The Pit - Durham
From the Valet to the front desk to the waiter, it was a great experience. The food was delicious and the waiter was very helpful with deciding what sauces would pair with our menu choices
Didn't give it 5 star since the pulled pork we fairly dry, fried okra was very salty and Brunswick stew came with just a big hunk of meat and broth (those it tasted good).
The Pit has THE. BEST. barbecue anywhere. We always opt for the chopped pork or the ribs. We have never been disappointed. Add some pumpkin cornbread and you’ll have the complete experience. Yum!
This time and the last I visited, the food was mediocre. Fried chicken dry, beef brisket fatty, beans undercooked, and all of it not very warm. The sharing size is to serve 4, but they are 4 very small portions. Hush puppies were the best part.
Service was excellent, food was hot and good and waiter was AWESOME!!! I enjoyed this location more than the Raleigh location.
Based upon a recommendation from the hotel I was staying at we decided to try The Pit. The drive there was short but through a neighborhood that was not what I was expecting. Once at the restaurant the food and service was very good. The area around The Pit looked like a good area to hang out
Great service, good food, decent beer selection.
The food was just barely warm and you could tell it had been sitting waiting for delivery to table. I ordered caroling ribs but receives baby back ribs.
The BBQ soul rolls were super tasty, as were the smoked chicken wings. Large portions of food. Did not need to wait for a table at lunch time.
We have been to the Pit several times. This trip with friends was our recommendation. We were disappointed. The sides we're not good. Okra appeared to be frozen and prebreaded. Brunswick stew watery. Beans underdone and somewhat crunchy.
Good selection of various barbecued meats with tasty side dishes. Good portions. Wish I had saved some room for dessert. Complementary valet parking. Needed a another attendant on the parking, the one guy was going non-stop and it was a hot day so he could have used some help.
The Pit was amazing. The complimentary valet was fantastic as there is no parking lot, our server was so informative of all the BBQ sauces and meals, portions, etc., and the overall service was phenomenal. Not only did everything come out accurately but the food was fantastic and reasonably priced. Cannot recommend this place enough.
Food was uninspired. The Pit used to be the place for barbecue in the Triangle, but they seem to be sitting back on their laurels a bit.
Fried chicken was cooked to death, and pulled pork was dry.
The highlight was the fried pimento cheese appetizer.
Service was very good, but the food... The Pit can do better - I know it because I've had spectacular meals there in the past.
As always, great food and service. The complimentary valet parking is a huge help.
We love the Pit!
Ordered the brisket. What arrived on my plate was three slabs of fat and raw.
First time! Very impressed with wait staff. Knowledgeable but not pushy. And good service. Our server was Kiera. We wanted to try different meats, so we shared a big plate of meats, and had leftovers for the next evening. Not only was the chicken, brisket, pulled pork and Carolina ribs fabulous, the 3 bbq sauces, all made in house, were a hit as well!! We will return many times!
Food was good but it was entirely too noisy to carry on a conversation....If you want quiet or even normal chatter don't go there.
Best Fried Chicken in NC
Great Service and Food!
Our go-to for mouth-watering BBQ. The sides are equally as good. Always a great experience!
The pull pork and Carolina style ribs were wonderful. The sharing menu is great for serving family style for a larger group.
I've eaten here before. Always enjoy the service, bar drinks and the food.
Terrible experience from beginning to end. No greeting ar door (hostesses were gossiping about a previous customer). They got our food order wrong, and were out of several items.
Obnoxious people with kids crawling under the tables and running in the aisles.
Our service was pretty awful. We sat for over an hour without food, and once our food got to us, it wasn’t hot, making us wonder how long it had been sitting out waiting to be brought to our table. Our server seemed overworked and we had to ask several times for basics like water and bread.
Great pulled pork and sides. Service was excellent. Beer menu had a great selection of craft beers. Went on a Saturday night and even though it was full it didn't feel overly crowded. Definitely recommend.
Enjoyed my meal especially the red pepper sauce that comes with the fried green tomatoes! Ordered the double meat platter with 2 sides which is a lot of food. Well, I substituted one meat for 1/2 rack of ribs for $3.99 up charge. Staff was very nice and answered all my questions! They advertise they use the whole pig, well "Everything but the squeal!"
We love the Pit, come often with friends and guests. For the first time this past week the service was extraordinarily slow and inattentive. Food delivery slow. Kitchen and wait staff seemed over-stressed.
Terrific food!!! And a fabulous server who helped narrow down choices - there were too many good options!
Very noisy and our party of 6 found it hard to talk across table at 6-7pm.
Plenty of food on plate!
I had double combo with Excellent pulled pork, beef brisket, fried okra, collards, hush puppies and biscuits. I paired my combo with bourbon chosen from an extensive list. Topped off with huge slice of rich chocolate cake which I shared with my wonderful wife! Friendly and attentive service throughout.
We've been to The Pit in Raleigh many times and it's usually always very good. This is our second visit to this location in Durham. It was a little after 1:00 on Sunday and the place was almost empty. We had a number of different dishes and the quality of the meal was quite varied. Some of the food was warm, others had dishes that were barely room temperature. The basket of hush puppies had clearly been sitting under a heat lamp for far too long. The Brussel sprouts were barely cooked....no need to go on and no need to come back.
Everything was great but every time I use opentable to make a reservation here I get an email saying I didn’t attend and reminding me about the no show policy. The hostess actually said my name and the number of my party and checked me in so what gives? My party and I left our table and went to use the bathroom before leaving and forgot our to go food (almost a whole rack of ribs and 2 sides!) not even 5 minutes went by before I realized and the host said they probably threw it out of the table was cleared. Didn’t even check and if it was thrown out also- what gives ! People run back for their food all the time! So I lost probably 20 dollars worth of food because they couldn’t hold it for me for 10 minutes to see if I’d come back for it. Lame.
Grewat Food and atmosphere! Warm hush puppies with honey butter can’t be beat! Collards were especially good! BBQ ribs and chicken delicious!!
Excellent experience. Took a friend, visiting from out of town, and everything was great. Food came out quickly. There was a small issue with one of the plates, but the manager quickly came through with a resolution. The service was great. The staff super friendly. I’ll continue frequenting The Pit in Durham.
Overall great food and environment. The service was rather lackluster. Our server was a bit spacey and seemed overwhelmed. He also rarely came around to check on our dining experience.
We usually eat at Raleigh location. The chopped turkey and greens were good. The baked beans were hard but flavorful. The fries were soggy not good at all. The ribs were tough. The atmosphere was nice and spacious.
The food was very good, our waitress was excellent, however it was a little too noisy for my taste. We were there for a get together with family and it was difficult to hear each other.
Ok, experience. The staff was a bit confused on where to seat us. However, mgmt intervened and solved the problem.
I've been coming to the pit since we moved here in 2016. Friday, April 20th My husband and I plus our 5 year old got the 1/2 rack baby back ribs each. My 5 years olds ribs were the only ones that were edible. My husband and my ribs unfortunately were DRY. I wish we had sent them back right at that moment vs. spending the $35-$40 for our entrees that didn't meet expectations. It was a Friday night, busy, and I wasn't up for the fight. The server and ambiance were great as usual. Sucks the food was not good.
