The Metrograph Commissary
$11 for the endive salad was a joke. They had just a few endives, a smattering of radishes, some olive oil and a teaspoon of sunflower seeds. Total ripoff. Burgers were merely okay for the price. We spent $50 on the salad and two burgers and I left hungry.
Made a reservation an hour before our film. Took them 30 minutes to take our order. By that time they told us it was took late to order any food... we were never able to ear dinner, just some fries...
Outstanding squash blossoms and infused Mezcal cocktail. Good steak and duck. Also, loved the fresh tasting zucchini terrine. The frizzante Gragnano delicious as well as novel. Helpful service. The space is on the second floor of an Art movie house.
We arrived at for our reservation only to be told that the restaurant is closed for a private party. If that wasn't bad enough, the "restaurant manager" told me that it was impossible for us to even have a reservation--even after I showed her my confirmation. Who wants to be called a liar when they arrive at a restaurant for what they're hoping will be a festive evening of good food with friends? If there's confusion with a reservation, a good manager would at least apologize and suggest alternatives. Instead, we were left on a stinky street to fend for ourselves.
And then I remembered the last time I had dinner at Metrograph. The service was terrible and the food was meh. This restaurant is a little bit of flash and absolutely no substance (or taste).
We had a wonderful meal here -- ordered 6 appetizers and 4 entrees among 5 people. The cheeses, stuffed squash blossoms, steak tartar, chicken entree and duck entree were outstanding. Our various cocktails were also memorable. (The spaghetti with plain tomato sauce was just "average" and tomato salad was salty.) Loved the spacious boho atmosphere -- definitely unusual in Manhattan. We chose Metrograph as an excuse to come to this part of the lower east side -- we had noticed the new Essex Market on a taxi ride out to Brooklyn, and realized there was more new stuff in this corner of the city than we knew. Walked back (westward) on Canal, a revelation of trendy bars and chinatown bus companies!
Great food, great drinks, great staff, great look, great atmosphere.
It’s always a lovely experience meeting at the Cmmissary. It’s like being in a 1935 Parisian spot, perfect for discussing the movie or just catching up with friends.
I LOVE Metrograph! I have been there a dozen times and always have a wonderful time! Will be back again soon!
My daughter and I had a lovely Mother’s Day celebratory brunch at the Commissary.
We are bond to do it again next year...
This is a really nice brunch location, with a great atmosphere and delicious food and drinks. I highly recommend it!
Very special place with wonderful atmosphere, terrific staff, and excellent food. Highly recommend.
Great Place. The portions are a little bit small, but all else is excellent. THANKS!
A little hard to access, but Metrograph makes it more than worthwhile. My date and I both agreed the food was about the best we've ever had. We've been back 3 times and plan to go back with friends...
Great ambience. Pleasant lighting and incredible French toast
The Metrograph Commissary has a nice somewhat limited menu and really good food. It can get noisy, making it difficult to talk and it's pricey. If you want to eat and have anything but an entrée it really adds up, and their wine and cocktail prices are exaggerated. Service can be slow depending on how busy they are. However, they do ask if you have a movie ticket and are more attentive if you have to make a show.
disgusting and expensive.
Never had such a bad wine, and cafeteria food for 136 dollars
Good, but the servers couldn’t be bothered.
My favorite place to be in New York. Greatest film programming, incredible food, great drinks, amazing ambience. I wish more things in life were as good as Metrograph.
Love thé place and concept
Excellent food. Wonderful ambiance. I've always had a good experience.
My favorite restaurant in NYC. Vibe is great, food is great, service is the best.
Short Rib was extremely fatty, to the point where it was mostly fat. Need to work on this. Burrata was excellent.
Not sure what happened to the food. Hope there is a different dinner staff. Huevos rancheros were swimming in thin unappetizing liquid.
We had an excellent time at Commissary! I had been to the theater at Metrograph many times but hadn't yet eaten at its restaurant. The seating areas are refreshingly spacious and comfortable, but the space has a good ambiance and a lively level of energy and conversation. The food isn't the absolute best in the area but it's quite good--my only complaint is that the menu is fairly limited. The drinks, however, are excellent (among the best in the area, especially for the price).
This was Christmas Day and Kitchen was way understaffed which resulted in over 40 minutes wait after we ordered.
Really great staff, attentive but not overbearing. I'd advise for a stylish sit down.
This place is everything. From the food to the service to the atmosphere. Forget having a movie theater. It’s all round a great place to hang and feel like your in a French Noir Film.
Loved the food & dark sexy room. Will be returning again soon.
This is my second time for me. the servers are really friendly and food is simply amazing.
Went for a business lunch during the week day at around 1:30p. It was quiet and great for discussion surrounded in a well designed and airy environment. That said, if you're hungry this will not suit. Also, I asked to change something ever so slightly on the menu and the waitress told me that they can't make any changes to the menu. I literally asked for a boiled egg as a side dish. Nope. I ordered their Cesar salad, it was very good but a very small portion.
Get the burger. Not on the menu and it is excellent. Just ask for it.
One of our best experiences. Neat place!
The cauliflower cake was delicious. The beet salad was very good. The pumpkin in browned butter was amazing. The service was very spotty. My friend asked for a seltzer from 3 different waitstaff - and received it by the time we were done with dinner.
Beautiful space with understated decor, friendly and attentive staff, excellent cocktails (I had the Aviation), wonderful food but portions a bit small and pricey. Server asked if we were seeing a film so he could time our order accordingly.
Simple, classic menu is always a hit, the cocktails are inventive and fun, wine list is solid, and they’ll always get you to your movie seat on time.
Excellent spot for brunch after the 11:00 am screening that we saw.
Levels of salt were all over the map - one dish way under salted, another way over. Roasted Chicken, under. Vegetarian dish was in danger of being outstanding but was way too salty. Carrots on the halibut were borderline raw. Everything was good conceptually, but technique was poor. And we had a rookie waiter that couldn’t answer any questions. He didn’t bother to get answers, he just bullshi$$ed or answered curtly. Wanted to like it, but it was hard.
Food is fantastic, and the timing between apps and entrees was perfect. Staff was extremely attentive, and went above and beyond to take care of a minor issue with boxing our leftovers. My favorite place to eat!
We've been longtime customers at the Metrograph, but this was our first time dining at the Commissary. They were lovely over the phone when I needed to switch the reservation. The service was impeccable. The skylight is a dream. The poached eggs were delicious.
