The duck is cannot miss; quail is tasty as well; broth was hearty and delicious
Delicious food served inside outdoor cabanas with excellent heating. I particularly enjoyed the brussels sprouts, the sunchokes, and the brown butter parsnip cake dessert, though everything was tasty.
Booths were cool and very cozy, great food, beverages and service. Special kudos for Adam the wine guy, interesting list and great recommendations.
Amazing restaurant! Food and service 10 stars!!
We had to sit outside and the street was being paved so it was a little noisy and smelly but not their fault. The food was fantastic. I'd say don't skip the eggs, brussel sprouts or spare ribs. The quail took awhile to arrive and seemed slightly undercooked, good but not great. Short but decent wine and beer list.
Progress/State Bird has never disappointed me! Everything we ordered was delicious. Awe, the deep-fried queal was memorable, so was the endive salad w/ bacon bits!!! The staff was attentive, too!
Awesome place. They have nailed COVID-19 too and keep patrons very safe.
Excellent service
Dining outdoors inside a roomy "hut" with butane heaters to keep us warm only made the experience more unique. The menu is a hybrid between The Progress and State Bird Provisions, so just as delicious if not as spontaneous as SBP's original "dim sum" serving style.
Always one of my favorite meals
Good, inventive food. Appetizers generally better than mains. On my visit the modest sized Sturgeon Caviar Potato Cloud ($12), and the Black Garlic BBQ Pork ribs ($24) were standouts.
For entrees The Progress BBQ Duck Platter for 2 ($70) and especially the Black Cod Tail, Collar & Belly ($65) were very good. The CA State Bird with Provisions ($32) was disappointing. The coating on the quail was pleasantly crunchy but the bird was under seasoned and it was presented on a bed of unpleasantly sour cabbage.
Desserts were good. On the night we were there the Boozy Pound Cake ($12) and World Peace Peanut Milk ($3 a shot) were my favorites.
For what it is, this restaurant is pricey and not just the food. The corkage is $50 for the first bottle and the wine list mark up is higher than average. Our bill, for 4 people, came to around $720 with wine and tip. Regarding service, the hostess greeting us was a bit snobbish and our server started out aloof but ended up being very accommodating. Hard to comment on ambience in the Covid era. Bundle up! If you're not in one of the wind shielded side walk booths you will be at the mercy of the elements. We were told the booths were spoken for but, halfway through dinner they moved us, shivers and all, into one of them and it was a lot more comfortable. If you make a reservation during the cold months, request a booth and be prepared for the check.
I cant really fault them for the ambience as it had to be outdoors due to Covid and it was very cold and windy that day which took away from the dining experience. The food was inventive but very salty and I usually like salty food.
Everything was excellent but we were sad that most of our state bird favorites were not on the menu. Please consider adding the dumpling in broth, any of the savory pancakes, the Kung Pao sweetbreads, the pork belly, the burrata garlic bread, and the oysters.
I wish there were more items on the menu.
The cabana built were a nice warm and cozy. The menu was very limited and quite expensive, we missed all the wonderful small dishes and flavors.
Great food in a fun and comfortable setting. They've done an excellent job of adjusting for COVID service.
Great food, great service, great atmosphere.
Great food, even better service. Made great recommendations.
I never leave reviews and hyper-critical of restaurants, that said it is the best restaurant in San Francisco, hands down. Alicia was an amazing server. We loved every second of our experience.
Exceptional, creative food. Every bite is a treat.
Appetizers were surprisingly better than the reviews - the sauce goes a long way
Outdoor dining with the COVID restrictions was handled quite well. The food and cocktails were great and the service was attentive. The only caveat is that the outdoor seating can be quite chilly if not prepared. Our dog was also welcome next to our seats which was another nice bonus about sitting outdoors.
Absolutely delicious - everything! Cocktails were on point too. It’s my new fave restaurant.
We've been wanting to go here for a long time but thank you Covid we managed to get a reservation sitting outside. They have built great outdoor booths which work for social distancing. The waiters were up front about they will not come to the table if everyone does not have their masks on and they stick to it but in a totally polite way. Food was amazing too. I had a gin cocktail which was fantastic. Fried anchovies were great and I had the sea bass dish which may have been the best fish dish I have had (and I've had a lot because I eat fish but nor meat). Wine is a bit pricey but that really is the only negative thing.
We had not visited pre-COVID so I don't have a point of comparison, but our visit was outstanding nonetheless. Every dish we tried was incredible - flavorful, unique, well-portioned. The cocktails were a bit too sweet for my taste, but delicious. Service was fantastic, and safe - servers wore masks and asked us to wear masks as they approached, and we were able to pay by scanning the receipt with our phone. We were there celebrating our anniversary and the staff made us a festive menu in-theme, which was a nice touch.
My only note: the standalone booths set up outside made us feel very safe, though we went for dinner and it was *freezing*. The booths didn't have heaters set up while the standard outdoor dining tables alongside the restaurant did. Luckily, we came bundled up but it would have been nice to be able to eat dinner sans coats.
Corkage policy was changed but never got prior notification. When I made this reservation policy was different. This should have notified to reserved customer.
Best Food, Even Better Service!
The food was fresh and innovative and the service was excellent. When our limited time was up but we still had some wine to finish, the staff set up a new table for us to finish our wine in relaxed setting. Will definitely return.
Great time! Everyone enjoyed themselves and the staff we very accommodating with a reservation that kept needing to be moved around. Will recommend to friends
Freaking spectacular
Outdoor dining at its best. Slightly chilly but not uncomfortable. Food was on point (as we would expect) and service was helpful and professional.
Food and service were both excellent (ordered both platters and 5 other dishes, all of which ranged from very good to amazing. For example, the duck platter was to die for; however, if you’re familiar with mochi, the kabocha mochi was underworked and thus too soft, lacking that hint of chewiness. Yet, the dish itself was still very good due to the flavors. The outdoor seating felt safe from COVID (booths that were separated with wood and plexiglass) and the decorations were understated and welcoming. We’ll definitely go back again.
Amazing! Outdoor parklet booths are gorgeous. The food/service/ambiance exceeded all expectations!! Thank you!
Great food! Great Service! Great Atmosphere! Pricey but worth it!
Loved it - great service, unique and flavorful food.
Love you guys!! My favorite restaurant in the bay. They are so accommodating and friendly 💗 Food great as always!!
This was my first time eating indoors since restaurants opened back up partially in San Francisco. The ambiance was lovely and everything felt very Covid-friendly. Even though I expected to receive the traditional State Bird menu, the experience of having the best menu options from both The Progress and State Bird was still exceptional. The food was cooked perfectly, the waiter was friendly and accommodating. Will definitely come again!
Really wonderful food but a somewhat unpleasant maitre’d
Great food!
Really nice outdoor Covid booth. Very private and the service is excellent. Food was very good, but not sure was up to the hype. Not an everyday sort of restaurant for us.
