About this restaurant

Having been situated here on Lant Street since the nineteenth century (with a rebuild in the ’20s), "The Glad" is named after four-time former prime minister William Gladstone and even gets a mention in ‘The Pickwick Papers’ as Charles Dickens once lived on the same road.

The intimate family-run pub, located just a stone's throw away from Borough tube station is a dominant live music spot and the best of it's kind near London Bridge! You can expect gigs every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from genres of folk, blues, pop to electronica. The pub boasts an intimate beer garden/roof terrace and an upstairs lounge area that can be used for private hire!

I liked the pub which is a little quirky but, on a cold winter's day, really not very cosy and some of our party were putting their coats back on after a bit. The Sunday lunch menu consists of one meat option and one vegetarian alternative - essential the same dish but swooping the meat for a paneer pie. The style of cooking is an Indian take on English food; the chicken breast was tasty (so I'm told) and the paneer pie was also good but the accompanying vegetables of spicy roast potatoes, seasonal greens and yorkshire pudding were cold for all of us. This lack of care is a shame especially as the menu is very limited and pub was almost empty when we arrived at 1:30pm and didn't really fill up until after our food was served. We tried a couple of different types of beer but there seemed to be a problem with the taps as the beer was way too frothy for both. But it is a nice pub and if I am in the neighbourhood, on a warm day, I will return but not for the food.
