The Painted Burro Ratings and Reviews
Couldn't get an 11:30am brunch reservation, so made a 1:30pm. Arrived at 11:30 and they were able to seat us immediately and move my reservation. The place was hopping however. Good volume of voice chatter, but me and my guest could still hear each other.
The breakfast special was absolutely delicious. Also got a sangria that was quite tasty. Service was attentive but the server was a little impersonal. It was busy so he was talking to us to tell us the specials but was looking around. Whatever, its a busy kind of joint. Mixed crowd of all ages. Just a fun place to be.
We drove from Boston, 21 minutes to get there and it was definitely worth it. Parking is free on Sundays, so that makes it super great too; to go for the Sunday brunch. Otherwise, Davis Square can get dicey for parking.
Due to the popularity, the Painted Burro can get a bit loud. However, the service was awesome, the food was delicious, and the drinks were fantastic! I did brunch here for the first time with a couple of friends and we will definitely be coming back. I highly recommend the crab cake benedict.
I’ve been here many times before with my wife and they have never disappointed. The food and drinks were on amazing as always. The wait staff was on point, surprising me with how fast drinks and appetizers came out. Our waitress was top notch and never let us down despite the restaurant being very busy. Thanks Painted Burro for keeping a standard others should aspire to obtain.
I've been going to Painted Burro for years. It's the perfect place to grab dinner on a week night when you don't feel like cooking because it isn't too crowded, and the food is excellent. Note, if you have been to Painted Burro in the past, they recently changed their chips. They taste a little more healthy, which I don't like as much. So, fair warning. Don't get as excited as you would have been about endless chips :).
If you want to over pay for medioicre tacos, this is your spot! Service was terrrible. The "chalupas" were comical. This should be on the desert menu. It was basically a fried applie w/ goat cheese on top of a corn pancake. This was a hard no. The shrimp and grits were really good thoough, but those would be the only thing I would order again.
This is our second visit to this lovely restaurant. In the past, a number of restaurants have disappointed us in the second visit. They are still outstanding in the service and most foods. Do not miss their special ceviche (this time, it was tuna and mango ceviche). Also recommend Cholo corn cob and tacos.
So it was my birthday and we made a reservation for 6! There were like two servers for a Sunday night. At the beginning we were calling the server everytime a person arrived to the table but after, our server was exceptional very friendly, fast, anticipating with all our needs. I don’t remember his name but he is great with recommendations and all answers with allergies. The food is amazing! We tried elotes, empanadas, carne asada, tacos and we came out very happy and full! The dulce de tres leches cake is the best!
Came here at 10am for a birthday brunch. It's a little bit restricted in the timings you can choose from when you're with a party of 6+ people but I was not disappointed! The food and drinks were as good as I could have asked for and the prices are pretty decent for the amount of food they give. The blood orange mimosa is great, I only wish it were served in a larger glass!
Really enjoyed this place. I was looking for something interesting near Cambridge for dinner for my wife, son, and I and just happened to notice the listing. So we knew very little about it before going. We all enjoyed it very much and will definitely go back.
I especially liked the shrimp taco and the chorizo taco. The mango guacamole was good but not as exciting to me. My son had the squash enchilada which he really liked. I'm not big on squash but tried it and also liked it very much.
The noise level (at least on a Friday night) is a bit higher than I'd prefer, but I look forward to going back.
I really wanted to love this place. The menu looked awesome and I'd heard great things about it. Some things were great and others were pretty bad.
1. The food was hit or miss. The appetizers and entrees were mostly good--though the carne asada was so ridiculously chewy that I had to cut it into baby pieces so I didn't feel like I was going to choke on it. The homemade chips were amazing. Dessert was 'meh.' The churros were so unbelievably greasy and had a taste of old frying oil. They were inedible. The flan had a nice flavor but an odd texture.
2. What frustrated me most was the service. The servers were all really nice people, but they were not efficient. Dirty dishes remained on our table for way too long. At times servers seemed aimless. We were at the restaurant for 2.5 hours ... much longer than was necessary.
I think I will return and give this another chance because the food was pretty good. Just not a great experience overall given the price.
Painted Burro is always delicious. Their food is fabulous, the decor is fun, and the staff are really friendly and happy. You can get all kinds of creative Mexican food, including a lot of lighter and veggie-friendly dishes. I think it's the best spot in Davis Square.
Food was amazing! You can tell each dish was design with thought. Each plate has an interesting choice of ingredients that mixes various flavors. I personally love hints of sweetness from fruits.
Drink menu can accommodate absolutely anyone! There are so many options.
We really enjoyed dinner and drinks! Service was friendly, food was creative and very tasty, and margaritas were delicious. The nachos were one of the best we've ever had, with jalapeno slaw, two types of beans, guacamole and overall terrific flavor. Portions and quality of food were reasonably priced. Overall, a fun, casual ambience--we will return!
I love everything about the Painted Burro except the noise. It can be so loud that you can't hear your friends at the same table, and you leave with your ears ringing. Maybe more sound proofing in the ceiling tiles? or introducing booths or other structures to reduce echo and reverberation? If it were just slightly quieter I'd head there for many more dinners!
I usually love the Painted Burro, but last Friday the waiter never stopped by to fill up water glasses and I was dehydrated the entire time. The white wine was awful, and the food was not great. It's a fun place to meet up with friends, but I'm not impressed with the quality and value of the food.
Food, service and ambiance all great. Options terrific. Staff Wonderful. At times very, very loud. I would love it totally if they could section off a few tables or a section for quiet engagement. But with or without the noise, the food is great and the people there very nice and helpful.
Delicious, inventive food, and excellent service as always. I was able to order something lighter from the menu. My 5-year old loved her bean and cheese quesadilla from the kid's menu. Eating at 5:30 on a holiday monday, we found the place pleasantly uncrowded and quiet. By the time we left, it was filling up.
