chicken is from a world famous recipe dating back to 1915. Handmade baking powder biscuits, old-fashioned mashed potatoes, and rich chicken gravy have been a Crested Butte tradition for both locals and visitors for 30 years.
Fun outdoor dining and great fried chicken! Responsive staff and good service
Ayla and Ian always go above and beyond!! They made our celebration so special and we cannot thank them enough!!!
Literally the best fried chicken in Crested Butte. My son can attest to this and so does Allen's sons. Happy and full people. I loved the tomato chutney without a doubt one of the best sides. Services was the best and the cocktails, well I gotta say the bartender is an alchemist.
If you like family style fried chicken then you have to dine here. Best there is.
Bread not as good as years past. Food still very good.
We had outstanding servers and the food was excellent. Highly recommended!
Great food and great service.
It is literally so good every time. I’ve never had one single complaint.
Excellent food and service. It is expensive but the portions of chicken make up for the price.
We love Slogars!! We have a second home in Crested Butte and Slogars is a family favorite. The ambiance and service is wonderful. The food is delicious. For dinner we order the family style chicken and sides. You will leave stuffed and carrying a to-go-box. On weekends the brunch is also very delicious.
We LOVE this restaurant, and it is always our first stop for a meal in CB. The food is amazing and plentiful. I admit to being a “repeat offender”, as we try to eat our way through their menu for the entire time that we are in town.😋
Ayla & Ian are quite personable, as is every member of their team. The experience here is always top notch and should be on everyone’s “Don’t Miss” list.
I've been dining, at The Slogar, for 40 years! The atmosphere is wonderful, staff is extremely accommodating and friendly, and the food is outstanding!! The best fried chicken, and comfort food. Every year, when we go to Crested Butte, it is the one spot in which everyone insists on dining!
This is our 21st year coming to CB. Slogar has been a family favorite for most of that time. As ‘‘tis was my son’s birthday we let him choose where to have dinner. We arrived on time with our party of 7 and were seated at the scheduled time. The first thing that we noted was that the decor while similar has changed to incorporate some elements of pop culture that really don’t match the “old town” feel the place used to have.
The food has also changed. The relish tray has been replaced with salad and the chutney flavor is different. The chicken while still plentiful has also had an apparent recipe change. The biscuits appear to be from a can
We were offered doggie bags to take the left overs home. Since this was our last night in town we decided against and were greeted with poorly hidden distain from our server. Here’s the thing..... if they had asked we could have started with less and ordered more as necessary. This would hav created less waste. Usually with 5 teenagers there is less to take home but it just wasn’t great this time.
Finally, this place isn’t cheap. Usually, not a big deal but this time the experience was a few steps above KFC.
I am hoping that this is just a one time thing given the circumstances of 2020 and that our next visit will remind us of why this place is one of our favorites.
At the recommendation of a local, we went here to celebrate our daughter's birthday. It was the perfect setting for a family meal.
Family style meals. Good for large, hungry families or gatherings. Fried chicken was delicious but way too much food for two
They were short staffed and the service reflected it.
Took over an hour and a half for entire dining experience. Normally 45 minutes.
Staff was trying but couldn't make up for lack of staffing.
Consistent every time and delicious. We go every time we visit Crested Butte.
Amazing as always! We sat on the patio area they have and it was perfect!
Great as always at the Slogar - the chicken can't be beat, and we love all of the family-style sides
Great food, large portions, fun restaurant. I would highly recommend.
Sit down, shut up, and get ready for a culinary experience that will change your life. You come here, and you'll be getting the best fried chicken and sides you'll ever have.
Don't hesitate, make a reservation right now and be ready to have your world rocked.
We love this restaurant. Wonderful food and great staff. A great date night or evening out with the family.
A Crested Butte mainstay-always fun place to go with the family -fried chicken is great. The service was a bit lacking, but they are probably short staffed these days with all the restrictions going on - but everyone was very friendly - we will look forward to or next visit when in CB.
Excellent menu but I always get the fried chicken dinner. A three course meal with a bunch of homemade items.
Wonderful food and service! The fried chicken is amazing!
Slogans offers a classic dining experience. The kind of place the whole family will enjoy. Food is like grandmas and the Sauvignon blanc for about $40 was clean and refined. We took the leftover chicken on the Nordic trails the next day, which is a strategy I highly recommend! Enjoy!
Im so happy to hear you enjoyed your experience!!! Pocket Chicken!!!!!! I bet you were the envy of every PB&J on the nordic trails that day! cheers!
I made a reservation for 8 at 6:45 two weeks before our arrival date. We arrived on time and were told the table was “being set up”. My husband went to the bar to get us a drink and overheard a party of 10 come in, admit they didn’t have a reservation but wanted to know if they could get a table. They were seated 10 minutes later. We waited. Finally seated at 7:30. We immediately ordered. Food arrived 45 minutes later. Food is good but they really need to rethink their acceptance of reservations and walk ins.
The Slogar continues to deliver a unique experience. However, as time has gone on, a few changes have undermined the experience:
1) When we were shown to our table, we found that the cold dishes had already been put out. It seems to me better to deliver the dishes after seating, to reinforce that the food is fresh and has just been prepared. To put it out ahead of time obligates one to wonder how long the food had been sitting before our arrival. It seems logical to assume had we been 10 minutes late that our food would have sat out on the table for 15 minutes or more. Not very appetizing.
2) The menu has been extended to include other dishes, no doubt to extend the appeal of the restaurant in an age where "fried chicken restaurant" may not draw in patrons. Fair enough, but adding Mac & cheese which was then aggressively pitched by the waiter really made me feel like Slogar is trying too hard.
3) I was very disappointed by the Old Fashioned I ordered. As one of the owners is a mixologist I had very high expectations that this classic cocktail would be perfect. Instead, it was delivered with undissolved granulated sugar in the bottom of the glass--simple syrup is not only a bar supply standard, but takes only moments to prepare. There's no excuse for dumping granulated sugar into a glass of cold liquid, expecting it to dissolve. A very poor, lazy approach; I'm going to assume that Ayla was not behind the bar during our visit.
Taken together, while still enjoyable, and though I will still recommend Slogar as a unique experience, it has fallen off of our "must do" list when visiting Crested Butte.
Loved it! Great food and extra special experience!
A lot of food! Would be nice to have more options around smaller portions.
We offer more options and smaller portions on our parlour menu which is available at the bar or in the parlour room.
Too much food for 2 people! I hate to waste food so I wish there was a half order or two could share a whole order. Chicken was delicious!
We're so glad you enjoyed everything! We offer a smaller menu with more selections at the bar and parlour room. You are also able to split a full order of chicken and 1 person just pays for sides only. Thanks again and we look forward to your next visit!
Fantastic place to take your family. Go hungry cause the portions are insane! Definitely a must eat restaurant while in Crested Butte.
Extremely yummy food. Great service. Good location. We'll be back again!
Been going to the Slogar for 27 years. Under new management. Still classic fried chicken but also some new additions for dining. Like the green salad and collard green options. The tomato chutney and cottage cheese is the best!! Always a treat. We look forward to our annual dinner!!
There are fancier places in Crested Butte, but none of them have better food.
Excellent as usual!
Excellent southern food. Good price and nice atmosphere.
Comfort food at its finest. Alyssa (Alysha) was amazing. One of the best servers I have had in a long time. We will be back!
Another awesome food, drink, and experience with one of the great fun establishments in CB!
