About The Pass
Bringing the essence of the kitchen to each table, chefs will serve, describe and answer diner's questions, creating an authentic experience for each customer while placing emphasis on the process behind transitioning food to plate. Similar to dining at a chef's table, diners will be able to connect with the local and global inspiration and experience of each chef and behind every dish, in an upscale, casually elegant atmosphere, complimented by a thoughtful international wine list.

The Pass Ratings and Reviews
The vegetarian menu was very good. Their use of simple ingredients really helped to keep the dishes light and not too heavy. My favorite was the tempura romanesco with edible flowers, curried raisins and pickled barley. I was surprised at the chew of the barley. It gave the dish a little more weight and made the course more filling. Their play with textures was good with each dish too, varying from chewy, crunchy and smooth. I'm not a massive fan of dairy because of its heaviness, but the dishes did not use an excessive amount of cheese or diary products - just enough to provide a tangy and sharp taste.
It was a nice quiet setting - perfect for a date.
The waiters were all very knowledgable and the service was very good.
The secret door to the dining room is neat. The atmosphere is fine, but quite loud as the tables are close to each other. I guess they try to fit as many tables as possible in the room. If you sit next to the kitchen, you would be able to be see how they prepare the food. The value for the food is average. It’s like you get what you pay for. The food is mostly earth tone in colors, not very appealing. On one dish, they cover 90% of ingredients with a huge black blob which turns out to be quite salty. Overall taste for the dishes is bland. Wine paring is above average. I would come back here just for wines.
Our experience at The Pass was nothing short of amazing. The food was outstanding, and the service was impeccable. We did the wine and cocktail pairings along with our tastings, and it was such a fun and enjoyable dinner. Also, the ambience was perfect - not too quiet, not too pretentious, just perfect. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone and everyone looking for an upscale dining experience!
We enjoyed every course! My partner ordered a glass of wine off the menu and I took the pairings--this gave us a chance to share a bit without having too much. The wines paired beautifully and were very different from each other. After, with a little browsing, I found that several were quite difficult or impossible to buy even online, without ordering internationally. So a great chance to try new tastes. Service was courteous, very well-informed, patient with questions, efficient but unhurried. Great team effort.
We have been before and had an excellent experience, so our expectations were high. This time we invited extended family, and ended up being embarrassed in front of them by our service. We asked a question about the possibility of changing some of the menu items for our daughters who decided to join us last minute. We were simply curious if it was a possibility, and would have been fine if he just said it wasn’t possible. But, the manager responded very rudely. He approached our table and said: “it appears you are confused by our service here... we can put you in our other restaurant if this menu doesn’t suit you”. It was said in an aggressive manner and my sister-in-law almost reprimanded him on the spot, but we convinced her not to due to the fact that we were trying to celebrate my husbands 50th birthday. It really cast a shadow on the entire evening, and on our memory of our first experience there... which had been wonderful. I won’t be able to recommend The Pass anymore.
Our third anniversary celebrated at The Pass. They always surprise and delight with their creative use of ingredients and presentation. Wine pairings are great and usually something we have never tried. Very comfortable setting and the service is excellent and friendly. Our 5 course meal paired with wines was $105 per person which was a bargain given the quality, service and atmosphere. We are big fans. Definitely will return for our next anniversary.
For a New Year's Eve dining, they were ON.
(Most NY Eve's are extreme disappointments!)
6 of the 7 courses were fabulous (skip the squab, tough, and tasteless)
Even with one course miss the other 6 were unique and extremely flavorable.
Still one of the best in Houston for fine dining.
Excellent, knowledgable service.
Second visit to this restaurant. Both times to celebrate Anniversary. Very nice atmosphere and ambience and service very attentive but food not quite as delicious as 1st time around. On the tasting menu, two of the five dishes were great but the other three not quite knock your socks off tasting (at least not these socks).
Beautiful setting, love the styling, good atmosphere. The staff tries very hard, plenty of staff, would not say greatest service ever though.
Really like not having too much choice. There's a meat/fish tasing menu and a vegetarian menu. Can expect the kitchen to focus their efforts on a few things only and have the best quality and results. I thought 4 of the 5 courses were very good, loved the ravioli filled with pork, but thought the first course, the shrimp, was unworthy and below par (simply said, one gulf shrimp, cut in 4 and a few sauce dots placed around it) and a underwhelming start of the dinner.
I would give them another try depending on the courses offered and I would also be tempted to try the vegetarian option. Nevertheless a very refreshing 'European' experience as an alternative to the abundance of steak, BBQ and mexican restaurants we end up at too often.
Hadn't been in maybe a year. Was pleasantly surprised that pricing was more reasonable - in fact, a bargain. $65/head + optional $40/head for wine or beverage pairing.
You can select the protein or slightly smaller veg tasting menu. All 4 of us chose the former. All the food was creative and tasty. Service very good.
Only down was slow on cocktails and 2 of the 4 were not up to par (the waiter said "no one has ever ordered that before" - that was a clue).
Place was almost packed but you could still converse.
A very enjoyable meal and certainly in the top 10 dining spots in Houston.
The Pass remains one of our favorite restaurants to celebrate special occasions! We love an extended menu of exquisite dishes with paired wines (quite hard to find in Houston!). Our server was very accommodating when we asked to leave some time in between the different courses, that was great! After all these years, still the same point of criticism: it would be so nice if you would serve some amuse-bouches with the champagne! It would make a great meal closer to perfection! One other disappointment: we added the cheese option to our menu ($15/person), but that turned out to be a lot of bread with only one small piece of cheese...
My husband and I took a work colleague and his wife to dinner as a thank you for a very large favor. The food was incredible, and proven so as one in our party is a less adventurous eater, and was won over to new experiences with each dish. The service was exceptional from the moment we arrived until we left--truly one of the best meals we have had in our lives. At the high cost, it won't be a regular stop for us, but if you're looking for a special experience and incredible quality, you won't be disappointed.
Reservation was booked over 2 weeks in advance, yet we were forced to wait over 45 mins for our table and even with that it took 3 separate requests to finally get to our table. Additionally, when we checked in right on time, we were told that they were just setting up our table and that it would take a few minutes, which ended up being over 45 mins. No explanation given for wait other than they were busy and no concessions made. I've been here several times over the years and it has become more and more pretentious as the food has worsened. We will will never go back.
