Excellent food, nice to have different choices from the normal pub food, friendly service. Unfortunately it was quite cold on the day even with the heaters, so next visit either in sunshine or indoors.
Lovely staff and delicious food. Only two personal moans- being called ‘guys’. I know it’s the modern way, but it’s a bit American and, as an older woman, I don’t feel like a ‘guy’. The other is music. We sat outside (weather was ok) purely because the lovely old army tent had pounding bass music. Given most of the clientele were of the older kind, this didn’t seem necessary nor appropriate. It certainly didn’t match the upmarket country pub atmosphere I think was being aimed for. We were lucky to be able sit outside and enjoy birdsong and moving water and conversation!
The prevailing circumstances considered, we were delighted to come along and enjoy this new local facility, particularly its very imaginative menu and sensible pricing. All the serving staff we met seemed happy to be there - as were we. I'm sure we all look forward to the easing of restrictions. Thank you.
Really nice evening, albeit in an old army tent. Food was good, Felix the waiter a star and they even produced a plate with chocolate shards wishing us a happy anniversary, couldn’t ask for much more in the last week of semi-lockdown.
6 of us went for Sunday lunch in the tent. The food, atmisphere and service were exellent and the staff couldn't have been friendlier. If we lived here we would never be out of the place!
Helpful friendly service and such delicious food.
Excellent Sunday Roast - really one of the best! Excellent service! Worth driving to!
Delicious Sunday roast beef lunch with extremely generous portions, beautifully cooked followed by mouth-watering desserts, washed down by sparkling local cider. Excellent, welcoming service. Idyllic rural setting under Covid-proof tent outdoors with lowkey music. A perfect birthday treat. We'll be back!
A second excellent night outside in the tent at the Fox. Despite the weather, the young team of staff made the evening with their enthusiasm and service. Particularly enjoyed the trio of starters and the buttermilk pudding with a lovely glass of Kingston black
We had a great evening with delicious food and fab service. Thank you!
Lovely pub situated on a quiet country road with plenty of outdoor seating. The food we had was gorgeous although we only had a starter but the menu looked great. Staff were lovely but they were a bit slow with our drinks.
Lovely place ....
Although the staff forgot one of our mains we we said where is it ? he blamed the chef !
When it did arrive very poor salad
Luckly they took off the Bill but it spoiled the meal
Then he ordered a coffee which didn’t happen either !!
Need to up the service
Would go back as great venue ...hopefully better service.
This is an absolute treasure - a great Chef in the heart of the Dorset country side. The food is exceptional and the service is world class.
Picnic tables in a repurposed military tent could be quite atmospheric, though ours was positioned right beside where the waiting staff stood to chat, so not very intimate. Food was excellent, spelt game “risotto” packed full of flavour, crispy monkfish cheeks very meaty.
Our first night in the covid compliant tent. The staff were great, copy extremely well with both the unusual dining arrangements and the popularity of the new venue. The heaven and Earth starter was outstanding and whilst the battered monk fish cheeks were tasty, they would have been far better with a tempura batter. Both house wines excellent quality and value for money
We had the most incredible evening with outstanding service. Freya and Felix made our anniversary/birthday the most special. We had a great fun and incredible food in the most idyllic place. Thank you
Wonderful food, predicated on the quality of the ingredients rather than clever 'add ons'! Combinations of flavours and textures added to the experience of each item we chose.
Friendly, efficient and knowledgable staff.
Outside dining at its best.
Great food and a welcome reception from the team. Children’s menu particularly good.
Such a happy evening, thank
You all, we were so well looked after.
Enjoyed everything about our meal. Mark Hix even came over to our table to chat which was great! I had the game curry and my wife had the turbot and red mullet both cooked to perfection. For pudding we had Willies Peruvian gold chocolate mousse which was so nice. Service was excellent. Never seen so many waiters. Highly recommended
A lovely evening but not totally up to our expectations, possibly due to outside dining. Very good food and friendly staff, but very dark under the awning and bearing in mind we were on a time schedule quite long waits for drinks etc, which meant we were unable to have coffee at the end of the meal. We will revisit at a later date when normal restaurant service is resumed.
Thoroughly excellent place to eat, beautiful setting, superb service & food. We ate in the tent outside due to Covid restrictions which is brilliantly set up, lovely & cosy. Have rated the food very good, rather than outstanding but it really was excellent, there just wasn't an option for excellent! Will definitely recommend.
We ate in a Korean War vintage tent on the grass opposite the pub. The tent was heated with 3 large gas flame heaters.
The food was excellent and the wine list extensive, also draught beers on tap and a range of cocktails.
Service was a bit patchy, but that may be because they were very busy and fully booked and we were on the table in the farthest corner of the tent.
Everything was Covid secure. Plenty of parking. Not cheap, but highly recommended.
We dined outside in an old tent which was welcome shelter with gas heaters and meant the dining out experience was made possible but the bench seating gets pretty hard after a while. There was also some road noise. The riverside setting is attractive though.
However, full marks to Mark Hix and team for getting this pub restaurant up and running during pandemic restrictions. The staff are young, enthusiastic, well-trained and knowledgeable about the menu and the drinks list.
We chose from a fairly concise a la carte menu but I think most people would find something they would like. Currently there are a number of seasonal asparagus dishes, which certainly suits me, and there are oysters, steak, local sausages and black pudding, to name a few. There is also a small bar menu which includes a chip buttie.
The food was quite simply delicious. The only thing which disappointed, ironically given Hix’s love of fish, was the prawns in a 3 part starter, which lacked flavour but were cheered up by a garlic mayonnaise served with the accompanying very good asparagus.
As at Hix’s Oyster and Fish restaurant, the wine list is a bit eclectic and, to me does not offer a big enough choice of grape variety in the range of wine by the glass, nor a wide enough choice of bottles at the lower price range (c £28). One is pushed into the £40 range and therefore only orders one. However, the Fiano by the glass was pleasant, but to offer only that and Viognier as white wines by the glass in a pub seems a curious decision. For those who want a Sauvignon Blanc or a Chardonnay, you will have to order a bottle. The Sauvignon de Touraine was excellent.
For those who wonder about cost, l would say that £183 for 3 starters, 3 mains, 2 puds, a bottle of wine and 4 drinks of this level of quality was decent value and when it can be enjoyed with slightly more comfortable seating we will certainly go back. The cooking is splendid.
Rather unfair to rate during the current Covid restrictions, but will definitely return. Had a good time but it was a cold day, so not good for outdoor dining.
We learnt from Mark of his new venture so we’re keen to try it out
Nestled in the country lanes ( look out for tractors ) it has easy parking
Because of the current restrictions we enjoyed our lunch in an old authentic army tent which was set up streamside in the pub garden
The team working here are young and enthusiastic with time to talk with the customers and explain the food
The tent is rustic but with good space heaters .These were important as it was a cool day
We did enjoyed the new season asparagus, sausages for him ,fish or me and delicious apple pie to finish
It was good to see Mark there too
We are really looking forward to dining inside the pub itself when allowed
We made our first visit to the
Area and booked for 4 nights at The Fox. What an amazing setting.
Food is outstanding. Service excellent.
We will we coming back regularly
As we have fallen in love with the
Nulli secundus in terms of enforced outside eating!!
Exquisite food served by knowledgable and attentive staff. All in all a memorable occasion.
Food absolutely delicious, staff were fantastic and lovely atmosphere. Had a really fab evening at The Fox.
Food was very good, staff pleasant and attentive. It was good to share a meal with friends in a nice environment. We had lunch on the grass verge opposite the pub, and had no complaints at all.
Service good. Nice wine. Parking good. Menu choices poor. Food expensive for what it was.
I realise that the owner’s reputation is built on fish-based cuisine but the vegetarian menu is disappointing in the extreme. Lovely setting and atmosphere. Service needs to get slicker but still early days.
First Sunday lunch outpost lockdown.... food excellent as we have come to expect, always our first choice and we look forward to a Hix Sunday lunch. Great qualIty ingredients as always for our lunch, excellent roast beef sirloin, cooked beautifully medium rare, massive Yorkshire pudding and all the potatoes and veg excellent.
It was a sunny and warm day for mid Spring hence the place was very busy. As a result service was a little stretched and a little sporadic which did impact our overall experience from outstanding to very good. The team were warm and friendly despite the obvious pressure points however, the main challenge being the initial wait to order our food, after that everything did flow.
It’s the same Hix experience we have always enjoyed in a stunning country pub location. We will be back and look forward to being able to dine in as well as dining al fresco, under canvas.
Went for Sunday lunch and had roast beef and Yorkshire pudding . Cooked to perfection and at a reasonable price too. Everything about this pub and it’s setting in a Dorset village by a bubbling brook made a perfect ambience in the April sunshine. My only reason for giving the staff 4 stars and not 5 was because they seemed overly busy and forgot a couple of our orders for drinks. They were all very friendly though.
Can’t wait to return .
Been before and thought it really good and nice to come back. Good that Mr Hix took time to talk to us, but, 1st pint was very short measure and the ploughmans, very nice as it was, wasn't particularly good value.
The food was good although not startlingly so. Service was slow as two of our starters got muddled in the ordering process. But the staff are new and being trained, and the inn just open again after a long lockdown. The place is lovely and the staff friendly and we had a very pleasant time.
We ate outside by a stream looking at the stunning pub and some horses in a field
Gorgeous setting which on our sunny day was perfect for eating outside
Food was pub type but with a contemporary and some fine dinning twists. All local ingredients with meat fish and vegetarian options for all. Oysters on offer and some scrumptious desserts. A real treat !
Great position in the pretty village, eating in the tent was fun, but we were quite cold by the end of the evening despite the heaters and wearing warm coats. Food was mostly delicious particularly the roast alliums and monkfish cheeks. Although we thought the portion sizes quite meagre for the prices charged. We went on a Friday night and it had a quietly buzzing ambiance. Attentive service. Will definitely go again.
