The Prado at Balboa Park
Under chef Jonathon Hale's creative direction the Prado Restaurant has won honors as San Diego's Best New Restaurant, has been named one of America's top 10 restaurants by Gourmet Magazine, received the coveted "four star" award by the California Restaurant writers association.
Cailifornia cuisine paired with truly excellent service, unique ambiance, hand crafted decor and outdoor/indoor dining year round are just some of the reason's why we've won "most romantic" and "best special occasion" restaurant.
Service is great, Michael and the wait staff are very attentive and polite.I love the decor and the best is the food of course! Chilean Seabass was just so delicious. The fish, cooked to perfection and sits on a veggie hash which is on top of a corn puree. Topped off with fennel. I wanted to lick my plate! I forgot to mention the very tasty Portabello Salad, just fresh and good! I finished very satisfied but had to have the orange sorbet with a thin yummy cookie on the side.Just a terrific meal...as usual! We did miss our favorite manager Patti ,who is just a delightful women and does an amazing job, Sadly she was off.!l LOVE THAT PLACE
Everything we ordered from appetizer to deserts was delicious and the service was excellent. Beautiful restaurant!
Great food and excellent service. Highly recommended.
We let the hostess select our seating and it was a beautiful interior garden view. I ordered Kobe burger and it was outstanding. Heavy rains kept our group from ordering cocktails but we’ll return soon.
Can't go wrong with Cohn Restaurant Group. Love the Prado for special occasions!
Food was delicious and enjoyed the view also the service was great they took care of us on our anniversary. I would recommend and will be returning soon.
We really enjoyed our date night meal at the Prado.
Two friends meeting for a relaxing lunch and conversation. We had an unrushed afternoon with great service.
Perfect when you're going to be in the Park at night. Make a reservation!
Awesome service and quality meal. Always a pleasure to dine there.
The pork chop and mashed potatoes are simply divine. I enjoy Prado as it is reasonably priced and beautiful atmosphere.
Pre-show dinner and drinks at The Prado. She had the skewers and I had the pork chop. We shared the pear salad. Desserts were uninspired.
My friends and I always enjoy eating at The Prado before the theater. Friendly, excellent service, good food in the right proportions. We always get served promptly, have a leisurely meal and visit and make it to the theater in plenty of time to get seated and comfortable before the play begins.
We found ourselves running late for our reservation due to a prior appointment. When I called to let the restaurant know, the receptionist told me not to worry about it & she would make a note of it. When we arrived an hour late, the hostess thanked me for my phone call & we were seated immediately. That was a great start to our experience. Our service was also great & I asked if the bartender could make a raspberry mojito which he/she did & it was excellent. The raspberries were muddled - not all bartenders do that extra step. I ordered the mushroom risotto which I have had previously and it was delicious!! My husband ordered the marinated skirt steak tacos which were also delicious. The entire experience was outstanding which is what I have come to expect from the Cohn Restaurant Family!
Alfi our server was outstanding, she was attentitive, professional, helpful and a pleasure to have her be our serve. the food was good as usual. we enjoy eating at the Prado when we are at Balboa Park
The Prado is a favorite - lots of history there. The outdoor setting for lunch is fantastic. Love their included appetizer! The salads were good and we enjoyed ourselves immensely. Can’t wait for our next visit!
The pork chops are spectacular!
Risotto was great!
We had a lovely window table overlooking the patio. The service was fast and kind. Our server made great suggestions, and promptly took care of a glassware request. After the pre-theater crowd cleared out, we were able to order a second drink, dessert, and relax. We did not feel rushed. The menu has a new, Asian-fusion vibe, and it worked well. Great value in the park.
Always a favorite. Can count on delicious food and great service in a delightful setting.
This is a busy restaurant. We sat sat in a relatively quiet section. So, no problem. It is not a quiet, romantic restaurant. However, the most important aspects of any restaurant - food, service and price, are just great.
Our waiter was helpful and attentive. He made some recommendations and we followed his advice. My wife got the Chilean Sea Bass and I ordered the Duck. OMG. The food was absolutely delicious. This was so moist, delicate and flavorful. My wife can't remember better fish.
The duck was amazing. Can't even well describe the taste. It was hands down the best duck I have ever eaten.
This was the best meal we have had in a very long time. Bravo.
It was a terrific experience marred by the fact that the outdoor patio was not open. It was a beautiful evening, so this was incomprehensible. I made plans for out-of-town company to be there and worked around that particular evening so that we could dine on the patio. It was a big disappointment.
Beautiful interior and always great service. The food is fine, but not as good or creative as it could be.
Our waiter was great and food was excellent overall. However, two of us had the sea bass and it was a little fishy.
We love Paella at the Prado
The Prado never disappoints!
I wrote a wonderful detailed review of this great restaurant and when I went to upload the photos, my review was lost. So, I don’t feel like spending another 10 minutes writing a review and I don’t want to be continually hounded by Open Table so here are my comments
Just take my word for it, this is a place not to be missed
I took my friend there to celebrate her birthday!
As always, it was wonderful. Our waiter made it a special occasion with Flan.
We are so fortunate to have such a great place to celebrate.
We were seated outdoors and enjoyed the hummingbirds and bees who were having lunch too.
Very pleasant place to enjoy an evening of great food and drink. Would highly recommend!
My beet salad with salmon was delicious! Great place to bring a friend for lunch to catch up!
There for a light dinner before a play at the Old Globe. Server was very sensitive to our time issue and expedited the meal beautifully. We had plenty of time to get to the theater! Food was well prepared and delicious.
Do you like charge of 4% of bill to pay for increased costs
Love every visit to The Prado! Always a relaxing atmosphere and delicious food!
Food, server, ambiance were all great. Getting seated was another story. I made a reservation a week in advance. There were 4 of us. We were shown to a small table with no white tablecloth which backed up to the busy server station. It was very full and noisy in that room. The enclosed patio right next to that room had several nice empty tables and we asked to be moved, which they did. Why oh why do hostesses try to give you an undesirable table when there are many better ones available? It just starts the whole experience out on the wrong foot.
The Prado is one of our favorites as the food and ambiance are so fantastic. I love the date night special and I try to make it there anytime that I can.
It is such an ideal spot to take friends from out of town because of the beauty of the restaurant and the park.
Great value. Beautiful setting. One of our favorite dining places.
Foof was delicious, waitress was friendly and helpful, location is great.... couldn't ask for anything more. Highly recommend the prado. Great for a nice date.
Make reservations! Got request for patio. Got the sun I wanted. Excellent service. Lunch is still pretty pricey. My martini was good but not worth $14, had an app and shared a sandwhich. With tip, $30 a piece. Next time, I'll have fish or steak tacos. Definately paying for ambiance.
Does not disappoint, ever! Fantastic food, atmosphere, service.
If one has an evening activity in Balboa Park, such as the Old Globe Theatre, then The Prado is the only obvious choice. The food is very good (particularly good considering this is a Cohn Group restaurant compared to some of the others), vegetarian-friendly (the black bean soup is vegetarian and the mushroom risotto is excellent according to my wife who is a vegetarian and prefers real food), with both a decent sangria and an excellent wine list. If the weather is good, the patio (with carbon dioxide emitting heaters) is a good choice -- relatively quiet and with a good view, including hummingbirds.
We love the Prado so! I wish the restaurant opened an hour earlier (which would make the pre-theater meal a bit more leisurely on Sundays), but that's just about my only complaint. We enjoyed the always-excellent paella and the sea bass, and one member of the party had the beet salad and raved about it. Our waiter, Devon (Devin?), had seen the play we were going to later and warned us we might need Kleenex—and very kindly supplied a few extra cocktail napkins just in case. We crowned that delightful meal with the chocolate mousse cake and the black currant meringue pie, both delicious.
