The Maverick was a quaint place for brunch with good food and great service.
I’ve been here before and was blown away by how great everything was. This time I was completely underwhelmed. I didn’t have the heart to send the food back or complain, but the Brussels sprouts were swimming in sauce and not crispy, pork fatty, fish bland. I love the ambiance but it will be awhile before I convince my husband to try it again.
We love the food at the Maverick but the service continues struggle. We waited 10 minutes for a server, then when flagged a server, she said one of their signature drinks was not available. We ordered another then when our "real" server appeared, she said she would get it. She struggled to fill waters, drinks and teas, get our orders straight and then charged us the wrong bill. It was disappointing that the servers don't seem to work as a team to help each other. Love South Town and hope this restaurant makes it.
Amazing — I got the restaurant week menu and other person got some apps
Service, food, and restaurant, one word... perfect!
Oysters and burger were great. Brussel sprouts were burnt. The light needs to be adjusted a bit in the corner by the wine storage. That won’t stop us from going back, but won’t be ordering the Brussel sprouts again.
Really great. Definitely eat here and order food, they are making me write 50 characters, but you should just go try it.
Almost all good. Love the place. This time though they couldn’t quite get the steak temps right across the 3 steaks at our table. Quickly addressed and we were on our way to a great evening.
Excellent food, wonderful staff, intimate setting.
I loved everything about this place. Very professional staff with great service. The food was prepared with excellence. Great atmosphere. The place was packed, but the staff were not overwhelmed. I would call this place a diamond in the rough; it’s a little gem in the midst of a so so neighborhood.
Awesome experience. Recommend sitting in the front room.
Food was bland but otherwise ok. Service was prompt but a little to hovering. Great ambiance and not overly expensive.
The best thing about the Maverick is the passion people have for the food and service that work there. It was also hands down the best meal my husband and I had while visiting. The soup, cheese plate and sides were particular stand outs.
The food on the Riverwalk is terrible, do yourself a favor and walk a few blocks.
Our server, Wayne gave us excellent service in a friendly not too in our space but just enough to make sure he could give us anything we needed in a timely manner.
The only issue I was was with my drink that was supposed to have rosemary in it but didn’t. When I asked about it, I was invited to order another one so they could get it right. I would prefer they’d made that one right.
The ambiance is hip and trendy, nice lighting with natural light and large windows. The service was great; waitress was very attentive. The mimosas were nothing special, they tasted like every other one on every menu. There was no option to get a pitcher vs just one at a time. The brioche donut was the best I have ever had in my life! The eggs in the cassoulet were cooked perfectly! However, the dish was a bit heavy with the duck confit, beans and sausage and needed something brighter and less greasy. I would not order this dish again. The donut amazing and the other beverage made with campari, vermuth was delightful!
It was a great experience with very good food and great service.
It was great ; waiter was excellent ; food was one of the best I have had out
The front has nice seating and ambience. Great food and service. The seating in the back (near the restrooms ) is less desirable and much more noisy. I would definitely recommend making a reservation
Outstanding food with unique preparations and unusual favor combinations, attentive and knowledgeable service staff, great atmosphere. The crab cake on the slider was amazing - the best I have had in a really long time.
This is our new favorite neighborhood restaurant! We are so grateful for the recommendation and glad we decided to celebrate our 10 Year wedding anniversary here. Everything we had to eat and drink was fantastic and the service here is impeccable. We can’t wait to drop in again soon!
Been there three times and the food is exceptional quality and taste. The service and ambiance is warm, inviting and makes the evening special
We're from out of state and we went as a birthday celebration for my wife. We were coming from a day trip out of town and needed to adjust the reservation, and came in dressed quite casually. The host was very accommodating, reassured us that we were dressed just fine and we ended up sitting at the bar - our preference. The bartender was reasonably busy for a Sunday night with drink orders but gave us plenty of time to go through menu and identified some strong options. Cocktails were tasty and genuinely interesting. We went with the appetizer of Calamari & Octopus grilled with calabrese pepper, potatoes - very colorfully plated and a nicely interesting spice. Great start. For entrees my wife went with the Crispy Duck and loved it (it WAS really tasty from the bite I had) and I did the Mixed Grill - Texas quail, sausage, pork belly, tenderloin. Great portion size and much more interesting than just a bunch of meat on a plate. On a recommendation I ordered the Chimmichurri sauce, which went really well with the sausage and tenderloin. For desert we shared a Peach Upside Down Cake with cinnamon-corn ice cream & caramel, which was delicious. Servers weren't intrusive but when their tables were slow they were very generous with tips and suggestions about how to spend our remaining day in town. No special birthday treat or anything but the whole evening was a treat and the best meal of a long weekend with some stiff competition. I'm expecting we''ll be back next year!
We ordered the mussels and they were not cooked correctly. We had to send them back. We also ordered the red snapper and it was very fishy. It seemed old and we were unable to eat it. We did not send it back because we were unhappy with most of what we ordered and decided to just make the beat of things.
Our group of six enjoyed a delicious meal in a beautiful setting. We could hear each other in conversation - especially important for one person with hearing impairment. Staff was friendly and helpful. Food full of flavors. Surprised by the perfect texture of the gnocci and the complex flavors of the after dinner sorbet. Some dishes have strong smoke flavor so ask for suggestions if that's not your thing. Atmosphere is perfect for date night or a group of friends, multiple seating options.
Great place, lovely food
I'd heard a lot about Maverick and was really looking forward to it. Excellent concept, spotty execution. I really liked the menu, with very appealing choices, not too many of them (which I like), vegetable sides to share, good quality entrees. A signature cocktail was delicious and memorable. The service was discreet and skillful. But we had to send two things back, and the table next to us had to send back an undercooked entree as well. For us, it was a salad with brown old lettuce in it, and a steelhead trout entree that was not cooked as requested (way underdone). The ambience is beautiful and mellow, very inviting, but some of the music was jarring and aggressive and seemed out of place. Servers didn't know how to pronounce "radicchio." So it seemed that the staff needed some more training.
Great service and amazing food
Great NYE dinner with attentive & friendly service!!
NYE date night / celebrating our wedding and baby girl. It’s an outstanding venue in San Antonio. Definitely one of my top 5 places there.
had the steak--very bland-soup was good- pork was ok
We had dinner here for New Years Eve and it was truly disappointing. The ambiance was super lame - it’s NYE, get a live jazz trio or something. The food was boring, especially considering they charged a pre-fixed menu price of $75 per person. I’m not typically a fan of this restaurant, but my boyfriend picked it so I gave it another shot and I definitely won’t make that mistake again.
Great New Years dinner special. The pre-select menu with wine pairing had a diverse selection, all of which was very tasty. Some options were packed with flavor like the potato leek soup with truffle while others were more subtle but still very good, like the hamachi Sashimi. Impressed with their ability to cook a range of dishes in a variety of styles. Cocktails are also very good. It was pricey but well worth it. Service was also on point even tho it was busy night.
My wife and I ate at the Maverick to celebrate our anniversary and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had mentioned that it was our anniversary when I made the reservation and they treated us to complimentary champagne and a greeting card signed by all the staff. I had the prix fixe Coq a Vin and my wife had the salmon, and both were excellent. Service was very attentive and the ambience was relaxing. We will be back.
Nice birthday dinner with a birthday card signed by staff waiting on our table. Great service and food.
Amazing food and service as always. My friend had a LOT of food allergies and they were very accommodating for his needs!
I've been wanting to try Maverick out forever, and I'm kicking myself for waiting so long! So good!
