Uh oh - I love this place but wonder if it was a bad night or the new normal. My soup and dinner were both off - some questionably raw lobster in the bisque and bone dry (almost crunchy) sauceless pasta with four dry sausage pieces. We drive an hour to go there, so probably have higher expectations, but one of the most disappointing food I’ve had out I’ve had in a long time. Ambiance and bar always stellar.
Scallops weee amazing the service was impeccable would definitely return cozy outside firepit
Food was mediocre.
The experience at The Gables was.. subpar. I heard GREAT things about this place, but was let down. First, I’d like to say that the decor was beautiful. Exposed brick and hardwood floors are my weakness, so I was in love with the interior/exterior of the building. The galvanized metal chairs were a great touch to the rustic feel of the establishment.
The food, however, did not live up to the hype. I ordered the duck sandwich, and it was very chewy. It felt like I was eating a fat sandwich. And the bacon on the sandwich overwhelmed the duck, making it taste like a bacon and toast sandwich.
Lovely, quaint restaurant with wonderful service and excellent food.
Had a great Valentines dinner! It was our first time here and we will certainly be coming back. Our waiter Mike was fantastic!
The last time we dined at The Gables was poor. Months later we decided to give it another chance, foolishly. When we arrived at 7:30 pm, we were told there would be at least a 35 minute wait, even though we had a reservation. The three of us finally accepted a very small table in the noisy bar area instead of the dining room. We waited another 30 minutes and our only acknowledgement was from a busboy! We inquired about who would service our table and after waiting another 15 minutes a server stopped by. She explained that she was really the pastry chef and that their computer system was down. We didn't understand why she offered these statements as an excuse for ignoring us. It was 8:45 pm at this point and all we had so far was water and three small, cold, hard rolls. We should have left but on Valentine's Day, we would have had a difficult time getting seated elsewhere. The food was terrible. Our soup arrived cold. I had to send the lobster bisque back because it tasted spoiled. The crab dip had absolutely no crab and was thin and watery. The entrees were very small and mediocre. The Filet Mignon actually tasted strange. It had no sauce and wasn't as described on the menu at all. What a bad experience! We wasted at least $150 that was supposed to be a special occasion dinner. It was ruined. We feel robbed!
We went for Valentine’s Day and it was so cute! They seated us in the ballroom upstairs which was decorated so pretty and the service was great! We got the surf and turf, omg the steak was amazing!
I was disappointed with my meal. My wife enjoyed the scallops, but was unhappy with the mushroom appetizer and toffee dessert. The puff pastry in the appetizer was chewy and tough. My entree the shrimp and grits was half warm and half tepid. The dessert cake had the texture of whole grain muffin. Very disappointing.
One of my favorite places to dine! Food, ambiance, and service are great!!
Best seared scallops I've had in years. Nice wine list. Tasty lime pie.
Food and atmosphere were excellent. The Sunday Brunch is a great value. We really enjoyed ourselves!
It was my wife's birthday, the waitress and hostess were great, the food was excellent, the ambiance was good. Now the problem, there were kids that were running around in the bar area, shouting, giggling , etc. It was like a playground, maybe they are the owners kids? Seemed very odd. The bar area can be seen and heard from the dining area, very distracting when you are paying high prices for your dinner. Also a lady was in the bar area with a dog (odd), hugging it and walking around with it. She even took it into the kitchen!!!!! Once again very odd. I have been to many fine dining restaurants in the past, but have never come across this before. Just think about it, chatting with your wife on her birthday and hearing kids running around and dogs in the kitchen???????? But the food was great. ODD
Food was fantastic with great service. Very close to Brandywine museum
Terrible food, and mediocre service. Left after appetizers to find a new place. Ordered 2 glasses of wine, and served completely flat sparking wine from an old bottle. Appetizers came, so excited about tortellini in brodo, which is all about the brodo - the broth. The most tasteless broth I have ever encountered, like water with food coloring.
We love the Gables. Our waiter and waitress on Thursday nights are so helpful and kind. We love the food. And we are always proud to take friends there. Just a beautiful experience all around.
Lovely venue, beautifully appointed, with a very professional staff—friendly, informative, attentive but not overly so. The food was wonderful, except that the desserts were focused more on presentation and sugar content than on flavor and complementing the other food. We stayed for a long while but were not encouraged to go. What a great site, great food! I hate to admit, but I live in the area and had never been there before. I won’t make that mistake again.
I want to write a glowing review of this place because it's where I got married 2 years ago! They had an off night, I guess. There was confusion over who our server was going to be. The busboys were not well trained, one tried to grab away a dish that we had just had delivered to our table! There were two busboys roaming the dining room and they were both awkward and intrusive. My food was greasy (Frenched Chicken and Potato Croquettes); the beet greens were gritty, like they weren't rinsed well; the salad didn't seem to have dressing on it. On the plus side, we had an amazing bottle of Viognier!! Disappointing meal overall though.
This is the 3rd time within the past year we have eaten here. Each time we have had the exact same experience. The food was Outstanding, but unfortunately the service was sub par. Even with an early reservation (6:45), the food delivery was painfully slow. The order process was also disappointing. One of our party has a gluten allergy and NO individual assistance was provided. When asked, the server seemed annoyed to have to check with chef. He disappeared for long stretches of time and did not return to offer drinks. Once ordered, they took Forever to arrive as well. It is really unfortunate as the food was Outstanding! At the price point of this restaurant the service should at least be attentive and friendly. Both of which it lacked in entirety.
Great atmosphere, the service was excellent and the food was delicious!
We love the cozy atmosphere...fireplace...paintings in the beautiful Chadds Ford farm setting!
Ok food, decent service, the brunch buffet is nothing special.
Outstanding server who suggested, made simple, and anticipated our needs. Awesome!!
Our first visit to The Gables....it was good. Bar was fantastic and they have some really unique drink options. Our dinner was good (both had the filet) - mine tasted burnt even though it wasn't - just the sear on the outside. We felt a bit rushed by the waitstaff though. Our reservation was at 8pm so there shouldn't have been a push to get us seated, fed and out the door.
Good restaurant - great ambiance.
We made reservations here for New Years Eve...we had not been since the new owners. What a great evening! Our waiter, Michael, was outstanding! Allowed us the time we wanted and never made us feel rushed. He could not have been better for us! The food was very yummy, especially since it was New Years Eve! Fabulous, and big salad... crab cakes were wonderful. All our food arrived hot. The prices here are very reasonable for an upscale restaurant. We will definitely be coming here more often!
This is a lovely restaurant and the dining experience is quite good. My two constructive criticism are that the dining chairs are extremely uncomfortable and contrast (in a bad way) with the country inn vibe. Additionally, while the food is generally delicious and presented nicely-- the mushroom soup is outstanding and uniquely prepared-- it is overpriced to a degree that keeps me from frequenting the restaurant more than once or twice a year.
This was our first time for dinner. We were eating early and then going to Longwood Gardens. We decided to try the jumbo lump crab cake. We were very disappointed that there was very little jumbo lump crab meat in it and it was mostly filler which wasn’t seasoned all that well. It was $23 for one crabcake with quinoa. Very pricey but I was willing to pay for an exceptional crabcake. This was mediocre at best. I generally like going there for lunch and the mushroom soup is very good.
It was our first time having brunch at the Gables and it was a great experience. Excellent food and excellent service. We throughly enjoyed our eggs benedict. Thanks to our server Gretchen!
GREAT FOOD AND THE SERVICE WAS ABOVE EXCELENCE !!!!! THANKS
Had terrific service and delicious food. Can’t go wrong with this place.
It took our waiter almost 10 minutes to stop at our table and I acthad to flag him down to get him to stop. He didn't introduce himself or give is the specials. However about 30 minutes later he introduced himself and read the specials to the table behind us. Never asked how our meal was or if we need another. Also we both ordered the mushroom soup which was good but not warm at all.
Possibly because the restaurant was understaffed, service was slow but at times also inconsiderate, with consumed dishes left on the table after multiple trips back. Much of the food was also served under proper temperature, lukewarm or room temperature...
Excellent experience. Food, service and atmosphere were great!
Had a great Christmas Eve dinner with family. Waiter was fun and efficient.
The dining experience was very nice, the wait staff was very friendly and knowledgeable.
We had a wonderful experience at Gables this Christmas Eve! The food was excellent and the service exceptional! Thank you, Philip for a delightful evening.
We have frequented the Gables for years, with at least 3-5 visits per year. We always take our full family (8-10) to a special dinner around Xmas, something our out of town guest always look forward to. This year we went on a Sunday evening and were completely disappointed. The service was awful...long wait to be seated, poor attention, no follow up by our waiter and a dinner that arrived one hour after we ordered. Not only was it late, it was cold! No excuse for that. The cocktails were brought in “water glasses” not cocktail glasses. Each prepared poorly or straight out wrong. The wine was poured but no one ever checked if we needed more. The quality of the food was poor as well, which we never experienced before. The steak was prepared wrong, the risotto cold, the fish bland and the pasta quite boring. Not sure if it was a bad night or a change in chefs. Either way we will be moving our Xmas family dinner to another restaurant in the future. I accept an off night, but not on all dimensions with no apologies or engagement. Not what we expect from a normally outstanding experience.
Went for an early lunch on a Sunday. While the brunch offerings looked tasty, we went for the ala cartel menu. May wife had the eggs Benedict and said it was one of the best she has ever had. The ham was delicious, the eggs poached to perfection and the sauce creamy. I had the quiche of the day which was braised short ribs and mushrooms, the slice was a good two inches tall and served with a good salad.
