The Pit - Durham
The Pit has been a favorite of ours since we moved to North Carolina in 2013. However, our last experience was really bad - there's no other way to put it. We had reservations for my 30th birthday, with guests from out of town that we wanted to impress with one of our favorite BBQ restaurants. The service was slow and non-responsive. I understand that Saturday evenings are busy, but this went beyond that. Food was forgotten for some, leaving other diners feeling awkward about enjoying their own meals. Drinks were incorrect, sauces and extra 'asks' were not provided unless we repetitively asked. And quite honestly, this experience made the food not taste as good as it usually does. Also, my husband had arranged for a surprise cake to be delivered, and he shared with me afterwards that the person he spoke with on the phone hung up on him when trying to arrange this surprise. The waiter then forgot about the cake being a surprise, and ruined my husband's plan. The waiter didn't apologize for any of the inconveniences, and often we had to get up from the table to find him. We will definitely think twice about visiting the Pit in the near future. Incredibly bummed.
Great BBQ and the service was fantastic.
We've enjoyed our multiple visits and meals! Love it and will be back.
Restaurant accepted my reservation and closed.
recently visited prior to our visit to DPAC for the first time. We informed the staff that we were in a hurry--trying to make it to a 7:30 show. Staff seemed unorganized and it seemed understaffed. We asked three staff members the best way to get to DPAC and no one knew. It was less than a mile away. I would have expected staff to know. Unimpressed...
Food was good, but not hot, everything seemed like it had been sitting. Would have been great if freshly made. Cake was bad. Tasted like it was cut and sitting in fridge. Waiter was sarcastic when we asked to split check but he didn't ask us how we were paying.
Enjoy eating here. Food is consistently good. Service is polite, friendly and attentive
Tasty barbecue, yummy and biscuits, delicious fried green tomatoes
Been to the Raleigh location and remembered much better.
Brought an out-of-town guest to showcase a local icon and was very disappointed - 'share plates' were actually small bowls - no way could serve 4 as suggested, food was warm at best, got hush-puppies when all but done with meal, ribs were very dry, creamed corn was just bland, never got waters refilled, and sauces were under-whelming.
Was not that crowded so should had little reason for any of the above.
Valet (although free) took well over 10+ mins to come with car - his partner did three in same time.
Fun atmosphere. Good southern cooking. And Our waiter “Fred” was awesome.....very very friendly and informative. Made great menu suggestions.
This was our last meal at the Pit. While the quality and food and service have been worse every time we have visited, this was was beyond bad. The service was horrible. The food was dry and tasted as if it was leftover.
Waiter was friendly but inattentive. No serving utensils for food. No desert plates . No offer of coffee at end of dinner. Seemed untrained, Total experience not as good as last Thanksgiving. Now unsure for next year.
This review is based on a first time visit to the Durham location, reservation only holiday meal. As a frequent patron of the Raleigh location, I was incorrect in assuming the Durham location would be just as great as Raleigh. Raleigh’s location was booked for the holiday meal so I booked an available table with The Pit in Durham. The hostesses were not very welcoming and borderline rude. Given the enormous portions, the quality of the food was truly just average and very disappointing. Quantity does not equal quality. Our server was the most pleasant experience on this visit to this location. Zero comparison to the Raleigh location.
Dinner was very good. Very good service. Second thanksgiving dinner st this location and would recommend....the only complaint would be dessert very small slices of pie...
Awesome Thanksgiving Dinner! Delicious food & beverages, fun atmosphere and excellent service. Great holiday meal!
The Pit is awesome. Truly one of the best places to eat in Durham with some of, if not, the best barbecue in town.
The food was disappointing. The brisket and pulled pork were both very dry. It was definitely not fork tender which was a disappointment since I had the brisket at the Raleigh location a few months ago and it was great.
Food was good. Portion sizes in double combo were pretty small. Service slowed as seats filled. Will definitely go back; there were several things on the menu I still want to try.
Thank you to our server for providing attentive service. This was a business meeting dinner and went very well.
A great place to meet family and friends for a great meal.
Service was terrible. My girlfriend ordered three different glasses of wine only for the waiter to return each time to tell her they didn't have it. Said waiter also took 15 minutes to come collect my card after bringing the check.
All the food was great, but the "brown" (skin added) chopped pork needed more skin and the skin was allowed to get soggy. Way to noisy for a conversation; why would I go to a restaurant to yell at my friend's?!? The ventilation system leaked on us but that was quickly fixed by the waiter.
The only issue was my sautéed veges were really over cooked! And the black eyed peas were mushy
Awesome ribs and chicken, the best in town. Price for two with 5 beers was only 65 usd, very recommended.
The food was delicious as always!
The food was so great ans our server (Ike?) was so good. He was thorough and wanted to make sure we enjoyed our meal.
The food was excellent , very authentic.
The only reason I did not give 5 stars for service the the horrific hostesses. The 2 women working the front were perhaps the most unfriendly I have come across in awhile. I feel like we were bothering them trying to check in for our reservation.
I used to love the Pit, but the food quality was really not great this time or last. The food just didn't seem fresh or well prepared. The space is great and the servers were very attentive, but the food was greasy (not in a good way), and either over or undercooked. When it first opened the food was much better.
Great service and excellent fried chicken!
We had a great time although with some funny quirks. My boyfriend didnt enjoy his food, but they were great about letting him switch it out with no problem. Our appetitizer, the smoked wings, were delicious! I got beef brisket with bbq baked beans and mashed potatoes with gravy. The potatoes were really good. The beans on the other hand were not warm and not fully cooked through. But again, they were great about letting me switch it out. Also, great cocktails! We enjoyed the ones we had. We will definitely be back. Cant knock any stars for our experience.
Excellent from beginning to end
I love The Pit but this evening the food was not up to par, with the exception of the fried chicken which was EXCELLENT the rest of the meal was lacking. The ribs, brisket, wings, barbecued chicken was all dry and over cooked. The collard greens were so salty they were inedible. The Mac n cheese was dry. I will be back as this is not typical.
Attended the Monday night Banjos and Beers event on the roof.
Portios were not enough for 4 people as was stated. We had to order almost two of everything and was brought 2 pieces of chicken which we were told would serve 4!!!!
I had high hopes for the Pit, which looked yummy and had great reviews but was unfortunately pretty disappointed with the experience. Here are the highlights:
- Service was extraordinarily slow and when the entrees finally came, they were cold and my side dishes weren’t ready, even after all that time!
- Despite being hyped up by the server, the classic table homemade BBQ sauces were mediocre at best
- The cocktails were weak and too sweet
The saving graces were the appetizers and biscuits/hush puppies - everything we got (deviled eggs, wings, cornbread, green tomatoes) was great on that front!
Food was just ok. I NEVER have to go back
This is a great place for dinner. They have tasting food, friendly staff. My family and I will definitely be returning. I recommend you check it out if you're in Durham.
Very good food but they said they ran out of desert when we finished our meal. That was bit of a let down since we weren’t aware of another local spot for desert. But overall. Food was really good and didn’t take too long to come out.
This was our first time dining at the Durham location. We were at the Raleigh location just a couple of weeks before this. We had the sharing plates of fried chicken and rough-chopped Lexington pork shoulder "browns". Whereas the chicken in Raleigh was moist, tender and well-breaded, the chicken in Durham was extremely dry... maybe overcooked or just reheated. I thought the pork shoulder would be a real treat, given that I love what's referred to as char on smoked pork, but every single morsel required a chew-fest... simply awful! We were there at 6:00 on a Saturday night, so you'd think their best kitchen staff would be on hand. At least the table service was great. Wow, do we miss Ed Mitchell!
My husband and I had a great time there celebrating our wedding anniversary. We had our wedding reception there and just like then the staff really took care of us. I also loved that I could make the reservation online. We love this place for various reasons but I love that they have several non-pork meat choices (I don't eat pork) and I especially love the smoked, chopped turkey bbq!!!!
Delicious ribs and fried okra. Great whiskey smash drink. Very cool waiter. Nice find in NC!
