The Pit - Durham
Our server was very nice but this was bad bbq. Couldn’t get a knife through the beef brisket - like rubber. Ribs were fair at best. Pulled Pork was good but not special. Won’t be back.
Food was good and our server Jerrod was fantastic
Great atmosphere and great food at reasonable prices!
The brisket was tough. We had come specifically for that. The server took a long time to get to our table.
Food is always delicious and in a cool location.
We made a reservation and were seated immediately. Our waiter came over after about 10 minutes and saw we had been waiting for quite awhile. He asked for our orders then and came back with the biscuits and hush puppies. We didn't see him again until he came to apologize for our food taking so long and it would be out soon. The food was right behind him. It came out about 40 minutes after we placed it and was already cold. He never came to ask us how it was so we just finished eating and got the check and left. The price of the meal was incredibly reasonable, I just wish we had better service and got to enjoy hot food.
Service was good but the food quality was not very good. Both the meat and sides were over cooked and very dry.
Service wasn’t great but it was busy. food was delish!
This experience wasn't the best one that we have had at the Pit. It was disappointing to get luke warm food, even though we were later brought hot side dishes. I was told that the ribs were dry, and as for others, the brisket wasn't the best either. Two people had the catfish and they were highly disappointed at what is considered a serving for the fish. Hopefully when and if we return, the experience will be better.
Brisket was OUT OF THIS WORLD! Service was slow, but it was a busy Friday night.
Food is always pretty good but past few visits the service has been slow. Just make sure you have the time and not rushed and you should be fine. Ribs are great....
Never had southern BBQ before but everything here was amazing. The food was fantastic. Free biscuits and hush puppies. Great pork BBQ. Our server was on top of things despite being very busy.
Food was not hot, service was slow to non existent. Maybe we caught them on a bad night.
Food was just okay. Everything else was great.
Terry made my fiance's 45th birthday an amazing experience. The Pit of Durham is fa-bu-lous!
The food came out very quickly. The restaurant filled up quickly after our arrival. I have had much better BBQ and it was ok. The sides were very disappointing. I won’t be returning anytime soon after hearing a lot or great reviews.
Food was great. Too noisy as a very large group was seated next to us
My husband and I came in on a whim while visiting Durham from Ohio and absolutely did not regret it! The service was amazing and the food even better! He got the ribs and I got the brisket... everything was cooked perfectly and the sauce (atleast for my brisket) was sooooo good! When we come back to Durham we will definitely be stopping here again!
When we arrived we were seated immediately. The table was dirty and I asked the waiter to clean the table. When the food came out there was hair in my tarter sauce on my plate. There was no compensation for the wait or nothing.
The food was amazing, the birthday luncheon was amazing, location great. The hair incident we let go so we could have a good time.
Urban setting, hard for us to find parking but they had valet parking when we went. Staff was friendly and prompt. Mini hush puppies were great. First time having North Carolina bbq. Enjoyed the experience. We would go back if ever back in Durham.
Excellent food and great service. Very accommodating for our seating arrangements.
It was good basic bbq with a nice variety of sides including fried okra, collard greens, sweet potato fries, and more. The hush puppies were delicious. But our waitress was HORRIBLE. Our glass was empty 90% of the meal. She never came back and was very rude. The food runners and other wait staff were very nice and helpful.
Not the same experience than last time. Food came late, cold, not tasty at all. Beer came after the main course, and it was very difficult to have a servant. We were sit in front of a window, freezing!!!
Wasn't amazing. Brought a birthday cake for my husband and the server brought it out, in the box, with the candles still in the package and said he "couldn't find a lighter to light the candles"...
Place is definitely a more upscale for a bbq joint. The bbq itself was okay. Pulled pork was nice and smokey but the brisket was definitely overdone and not a trace of smoke or bark. Sides and service were very good.
The atmosphere is pleasant at the Pit. Being able to make reservations, helps plan your night out if you are limited on time. The barbeque pork is the best option at this restaurant. It's not the best barbeque in Durham, but it definitely is good. They also have good options for kids.
The food was great and the service was outstanding!
Our waiter was outstanding, we were pleased with the food and verything was hot and delicious!! The staff is exceptional and it is a really warm and inviting atmosphere . We hope to be back soon!! Def worth the drive we made to dine , 3 .5 hour drive!!😊
The food was terrible. Service was very good, but that doesn’t make up for food. Better step up their game to keep up with Durham foodies
This would easily be a 4 or 5 star rating if I had only selected the Eastern NC pulled BBQ plate - it is simply some of the best BBQ this NC-native has had: truly spectacular! However, I opted for the combo plate and the brisket was horribly overcooked with no visible remnant of a smoke ring. It was very tough and chewy and I informed my server of this shortcoming. The sides were also wonderful: I had collards and fried okra, both of which were very nicely done. The black eye was clearly the cuts of brisket I was served.
To be clear, I would return to The Pit again and keep my focus on their pork BBQ and to explore other sides. The location and environment were nicely done and the valet service was extremely helpful.
Nice restaurant, friendly atmosphere and good food
Poor experience from start to finish. So bad, it became comical. They lost our reservation, served us the wrong meals, and our waiter disappeared mid meal. After we accidentally spilled a glass of ice water, we flagged down a busboy who handed us extra napkins then turned to wipe down the empty tables around us! Food was so-so.
Food cold, chicken dry and brisket not smoked to tenderness... short on wat staff
Customer service not good waited too long for food. Heard customers complaining about wait time for food. Should label sauces. Mixed drinks were average for the price
Very good birthday dinner for my sister
Our first time at the Pit and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our waiter was excellent, friendly, knowledgeable and patient with newbies! Highly recommend it and will go back.
The Pit is a great restaurant if you are looking for GOOD LOCAL BBQ... I recommend you try the Double/Triple Combo or even the Big Boy Plate to get a chance to taste all the wonderful meats they have and you also get two side, hushpuppies and biscuits with butter.
When we arrived there were to parties in front of us, the host and hostess were nowhere to be found. When the hostess showed up, she had a very bad demeanor, never greeted us -or the people in front of us. She sat the first party, the host showed up, much better attitude, seated the next party. The hostess came back, just looked at us. I mentioned we had a reservation at 7 (it was exactly 7 at this point), she found the reservation, asked if she could seat us at the high-top tables; when making the reservation this question is asked, I had purposely selected the regular tables in the restaurant, so I said no, that we would prefer a regular table as per our reservation, she looked over to the restaurant, where there were 10+ open tables and said it would be a minute. She went over and cleaned a table (the booth with the shortest "cut-out" seat, there were four of us... this would be fine if there hadn't been 10 other tables she could have seated us at). We sat down, the server came, took our drink order. Throughout the night she tried to refill our water several times, but never thought to bring us utensils or napkins. She brought the drinks, still no utensils; biscuits and butter; still no utensils; she took our food order. Someone else brought our food -still no utensils- so we asked, they brought utensils, two of us had a half-rack of baby back ribs, we only had butter knives... had to ask for serrated knives. The Brunswick stew was cold, had to ask for it to be taken back and reheated. The fried chicken was dry, the ribs were rubbery, the mac and cheese was a bland congealed ball. the stew was ok once I got a warm serving. The best thing was probably the biscuits. Considering each dish is 14+and we weren't able to eat more than 1/4 of what we ordered, I would say the value was very low. We will not be visiting the Pit in Durham again. Service was bad, the food was worse.
Fast service and the food is just the best!
This is our 3rd visit to this location. Each time we dine it’s noticeably becoming inconsistent with what The Pit’s food tasted like before. The first visit was amazing. Second was horrible, but we like the cornbread and ambience so we said we will give them another try. Sunday’s visit, was about the same. Maybe the recipes need re-evaluating for better consistency. I hate to see this place become a has-been or worse case scenario, an afterthought.
