The Slogar building was built in 1882 by Thomas W. Lipcomb. It was the first tavern frequented by miners on their way home from a day’s work at the Big Mine on the Bench. Saloon girls would ply miners with libations after long hours in the coal mine. The Slogar claims a spot on the “Haunted Tour” of Crested Butte as these same saloon girls can be seen sweeping through the building in their large hoop skirts. In 1976, after a long vacancy, The Slogar building was restored and converted into a restaurant.
The Slogar has been offering family style, skillet fried chicken dinners in Crested Butte since its inception in 1989. Our specialty skillet fried chicken is from a world famous recipe dating back to 1915. Handmade baking powder biscuits, old-fashioned mashed potatoes, and rich chicken gravy have been a Crested Butte tradition for both locals and visitors for 30 years.

We have been going to Slogar’s for the past 35 years and have always made it a special part of our ski vacations. This time, we went in the fall and have to say we were disappointed. The creamed corn which we loved so much was lumpy, too sweet, and tasted like it was out of a can. The mashed potatoes were not warm, the gravy was thin and tasteless. We missed the spiced pears that used to come with the appetizers. It was salad instead. Maybe this was a seasonal menu change. The chicken was excellent, as always.
The service was also not up to past standards. Our waiter was not attentive to our needs. He seemed more focused on a nearby table of men who came in after us and who clearly knew him. He would not turn around to check on us or ask us if we needed refills or anything. We always had to speak out to him to get his attention.
After so many years and such great memories of Slogar’s, we are not sure we will go back when we come to ski next year. That’s really sad.
I wish the you had not changed the menu. Loved the relish try, the creamy cottage cheese, the corn used to be better. Also the cole slaw was not tasty at all. Hardly ate half a serving. Loved it before new ownership. The biscuits were delicious but thought it strange the the butter and jam were served in little plastic "to go" things. My husband tried the ribs and found them to be very dry. However the chicken was as delicious as ever. It tasted like the old days. Please think about going back to the original recipes for all of the food. If it ain't broke don't fix it! I would love to know your reasoning for the changes.
We had such delicious food and our waitress, Sam, was excellent, pleasant and attentive. Super fun dining experience.
We had a great time eating at Slogar. Catherine Ann was the best and made our night even better!
What can I say about Slogar... It scratches whatever itch you may have. Need stick to your ribs food? Done. Need something to quell your tummy after 4 days worth of freeze dried REI packets? Done. Have 15 people and want a great group dining experience? Done.
Get off Elk Avenue... You won't be disappointed.
Love to make the trip to visit the Slogar - delicious family style chicken dinners and sides, great bar and staff.
The food was amazing! We loved everything about our experience at The Slogar. Couldn’t recommend it enough. That chicken is just to die for.
Love Love this restaurant I’ve been eating here for years and it never disappoints me
Wonderful summer patio just couple blocks from action on Elk Avenue. Food and service was wonderful and nothing like delicious fried chicken hot from the kitchen.
Chicken good as ever. Service was good too. But the sides were pretty mediocre.
Anniversary dinner 46 years!!
Amazing experience. Sat outside on the patio, great atmosphere. Staff was very attentive and friendly. The ribs were good but the chicken was divine. All of the sides were great. The cream corn had a nice spice to it but not overwhelming. I would highly recommend the chicken dinner.
Slogars never disappoints! My family has been going there for years. I was able to bring my husbands family and enjoy a birthday dinner. Service was prompt and wonderful. Food was amazing!!!
As always great meal/drinks. Thank you for another great time and seating outside.
Had a wonderful evening at Slogar. The chicken dinner was amazing and the service was very friendly, accommodating and very nice. The owner spent some time talking to us too. Sam our server was super. She was great. Definitely coming back next time we’re in Crested Butte.
Love the slogar. Dinner ended early because our table was needed for 7:00 reservation. Just make that more clear from the beginning. For example, “dinner guests reserving tables at 5:30 must be done eating by 6:50 to make room for our new guests who make their reservations for 7:00”. Instead we were told “no” to ordering a bottle of wine, were brought dessert in the middle of our main course, were given a to go bag for chicken in the middle of our meal and told to move to a table 10 inches in diameter. I enjoyed my evening at the slogar very much. The part I didn’t like was having our dining experience ended prematurely and out of nowhere as I was told to put all my food into to go containers and was then told to move to a table that was not suitable for dining. Thank you, Chase Crawford
Our server wasn’t the best...she seemed either tired or lazy...asked several times for ice after 3 times bus server brought it out on a very hot evening...dined here often by far the server was the worst...fortunately the chicken dinner was as always outstanding...🧐
Third year that we have been to Slogar during a CB weekend. Covid didn’t ruin this! We ate a picnic tables outside and our friends said it lived up to all the talk they’ve heard from me over the past couple of years. Food was perfect from beginning to end and yes they have a great wine list (not what you think about with fried chicken, but it works!!!). Great friendly service. Look forward to our next trip.
You can always count on Slogars! Their outdoor seating was rustic shabby chic cool - so Crested Butte. The chicken was spectacular, biscuits classic, chutney and cottage cheese distinctive must have. And who can argue with vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce. Simple, order the chicken, don’t make any changes.
I will start by saying I love slogars, with that said the service was horrible this past time and the waitress was rude.
There was a young guy walking around who did ask several times if we OK.
Food is always good, upset about this last visit.
Not an outstanding experience for an expensive friend chicken dinner, but it's in Crested Butte, CO, so they've got to make a living somehow.
Excellent food and ambiance outside with live music! Service a little unorganized and slow but think the staff got behind and our table for 2 suffered some. But really good restaurant that I recommend
Food and ambience were excellent.
Slogar was a great find in Crested Butte. The food was amazing, the ambiance was great, and the service was great. I caught an issue on my bill the following day and called and they responded right away and helped me fix it. I really appreciated the service.
The staff and the food were both fabulous! When you can shame a southern momma with your fried chicken, you’ve done it right! Every part of the meal was delicious and the staff were very hospitable. We would highly recommend it.
You can't beat the fried chicken at Slogars, but don't expect the ambiance of old. Gone is the quiet "almost elegance" of the place. It feels more like a fast food restaurant now, so expect a lot of scurrying around by the waiters trying to handle the outdoor dining as well as indoor. Covid-19 has taken its toll on this place.
Food is pretty good. Service was a bit below average - but we have only been once so it may not be an accurate reflection of how service typically is.
Amazing food and service.
Great chicken. Might have preferred some different sides-choice of salad dressing, etc. but overall very good meal. Don’t miss the chicken!
It was good but not quite as good as last year. It seems something may have changed, not sure what. The presentation of dishes seemed cheap compared to our previous visit. Still very good fried chicken.
Fun outdoor dining and great fried chicken! Responsive staff and good service
Ayla and Ian always go above and beyond!! They made our celebration so special and we cannot thank them enough!!!
Literally the best fried chicken in Crested Butte. My son can attest to this and so does Allen's sons. Happy and full people. I loved the tomato chutney without a doubt one of the best sides. Services was the best and the cocktails, well I gotta say the bartender is an alchemist.
If you like family style fried chicken then you have to dine here. Best there is.
Bread not as good as years past. Food still very good.
We had outstanding servers and the food was excellent. Highly recommended!
Great food and great service.
It is literally so good every time. I’ve never had one single complaint.
Excellent food and service. It is expensive but the portions of chicken make up for the price.
We love Slogars!! We have a second home in Crested Butte and Slogars is a family favorite. The ambiance and service is wonderful. The food is delicious. For dinner we order the family style chicken and sides. You will leave stuffed and carrying a to-go-box. On weekends the brunch is also very delicious.
