The Mill Room at Boar's Head Resort
Service was excellent. Food was served nice & hot. We were there 2 nights. Our complaint was both nights the ventilation was poor. Smelled very “ fishy”. It was in the middle of the week. Not many people there. Overall, we enjoyed the Boar’s Head! We will go back!
The service was good. Very friendly. Some if the food was excellent (the salmon). The chicken was burned and the rice was not really cooked.
We have been enjoying a holiday meal at the Boar's Head inn for the past 5 years. Since the renovation, this was our first time back. The seating areas are nice. It seems to lack the ambience and overall feel of the past. It just didn't feel as special this time. Our server was attentive, but little touches from days of the past seem to be gone. For example, we used to get a small sample appetizer "complements of the chef" and the manager used to visit the tables. These things seem to have changed and the atmosphere is more casual than it used to be. Sad to see the old hospitality that we've come to expect change.
Recommendation would caveat cuisine (southern emphasis may not be everyone's cup of tea). Also, main dining room has casual, almost sports bar ambience if you're looking for a more elegant space. We asked for music to be turned down and it was adjusted. Staff was ftiendly and pleasant.
Overall very good. However, customers should be warned about hidden meat in salads, etc. We are vegetarians and my wife was quite surprised to find chicken in the apple/cranberry salad. It is very annoying to remove food from one's mouth! Please label dishes correctly and completely.
I was also surprised that the maitre'd took no corrective action after I informed him of the problem. Not a good reaction from an otherwise pleasant individual.
New Years !! Fab choices for a memorable evening !
Our dinner was a ten! Our service from Marilyn was superb. The bar made a couple cocktails to order, whiskey sour with egg white, and a fresh grapefruit gin mix - both were excellent. Salmon cooked to perfection. We will be back soon.
I like the renovations, but really wish they had brought the lunch buffet back. The menu is limited and doesn't have much on it that I like. The chicken pot pie was really good
My late wife of 44 years honeymooned at the Boars Head in 1969. We returned often including our 25th anniversary. The Inn and Mill Room always exceeded our expectations. My recent visit with our Son was no exception
Very good service and excellent Bloody Marys. Root vegetable hash not great. Other food not fabulous. The buffet looked better. Somewhat disappointing.
We have been coming to Boars head around Christmas time for several years now, except last year during remodeling. I was disappointed that the selection is not a large as in the past and with the open skillet type buffet, I think my food was cooler than in the past with the covered lids. I was very fortunate to come on a day the peanut soup was "soup of the day", as I always look forward to that and it is no longer a guaranteed to be on the bar. And last, but my favorite, the bread pudding was and still is amazing!!! Service was excellent too.
My UVA fourth year friend wrapped his finals, so I wanted to celebrate before everybody goes home for Christmas. The Boar’s Head Resort and The Mill Room restaurant’s holiday ambiance is without peer. Beautiful! Our table and overstuffed seating exceptionally comfortable. The buffet was one of the best I have ever enjoyed. On my plates, an omelette, sausages, bacon, prime rib w/ horseradish sauce, eggs Benedict, hash browns, fruit, cheeses and salads. Mimosas accompanied brunch followed by coffee and 3 desserts after. The Boar’s Head Mill Room is now on short rotation.
You'll notice that is no longer the OLD Mill Room, it's now just the Mil Room. They jazzed it up and removed the old-style dark wood and other features that made it a very pleasant, cozy place for a comfortable dinner. There are now booths (previously all individual tables) and a bar in the main dining room with a TV over it.
I'm sure this means they are keeping up with the times, but if you miss the slightly stodgy Old Mill Room (as I do), this may not be the place for you.
Food is uniformly good, and excellent service, with great attention paid to dietary restrictions if you have them.
As a sports club member I am extremely disappointed in the breakfast in The Mill Room. The decor was fine, it has been better in prior years. The buffet is EXTREMELY overpriced and the quality and selection available is POOR. I would compare it to a hot bar at any random hotel free breakfast. But it was NOT free.
The only bright spot was the service.
Food is as wonderful as ever and the new renovations are lovely.
Very disappointing experience in contrast to prior years. The holiday buffet was significantly smaller than before and did not include the legendary peanut soup - rather it is now available for an up charge. Staff are not nearly as professional as before and service standards fell well below expectations (drinks not refilled promptly, silverware not exchanged after each plate).
Great service and ambiance. Wait staff was very accommodating. The only area for improvement: The entree foods on the buffet were in cast iron containers but were barely warm at best. The food was very good tasting however. Would have liked to have seen more green vegetables, most foods were starches (gnocchi, potato gratin, beans and sweet potatoes) all of which were excellent!
We were disappointed with the buffet because the parmesan risotto was undercooked and crunchy, and the butternut squash bisque was actually the peanut soup. It was mislabled on the table. The peanut soup, salmon and desserts were very good.
I went to today for a Christmas lunch. The decorations are beautiful as I knew they would be. I have been several times since the reopening and those experiences have been great. Today, however, was a different story. The service was horrible! They were busy but not what you would expect to warrant such bad service.
We went to celebrate a birthday. The ambiance was perfect, we enjoyed the relative quiet, and even the sounds were the solo guitarist alternating Christmas songs with Beatles songs. The food was excellent and the service fabulous. All in all, a great place for a special celebration.
The service was impeccable. There is a new seasonal menu that offers a nice selection. We really enjoyed the whole experience.
Great food service and quaffable selections. The staff are wonderful. Table 45 is our seating selection. Enjoy the remodeling after you let go of the past charm. The new look has it’s charm warmth and character of its own. Looking forward to returning for another sublime dining experience. T2Map
We had a girl's day out lunch at the Boar's Head, and very much enjoyed our visit. The Inn was decorated for the holidays, and the newly renovated dining rooms are lovely, and comfortable. They offered a lunch buffet the day we were there, and all of the food looked great. We elected to choose off the a la carte menu because the price of the buffet was kind of high for lunch, and none us were really big eaters. However, the place was very busy with work and other groups out celebrating the holidays, and they were all taking advantage of the buffet. Service was excellent, not over-the-top attentive...just right. My fried green tomato BLT was good, not fantastic. Same with the chicken pot pie, and the mixed green salad with goat cheese and salmon. We have dined here for dinner and the food was very good...of the quality similar to what they I had observed at the lunch buffet.
Food was excellent - highly recommend the Filet Mignon, Fried Southern Lobster and French Fries!!
The price was way to high for the food quality. Specifically asked for no mushrooms and got mushrooms. The wait staff took my food to the back rinsed of the mushrooms and replated but didn't get all the mushrooms. So disappointed in what was a special occasion. The desert was not that good either nor the appetizer. The food not freshly prepared.
The menu is very limited, and I did not think the food was all that good. The noise level in the room was very loud. In all, not a great lunch space, my opinion.
I took my wife there for her birthday lunch. The table and view were exceptional. Their fried oyster starter was not on the lunch menu, but they prepared them anyway. My wife enjoyed her skillet pot pie. We sat by the fire for coffee and hot chocolate after the meal. It was a very pleasant afternoon and the service was excellent. We can’t wait to return.
A lovely experience at the Boar’s Head. It had an upgrade since our last visit. The outer room with its Apple green decor was cheerful for our brunch. Excellent food. Cheese board was particularly nice. Next time I’ll add the peanut soup. Lamb sliders were very tasty. Attentive service but not intrusive. Next time we’ll try the cozy bar and fireplace room. Lots of seasonal decorations.
This is our second visit to our Mill Room. The first visit was exceptional, the food, the service, the ambiance. We were very excited to come back and even made reservations ahead of time to make sure we will have the table for our Thanksgiving weekend. However, this second visits wasn’t as satisfying as the first time. Some of the same dishes we ordered the first time weren’t as well prepared and tasty. We even had to send back the desert because it was not the same as we previously had it. Unfortunately, we will think twice before making the reservation again even though we really loved this place the first time. I really wish I wouldn’t feel this way because I really had a very memorable experience that we hope to repeat for many other times to come.
I was not impressed with this restaurant as part of the Boars Head Inn. There was nothing special about it and the service, while not really busy, was unacceptable. I think the server was overbooked on tables, thus not giving us the attention we needed. My husband waited almost 30 minutes for a mixed drink!!
They need to do better in their service, otherwise people will go off site, especially for dinner.
We always enjoy the Mill Room, tho it's changed over the years. Glad for vegetarian options.
The guitar entertainer was moderately close. We like the idea but he had his amplifier so loud we could barely have a conversation. Had we been closer we probably would have had to complain or leave.
Always outstanding! Wonderful food and the service is impeccable.
We had a great night and good food as we celebrate my advance birthday. Definitely will be recommending this resort to my friends and family. Planning to come back again.
Delicious menu! Fabulous service! Can be loud in main room if you are taking someone who is hard of hearing. Can't wait to go back!
Steak was tough. Vegetables were under cooked. Bar drink was way too small and service was terrible. Preferred the old mill room.
Wow - This was our first time at the (new) Mill Room and it was fantastic! I love the layout and the atmosphere. We had an amazing meal and and excellent service. Can't wait to return!
Great food pleasant staff and nice atmosphere.
We have an annual outing to the Boar's Head for brunch. Last year they were closed at this time of year so we were excited to be back and looking forward to seeing the renovations. I really miss the old massive doors but I do like the addition of booths. Although the food was perfectly good (not hot but buffets usually aren't) but we enjoyed it. We were disappointed to see that the number of dishes offered was greatly reduced. We had not asked about the price because we erroneously thought it would be about the same as it had been in the past. When we got the bill, it was for almost 50% more than it had been the last time we were there. We felt that the price was much too high for what was on offer.
The service was, as always, absolutely wonderful.
We were there to celebrate our 35th anniversary. The hostess seated us at a booth with a lovely view. Our dessert had Happy Anniversary written on the plate. Very nice touches that made a special evening even more special.
