Regulars for Sunday brunch here - reliably good food and service
Food and service were wonderful!! Overall it was too noisy to have a conversation and therefore challenging to enjoy dinner.
I reserved a table a few days ahead of time, even though it wasn't really necessary. But they still ended up sticking us way in the back right in front of the noisy kitchen. Our server walked us past plenty of open tables that would have served is much better.
The waitress felt scripted when we would ask about a particular menu item. I was also annoyed with her doing things like reaching over our appetizer that we were trying to enjoy to remove wine glasses on the table that weren't bothering us at all. I much prefer empty wine glasses sitting towards the back of the booth-table to your arms reaching over my food.
The food quality was okay. We normally go to Seven Lions on our yearly trip to Chicago's Symphony Center, but found it to be closed. The Food at The Gage doesn't even come close to the Lion's. The Scallops at Gage were undercooked, just slightly, but when you're paying $35 for a few scallops, you expect them to be perfect.
The venison burger was a good burger, but did not have that traditional venison taste to it. It tasted like they may be cutting it with either beef fat or meat.
The drinks were subpar. The Old Fashioned tasted muddied with too many bitters. When the waitress asked if I wanted another one, I told her I didn't like it and then she walked away without saying anything. I would have ordered a different drink had she stayed and had not removed the drink menu when we ordered our meal.
On the plus side, the food came quickly and the restaurant looked nice, except for the area right next to the kitchen where I got stuck.
On my next trip to Michigan Avenue, I'll be looking for other options to dine.
Wonderful experience! We went for a fun date night and were not disappointed.
At a conference in the city with business partners, we had a great lunch, enjoyed a cocktail together and had excellent service. Thank you The Gage!
We dined at the Gage on a trip to Chicago to see "Hamilton". We dined outside, and were very pleased with the service, food, and ambiance.
We loved the Gage! Monica was excellent. The food was fantastic. The only complaint was clearing the table before the last person finished. After apps and after main course. It’s a small complaint because we really enjoyed our experience!
Great food, very convenient for pre-theatre. Noisy inside, much nicer outside.
The staff of The Gage is exemplary. The food is always creative, great wine & cocktail list. And you can't beat the view from the table in the front window. My business guests from out of town loved it and we appreciated the extra care for one of our diners who needed special assistance.
Loved the historic building & the server & staff were very friendly & attentive. Food was prompt & delicious!
if you are around Millenial Park it is the perfect place to get authentic american atmosphere and excellent food
I dine at The Gage frequently....never disappointed.
We had a great meal and great service. Love the Gage!
Lunch last Sunday before going to a play. New server and she did extremely well. Food and service always great.
Awesome brunch as always! I never miss Sunday Brunch here when in Chicago
The Gage is a great staple in Chicago. Always good food and good service. I wish there were a few more healthy breakfast options to choose from but the quality and the value is always top notch.
We were in the quieter back. Quiet enough there for romantic talk. Food was excellent.
Wonderful food in a beautiful atmosphere! The only downside is that the tables are very close together so there’s not much privacy.
We were in the city for Hamilton, and attended the Gage as a recommendation from a friend. We enjoyed our evening, noise level was quite loud, not conducive to cross talk at the table. Our server was pleasant, however, when it came time for the checks to be paid, she had to go back at least 3 times to correct all the errors on them. That was a concern for us. Finally, two of our party were sick after eating there with GI related issues, which perhaps is related to the poutine, since those two ate that while everyone else did not. I'd be willing to give them another chance, but would be interested to know if any other diners reported illness after eating there on Saturday night, Sept. 7, 2019 ...
Everything a restaurant should be: food that's inventive, attractive, and tasty; excellent service with attention to detail; surroundings that are pleasant.
Food was top-notch and service was prompt and friendly
I liked the space and the menu had a nice balance of options. It was a bit upscale for a casual lunch, but good for a business lunch or special occasion. The service was excellent.
You'll be hard pressed to find a better restuarant in Chicago. The quality and creativity of the food is exceptional. The atmosphere and energy, in addition, to the quality of the staff are awesome. The overall attention to detail and precision in their execution is remarkable. The gold standard of flavors, atmosphere and service.
Yes, I would recommend to a friend. This was my first time at The Gage. The food and service were wonderful. I was disappointed with the table, as it was in a line of tables and I had requested seating in a quieter area of the restaurant in my Open Table reservations. I am in Milwaukee and was meeting a friend from D.C. for lunch, so just wanted to be able to talk...we did manage, but could have been better. Can't say enough about the great wait staff!
Nice dinner pre-Bears game. In town for weekend celebrating wedding anniversary. Server Natalie brought lovely cookies complimentary for dessert.
Best place on Michigan Avenue. Love The Gage. Highly recommend.
A favorite spot to dine prior to Bears games. Food is consistently good.
Great place. Cool atmosphere. Great food. Very professional bar service and drinks.
The Gage is great! Will definitely come back again!
Always great service and food. We lingered at the table a bit after we finished eating. We weren't rushed to leave which I really appreciated since we hadn't seen our friends for quite sometime.
We were celebrating my mother-in-law's 80th birthday and our server recognized it with a special dessert after we finished eating our brunch. This nice touch added to the special day we had planned for her.
Service was excellent (we were seated about 20 min before our reservation) and the food was very good
Best mussels ever!
What happened to our beloved The Gage?! We've been going to The Gage for at least 4 years for special occasions, primarily. Last Saturday night we had a poor experience. The poutine was ill-conceived made with pulled chicken instead of pork. The watermelon/tomato salad was poorly ratioed, and the accompanying hanger steak was ordered medium but arrived rare. The scallop dish was odd. The second glass of wine didn't arrive until dessert (and at least they comped us). The waitress told us they didn't have chocolate gelato, but chocolate ice cream (which wasn't on the menu), but it definitely was gelato, and not good - too eggy and too salty. We all tried it and sent it back. I won't be going back for a while and will see if the menu changes before I give them another try.
Love, love, love this restaurant! We started with festive drinks and appetizers. Try a speciality cocktail and you won't be disappointed. The curry and coconut milk concoction we split for dinner (with shrimp added) was incredible and left me feeling sad the next day because I didn't leave any for leftovers.
We. Had a great time with great food. Little more variety for allergy guests would help.
Nice location but I was a little underwhelmed. Food is good but I wouldn't say it's a must when visiting the city.
Always a great experience! And our waiter, Paul, was above-and-beyond fantastic.
Overall, we enjoyed a lovely dinner on the patio and our server was attentive and very pleasant. Would have rated it higher but the menu is somewhat limited, which was a bit disappointing
The hospitality was an amazing experience especially for my birthday with my daughter.
