I've eaten at The Pit now at least a half dozen times since moving to Durham. It's walking distance, so could be a destination when I need a Q fix, which I frequently do. I'll not be going back to this place.
The problem is not the wait staff. I've invariably had some very pleasant experiences with many waitresses and waiters here. The problem is the food.
I get it that the Q comes from the Raleigh mother smoke pit. It's not hard to transport food. What I don't get is the absolute lack of attention to detail the kitchen manager is paying to the food. In an effort to get food out fast, things like fried chicken are pre-cooked and not cooked to order. This is an important point. When two orders of fried chicken come out of the kitchen in less than 10 minutes, I know it's not been cooked right then. The skin has lost its crispness, The meat is dried out. It's no longer hot. It's essentially dreadful. A good kitchen would NEVER let this happen. Fries are also never served hot. I always have to return them, sometimes twice got get them hot from the kitchen. Most food comes out of the kitchen, plated and not much more. The ribs, brisket, chopped pork, etc. that are smoked are warm at best.
The worst part for The Pit, is that nobody seems to care. The wait staff knows the kitchen sucks. They sort of roll their eyes and get more fries when I send them back. So the problem is pervasive to the kitchen at least in Durham.
I wish I could recommend this restaurant. I can't. Not at all. Maybe the mothership in Raleigh is better, but I won't find out because I won't waste the gas to drive there and see if it's better. Too bad. This could be a great Q restaurant, but it's merely mediocre. And that's being generous.
Overall I had a nice experience. Customer Service was awesome. Food was good, they did run out of an entrée but the alternative was good. Peanut butter pie, lacked plate appeal wasn't very good. Valet parking a real value. Valet drivers were awesome, very attentive my car was up and ready when I exited the restaurant.
Food is always good but this time it was outstanding. Great waitress to I. Very helpful
Great food and great server! Will return! Ribs and brisket were wonderful
Ehhh. I had high hopes. The okra was ok. The black eyed peas were really good. The bbq was fair. Nothing outstanding that would send me back.
My wife and I went to The Pit on Sunday for lunch to celebrate our anniversary and we did not find the server very attentive and the restaurant was empty. She was good, but.... We'd still go back to the restaurant if in the area.
Delicious barbecue--especially loved the Lexington brown! Impeccable service despite the crowd. Our waiter was especially accommodating since we had to get in and out in a hurry, and he made that happen flawlessly. We look forward to lingering the next time we go.
Usually the food is better. They were out of barbecued chicken which two out of three ordered, however the manager did tell us and was gracious about it. Aside from that, all the proteins we ordered were a little overdone. Brisket, fried chicken, chicken wings, ribs. Not our best meal there, but we will be back and still highly recommend the Pit, just maybe not on a Sunday night.
Evening meal before wedding!
Waitress Ashley was wonderful and the food was good
Service was friendly and outstanding, kept filling our glasses. Food very plentiful and filling. Incredibly tender pork.
Overall, it was a good experience. The service was a little slow, but understood because our waiter needed to help out at a busy bar
We've been to The Pit before, but no since their updated menu. Disappointed. BBQ is no longer served on the hot skillet but now on a cold plate. The menu is dummied down from the strict BBQ place it used to be. Now the place is just like any other place. Unfortunately, the BBQ wasn't as good as it was before. Bummed.
Recommendation from former Durham resident, now CA neighbor. Our good fortune to partake in this creative take on classic Carolina BBQ!! All dishes we tried were excellent. Josh, our server, impressed w/his attentive, eager service. He's a keeper Pit owners! Location is great, appearance understated, good layout. Lots of motivation to return to Durham!
tried the 4-protein (chicken, pull pork, ribs, and beef brisket) combo. will only recommend the beef brisket
Delicious food everywhere. By far one of my most memorable meals I've ever had.
Was in Durham for the evening and decided to get some local bbq. Found The Pit on line and decided to check it out. Finding parking was a challenge, but the restaurant offered complimentary valet parking which was nice. Enjoyed my meal and the service was excellent.
We where a party of nine celebrating two birthdays. Our waitress was on point with everything. Some of our guests liked it so much they purchased pints of BBQ to take home with them.
Four of us for lunch. Three ordered brisket and I had smoked ribs. Food was excellent. Our waiter was great. Good sense of humor and he seemed to show up whenever we needed him. We will definitely go again!
Ribs were excellent. Brisket was too fatty. Service was exceptional.
Some of the best BBQ I’ve ever had. Servers were so friendly. Really fast service. If I lived there, I’d be a regular for sure.
My first time at either location, and I can't believe it took me so long to go. The food was amazing, with huge portions. The service was fantastic. The ambiance was great, very lively and fun. Good cocktails too. I'll definitely be back.
We were a party of eight. Three members of my party ordered all white meat fried chicken. It took about 15 minutes after the other meals were delivered for the three chicken dishes to be delivered. I felt that management was responsive and made every effort to apologize. Serving a party of eight is the norm for them and I was surprise this service was below their standard.
As always, the food was excellent and the service was friendly and fast.
Service is good Gem to the neighborhood plenty parking food is good
Love the atmosphere and the food. We go there every month or so and always enjoy it.
We should've ordered more Ribs. The BBQ was delicious.
Awesome bbq! Loved it
Love this place! Great southern comfort food, barbecue is great but their ribs and fried chicken are also standouts. And don’t miss the fried pimento cheese balls! Service is decent to great depending on how busy they are, staff are always friendly though. Definitely would recommend for a date or groups!
We had a great date night, we went at 5 and had the place to ourselves basically. Good food, relatively quiet, great service, next to some cool bars/breweries.
The food is good. Wasn't enthused that the manager marked as us no-shows to Open table but it got straightened out. The valet was absent when we arrived, even though we waited a few minutes. Love the food portions. Service is good. It does get loud here. This is a good place for portions.
My visit was during Valentine's Day and was a shot in the dark that turned out to be a great evening with the food being great (more than enough) and the service and location adding to the evening. Ran into some friends dining as well.
Food was delicious as always. The serving of the meats are very big so order accordingly. The fried chicken......OMG!!!
The Pit is a casual fun place that offers good Southern food. Our only complaint is that the food is never hot. We've been here a few times and each time the fries are tepid at best and the fried chicken is barely warm. The ribs are closer to what one wants in temperature but even they could be better. I hesitate to complain because the food is very good but hot food is a must for us. I hope they heed this suggestion.
My husband and I decided to try The Pit or the first time and was impressed with the quality of the food and the building. We will be back.
Compared to the Pit in Raleigh when it opened, the food here is not as good. Service was scattered. Ordering was a chore, given the noise level. At least 5 people came by the table to take an order, reorder drinks, clear dishes, deliver appetizers, deliver meals (and I understand that many restaurants use the team approach). But the whole experience was frazzled, not energetic; and the food would have to be a lot better to excuse it.
My brisket was 40% meat and 60% fat, throughout all three slices.
Always great food, and always great service. Some of the best Carolina barbecue there is around.
Great food. Good vibe. Great service. We always enjoy our meal at the Pit.
BBQ is delicious! Collards and black eye peas as well. Disappointed in Mac and cheese
First time visit to the Pit. Had heard good things. Brought an out-of-town guest from Minnesota to try local barbecue. He had que, I had ribs, my wife had pork shoulder. Service was good.
Minnesota guy liked the que.
I was surprised, my back ribs were over cooked and dry. The pork shoulder was dry. Flavor was ok. I've had ribs and barbecue all over, and make it myself, this was pretty mediocre.
Fried green tomatoes were great. Fried okra, black eyed peas were great.
We enjoyed ourselves, but probably won't return.
