The Gables is a unique setting and the building itself has so much character. I want to walk away feeling excited to go back, but it falls short in some way. The interior setting does not match up to the exterior. I hate to use the phrase 'a bit dumpy', but that's how it feels. The food was good, but nothing extraordinary, and the service was slow. It was just okay, and given that I no longer live in the immediate area, I doubt I will ever go back.
The food was just okay. I ordered the fried green tomato BLG, and was expecting the nice tang of the green tomato, and the tomatoes were actually red, ripe ones. The windowsill behind me had dead bugs, and my husband was given a soiled, stained napkin as a "fresh" one. We probably won't be back. The server was very nice.
Nothing like the web page in appearance or menus
It has been about a year since we dined there and it just wasn’t as good. Drinks were small and not great. Food was just okay. Ans they were out of menu items on a Saturday night.
Food and service were very good. My wife can’t eat red and green peppers and that was the only crab cake (her favorite) they have. So she ordered scallops and they didn’t have them; even though they were on the menu. Finally ordered salmon and it was fine.
Meal and service was excellent. Beautiful place to have lunch/dinner or a special occasion. Beautifully decorated.
Was a bit disappointed in the outside patio. They could of put some nice flowers around, maybe a bug candle on the table as there were a lot of flies and bugs while we were eating. Some decorations and plants could of given it more ambiance. Also the table was not clean as it had spots on it. The service was extremely slow. There was a couple that were seated next to us that left as they were sitting at the table for a very long time and did not have any one come to take their drink or meal order. We also waited a very long time for our meal. They had a wedding going on and I think they were overwhelmed. The food was good. I had pork chops that were very tasty along with the brussels sprouts. The mushroom soup was very different, it was not creamy but it was very tasty with croutons, delicious chester county mushrooms and cheese on top. The food was good, but I would consider going again nd sitting inside, although in the nice weather I do enjoy sitting outside, but like I said the ambiance was not there.
Server was inattentive. Pasta and bacon undercooked. Shrimp were not grilled. No lump crabmeat in crab cake, just shreds and all breading. They remade our lunch. Took another forty minutes. For the expense it was not worth it. Martinis very small. Manager comped our meal. I left hungry. She was pleasant. Sad as we heard very good things for many years.
Good food and good service.
We will go there again.
Found the food to be poor. Shrimp and grits dish was poorly seasoned and the shrimp were too large and had the tails on. Dish was too heavy on grits and they were also poorly seasoned and gritty rather than smooth. Ambience and service were good.
This was our third visit to Gables and second time celebrating our anniversary. As before the food was delicious. However the ambiance and service were not of the level we had come to expect. The greeting station was empty with a handwritten note to see the bartender for seating. We went to the bartender and they had no idea there was no one at the door. We were seated and were waited on fairly quickly. However, our waiter’s attention quickly proved to be focused somewhere else as throughout the meal he spent an inordinate amount of time with one particular table. When he did return to us it felt like an afterthought. This coupled with our special occasion going unnoticed (it was noted in the reservation and had been acknowledged during previous visits) left us disappointed with the experience.
We sat in the bar area because we went on a Friday night and we like that type of vibe! Gorgeous ambiance in the
bar area. Very rustic chic. Drinks were great! Food was 50/50. My husband loved his cheeseburger and I did NOT
love my margarita pizza flatbread. It had no flavor; had to hunt for the few shrivels of basil, menu said heirloom tomatoes and in actuality it came with cherry tomatoes sliced in half that fell off each time I picked it up. When our waitress asked if I was happy I told her this was not what was described on the menu and she told me she was sorry I did not like my meal and gave us the check.
The food was a big disappointment for the price point. In particular the chicken under a brick was bland and flavorless.
Mushroom soup- was not listed as an onion soup. Zero taste.
My wife’s omelet was like rubber.
1 beer on tap.
Will never return.
When we arrived, it was extremely noisy - made it difficult to have a conversation. Additionally we waiting about 15 minutes before a server arrived. She did apologize and said you were very busy (as we could see). She did bring our drinks right away, but we then waited another 20 minutes for our appetizers. When our main plates arrived, my omelet was over cooked and another person's waffle was so dried out, I'm disappointed that the server would even deliver it. This was my second time at your restaurant, but after this experience, can't say I'll return. As two of us drove from DC and the other person from NJ, it was intended to be a good midway connection point, but not so now. Thanks
The food was outstanding and reasonably price. We had a wonderful waiter who was very attentive.
The biggest problem for us was the noise level. There was a large table of women, who may have been celebrating something. However, it is one thing to be excited, but this was a little over the top. It would have been better, if they took into consideration, the other diners. It's a shame, because everything else was wonderful. I realize there isn't too much the restaurant can do, but maybe the acoustics could be better. All in all, the ambience, the food, the prices, our server were wonderful. I would recommend Gables. Just check to see if there is a large party at your time.
I ordered pancakes and it took them 30-45 mins to make. Two pancakes… they weren’t even that good.
Food was a bit slow, but the setting was adorable and the people were so lovely and accommodating. Beautiful space!
The service had little to desire. Food and drinks came out too slow.
The service was terrible. We waited for 10 min. before I had to callout to a waiter that we needed a drink and were waiting. Then we waited more than 10 minutes and the drink never came. In fact, it seems that that waiter disappeared. There were a lot of people walking around doing nothing. One of the waiters kept yelling, "I am running around in circles". He really wasn't doing anything. There did not seem to be a manager who was running the place or pitching in to help the staff. Everyone was doing their own thing.
This was a special night for us since it was our 43rd anniversary. We will not go back to this place again.
Shrimp and grits and kennett square chicken was excellent. Only negative was $17 for a hamburger was a bit pricey.
My mom was in town visiting and this was only our 2nd time here. Everything was excellent. The apps were perfect portion. Highly recommend the Calamari. For dinner we all ordered something different. The filet was perfectly cooked, massive portion for the crab cakes, and the short ribs fell off the bone perfectly. Always have a good cocktail to pair with each dish snd dessert is a must!
I have dined here several times and last night was very disappointing. Crab cakes were mostly bread filler. The lobster ravioli sauce was very bland. Service was slow.
Our family was very disappointed in our meal. The restaurant had no IPA's to offer. The two flatbreads we got were more like bad pizza. The shrimp cocktail was not good. The crabcakes and the special bronzino were disappointing as well. The service was also very slow, and they couldn't process my Open Table gift card.
This restaurant has a lot of potential, but the food needs to be improved, along with the service.
Phil was our server. He was working so hard to cover the outside area and was apologetic that it was taking longer than usual to get our food. It was a beautiful night and we sat outdoors so it was fine . He was a great waiter and his recommendations were right on . Everything was delicious — great cocktails, fried calamari and two of us had the evening specials—Bronzino, salmon and gnocchi. Both were delicious. Another one had the pork chop —very tender and good.
Left after 5 minutes because the wedding upstairs was very very loud throughout the restaurant.
Great service and fantastic food. Atmosphere very comfortable.
The first time I have been there where no one was at the desk for seating. We waited 10 minutes to be seated when tables were readily available.
Temp too cold
Some items not available
Noise level TOO HIGH
Pleasant staff. Excellent food
We were seated immediately… great.
Trace our server was outstanding.. so personable and professional. We had calamari, chicken Caesar salad, a crab cake sandwich on a lucious brioche roll, creme brûlée for dessert and a few espresso’s… all were wonderful
We’ll be visiting again soon.
Great food great decor food was great. Will be back
We had an excellent meal here. I wish we could have sat in the outside area which is beautiful, but the rainy weather prevented that. The food and service were great. We will be back!
Our first time going to The Gables - everything was EXCELLENT. Warm greeting from hostess, very attentive wait staff, and delicious food. We will definitely be returning. An excellent experience from beginning to end.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Our waiter was excellent and answered all our questions. The ambiance was very comfortable. Rain kept us from enjoying the outdoor seating which looks fabulous. We will be coming back in nice weather.
Leisurely lunch. The best thing here is the food! But drinks and service are excellent too. Pricey, but worth it.
Just so so
Had 8:30 reservation but was not informed restaurant closes at 9. Staff were lovely and consoling through it all
Was super excited to try this place, but was disappointed. Our server took our drink order right away… then took a while for the drinks and the place seemed empty. Can’t imagine the wait during a busy time. We heard the waitress at the next table discussing the specials - half of which our waitress did not mention to us. We were offered bread for the table after we were finished with our appetizers - bread never came. We had the filet and NY strip which were both really good, however, the portion sizes are very small for the price. We each got a tiny spoonful of mashed potatoes and about 10 half green beans.
Love love love. I highly recommend this place. Decided to go on a whim, first time here and had no idea what to expect. Other than the most adorable outdoor area the atmosphere was fabulous. We practically felt hidden away from the world and couldn’t be happier. The food was spectacular from the cheese board to the fried tomatoes with burrata (must try) to the filet. Drinks were great and the wine bottle selection is just right and doesn’t break the bank.
Highly recommend it. Service was fantastic and we felt like we were welcomed and appreciated. Food was truly amazing and the quality from the ingredients being locally sourced really shone through. I will be back and I can’t wait.
