About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Great for fine wines
  • Romantic
Mushrooms are the heart of what we do at the Joel Palmer House. We have always endeavored to obtain seasonal and local ingredients and we use many locally produced greens, herbs, and vegetables, some of which come from our own culinary garden. We are frequently inspired by ingredients found in the cuisines of France, China, Thailand, Poland and India, so we call our cooking "freestyle." Our dishes pair well the celebrated wines of Oregon, especially Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. Our extensive, Oregon-focused wine list has been awarded the Best of Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator. Of special note, The Joel Palmer House ranks as one of Oregon's finest historic homes and is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Oregon Historic Register. Built in 1857, the house is Dayton's oldest standing structure. When weather permits, guests can enjoy their dinner on our outdoor patio, soaking in the last rays of sunshine in the heart of Oregon Wine Country.

This was very disappointing. We expected a celebration of Oregon’s great wild mushrooms prepared with exceptional culinary skill to justify the high price. Instead we were served four courses that an amateur home cook could have prepared, mostly featuring ground or minced mushrooms. We did not enjoy any of the food. Suggest a complete revamping of the culinary staff.

We enjoyed the Omakase tasting menu with Kilo as our host and somm. It was incredible! Each course is inherently small, but the courses really add up and overall it was a lot more food than we expected, so we had to pace ourselves towards the end to save room for the cheese cart (so fun!) and the unique dessert experience. Highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the area.

The Joel Palmer is a dining experience equivalent to any Michelin starred restaurant. The sommeliers, Levi and Kilo, made excellent dining & wine recommendations. Our server Annie was also excellent and clearly enjoyed working at the restaurant. We ordered the Omakase experience and were delighted! The highlight was the mushroom trio of family recipes. I would recommend this establishment to anyone interested in fine dining in Oregon.

The evening started with a wonderful welcome. We immediately felt that the staff was glad to see us would be super attentive to our needs. Food was fabulous. A special shoutout to Josh Kilohaha………. We had a food allergy and when each course came out he personally inspected to assure that the order was correct including one course he returned to make a change without being asked. Overall our wedding anniversary was an event we will remember forever. Thanks to all the staff for your truly magnificent attention to our special day.

We have been to the Joel Palmer house a few times already so we were very disappointed with how it turned out this time. We went with the basic prix fixe menu as we normally do. This time the main course was sturgeon. One of us at the table doesn't like sturgeon and asked if there was a substitute. The first option was duck breast, which we passed on. Then mussels, another pass. Then a spicy poke bowl, another pass. It was disappointing that there wasn't a "plain" option. I know that this is an upscale restaurant and they like to provide high quality interesting food. But not having a "plain" option is a bit limiting in some cases. The bread they served was a focaccia that was really tasty but only if you liked spicy food. It had cayenne pepper mixed in. We asked about a non-spicy bread and they had something that sounded really good and we asked for that but it never made it out to our table. At the beginning of the meal they asked for our drink selections. We don't drink but we always are interested in upscale mocktails. We mentioned this to our server and they said they'd mention it to the bartender and let us know what options there were. It seems that we were forgotten. It was just before the next to last course that our server asked us if we were still interested in a mocktail. Considering how late it was in the dinner, we declined. So overall, the food was disappointing and the service was not up to the standard that had been set in previous visits. Since we've always had an excellent time before, we will probably give them another try at some point, but we will be going in with lower expectations.
