The Gay Hussar can be said, without a shadow of a doubt, to be one of London’s most famous restaurants. A long time haunt of top politicos and media types – well, it is in the centre of swinging Soho after all – this fine restaurant has been flying the Hungarian flag over the English capital for more than fifty years now. Cosy and comfortable but certainly not without elegance, The Gay Hussar’s dining room is anything but generic with higgledy piggledy rows of books lining the room and endless caricatures of notorious public figures fuelling thousands of conversations. An interesting range of authentic Hungarian dishes and matching Hungarian wines complete this unusual experience.

Staff wonderfully professional and attentive. Restaurant is small enough to be cosy but not claustrophobic. Decoration of charicatures is stimulating.

I'd long intended to visit this famous eatery, and I was not disappointed. We met for lunch, pre-theatre and the service was excellent. It has a lively atmosphere and the walls are covered with cartoons of politicians and media people who have dined there. The Hungarian menu was extensive and the food brought quickly. Other diners were also very friendly.

Another fab meal at The Gay Hussar. Only downside was we were a group of 7 and were seated upstairs instead of in the main dining area downstairs. There was no one else eating up there. The food and service was however fantastic. We had a variety of dishes and everyone was happy with their sections. I had the fish terrine and the venison stew which were delicious. We will return but next time I will want ot make sure we are seated downstairs .

What a find. The genuine article, with authentic Hungarian dishes with all the flavours you would want to find. The Brassoi Ermek is to die for!! Fantastic service. Quick throughput. ideal for that pre-theatre dinner. Don't forget to round it off with the unique taste of Tokay wine with your dessert. Definitely one to remember and put in the faves list.
